Pore Gives Timbers Victory 15th Goal Earns 1-0 Win Against Islanders Portland Timbers News Release -- www.portlandtimbers.com Last night's 1-0 win over Puerto Rico was an end of an era at PGE Park, as the stadium will be renovated for MLS next year, and will have a new name. Construction on the stadium will start next week, so Timbers home playoff games will be at Merlo Field at the University of Portland, or at Hillsboro Stadium. Here are some photos, which was a very memorable evening with another sold out crowd of over 15,000. The sunflower theme was the idea of Timber Jim, which goes back to the Timbers Army singing of "You are my sunshine" which is in honor of his daughter who was killed in an auto accident several years ago, the theme was used to honor the team for this event. http://www.soccercityusa.com/timbers/pr090210-pics.htm http://www.soccercityusa.com/timbers/pr090210-morepics.htm http://www.soccercityusa.com/timbers/pr090210.htm
It was an excellent night with an atmosphere I've never before experienced. I was initially worried that Puerto Rico's dirty, chippy attitude was going to ruin our night.
Watched the video of Timber Jim at the last game before the renovation. Amazing. Brilliant for US soccer and MLS. May have to get a Timbers shirt next season
Shirts are available for purchase with the Timbers' MLS logo, quite a limited selection. Kits, however, will not be revealed until December sometime. HA! We American soccer fans are an odd bunch. We mix and use British terms when talking among each other, but personally I must refrain from such talk around 'normal' Americans. The equivalent meaning for kit in American is jersey. [I always thought I spoke English until I lived in Sweden, separate books for Engelska-Svenska and Amerikanska-Svenska]
More often than not i try to use American terminology on here, it's like speaking the local language when you go on holiday (vacation!) i suppose- it's only polite to try. I'm prone to the odd slip up now and again though....."My Engleeeesh eees how you say........bad?"haha
I gotta say, Portland's fans really impress me. They seem so invested in the team and like they genuinely care. To have such a passionate fan base already in place seems like a huge plus with entering MLS. Can't wait to see one of their MLS home games televised nationally.
Sure hope Steve Purdy is part of Portland's plans going into MLS. Guess it's too early to say though hmm.
Actually, isn't a kit the entire uniform (jersey, shorts and socks)? In any case, welcome to MLS! The MLS Heritage Cup battles between the Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders FC, the San Jose Earthquakes and Vancouver Whitecaps FC (and perhaps in a few years, the New York Cosmos as well) will be especially fun. -G
I suppose it depends on who you ask. I still know many who still refer to the combination of the jersey, shorts and socks as a kit. -G
I'm a RBNY STH, but love the Timbers Army. It's impossible for me to not think about them singing "You Are My Sunshine" and why without choking up a little.
Speaking of end of an era at PGE, looks like it's completely official now. The Beavers were purchased yesterday by the San Diego Padres owner Jeff Moorad and he's moving them to Tucson for at least the 2011 season if not permanently pending the approval or denial of a new AAA venue in Escondido, Calfiornia. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp...6001978&vkey=news_sd&c_id=sd&partnerId=rss_sd
