I went to #1 Chicago's 3-0 win at #RV Rochester yesterday. Clouds and sun; 55 degrees and a breeze – turf field. Jr. Midfielder Jenna McKinney is the straw that stirs Chicago’s drink. She is the best player I have seen this year. Overall, not surprisingly, Chicago is a very good team – they play the game well. Some might not call it beautiful, but they do complete passes and make few mental errors and also not very many physical mistakes. McKinney, Sr. Midfielder Mia Calamari, and Sr. target Forward Madori Spiker are all Go-To players for the team. I also need to praise So. center back Mackenzie Peebles for her calm play and excellent footwork. Calamari (2G, 7A) is not a player that aggressively forces the action, or demands the ball, but she anticipates, and makes good decisions and makes the passes to where she wants them to go. She crushed a free kick from 19yards out into the far top 90 for the game’s third goal. For Rochester, I was impressed by So. Forward Jorie Freitag’s hustle and leadership. Two of Rochester’s off-the-bench players I liked were Fy. midfielder Emily Tompkins and Jr. forward Kerri Eden. I also liked Fy. Forward Katie Jasminski for Chicago off-the-bench. I felt that when she came in for Spiker, there were more dimensions to the game up top. Unfortunately Eden was injured (left knee) at about the 69th minute and had to come out. She was on a counter and had hit full speed at the top of the circle; after she received the ball, I think she made a very long touch as she split the pinching center backs about 25 yards from goal. Chicago's backup keeper, Fy. Miranda Malone, who had started the second half, never expected Eden to continue her full speed run after the ball got way from her by so much. She came off her line to collect the ball and the collision at the 18 was bad. Malone also injured her left leg and came out.
I watched WashU vs Emory on Saturday. Both teams are very well coached. While it seemed that Emory created more chances, especially in the first half, Emory left a WashU player unmarked for a short corner kick and the WashU player shot in into the upper far post corner out of the grasp of the Emory GK. This was fairly early in the first half. It was my first time seeing WashU play. Emory and WashU play the beautiful game with passes to feet etc however, I thought WashU had a tendency to play somewhat direct. Both teams appeared to play a 3-5-2 with only three DB's and with the wing defenders man-marking the opposing forwards the entire game. Also, both teams ran "plays" for some of the throw-ins. It was a decent game of chess. The good news for Emory is that this game could have gone either way. Emory had success going down the wings and firing in clever crosses or combination plays. The good news for WashU is that they were able to capitalize on Emory's one major mistake.

Upcoming 10/8 Today 12:30 pm EDT #15 MIT at #4 Williams https://www.nsnsports.net/colleges/williams-college/ Williams usually plays a very pretty game of soccer. I went to Clarkson at #6 William Smith yesterday (WS won 4-0). Similar to the Skidmore game, this was a better team against a lesser team. A lot of the first years who are bench players got playing time for WS. It was balmy high 70’s with a light breeze and it was the welcome back soccer alumnae game. WS first year Julia Keogh (F, Toronto, ON), off the bench, is playing more minutes up top than the player she usually comes in for and she scored the first goal of the game (4G, 3A for the year). I see great things in the future for her college career. Here is today’s shameless plug for William Smith Soccer. Two alumnae who currently work at WS sat in front of us. They were having a blast with two nearby sub-5 year old girls who were there. Sue Willard ’99 (Associate Director of Admissions for Hobart & William Smith) was a 4-year Heron GK and played in the 1997 national championship game; and Tracy Stankavage ‘08 (Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for Hobart & William Smith) was a 3-year Heron defender and 2007 Liberty League Player of the Year. In 2015, Stankavage finished in the top five in the World Strongwoman Championships lightweight division. 4364

I checked some of the conference/league Players of the Week to see which players are being recognized as doing well this year. Here is a list of players who have been POW two times or more this year: Natasha Albaneze (M, Sr, Williams) 2x offense NESCAC Marisa Adelman (F, So, William Patterson) 3x offense NJAC Taylor Cohen (F, So, WashU) 3x offense UAA Emma Greenfield (GK, Fy, WashU) 2x defense UAA Michaela Graddy (F, Sr, Pacific Lutheran) 2x offense Northwest Conference Emily Hurley (GK, Sr, UT Tyler) 2x defense American Southwest Conference Kenne Kessler (F, Jr, Hardin Simmons) 3x offense American Southwest Conference Evie Manning (F, Sr, William Smith) 2x offense Liberty League Marin McCoy (F, Jr, Swarthmore) 3x offense Centennial Conference Libby Munoz (F, So, Kalamazoo) 2x offense Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association 4695
After checking the POW selections, I looked at the NCAA Stats page: http://stats.ncaa.org/rankings?sport_code=WSO&division=3 TCNJ's Goals Against Average caught my eye. I personally do not think it is a Goalkeeping stat. In my mind, it is a Team Defense stat. I was a Lyons fan from play I saw last year. Did you see today's RPI-William Smith game? I thought she did some spectacular things.
Some results from the weekend so far: #1 Chicago (home) over #10 Carnegie Mellon 2-0, with goals in the 10th and 43rd minutes. https://uchicago.prestosports.com/sports/wsoc/2017-18/releases/20171013w798dg I am happy to see that Chicago backup GK Miranda Malone has had playing time in the last two games, after being injured and having to come out of the game at Rochester. #3 TCNJ wins 3-2 in OT on the road vs. Montclair State. http://tcnjathletics.com/news/2017/10/14/womens-soccer-tcnj-wins-13th-straight.aspx TCNJ yields its first two goals of the season in the 47th and 76th minutes. #11 Johns Hopkins (home) over #23 Swarthmore 2-0. http://www.hopkinssports.com/sports/w-soccer/recaps/101417aad.html Swarthmore’s Jr. Marin McCoy (F, Denver, CO), who owns the career scoring record at Swarthmore, was frustrated by Hopkins’ goalkeepers: • In the 15th minute of the first half, Marin McCoy lined up for a penalty kick, but Bess Kitzmiller (Sr, Wilsonville, OR) made an incredible kick save to keep the game scoreless. • In the second half, the Garnet would have another scoring chance as McCoy fired a shot from 15-yards but Kitzmiller made a diving save to keep Hopkins in the lead. • McCoy would have her third excellent scoring opportunity in the 66th minute as she took a shot from 12-yards out that was kicked away by Robyn Lipschultz (So, Wayzata, MN), who had come into the game in relief of Kitzmiller. (Last year’s D3 Player of the Year, GK Lizzy Crist, also hails from Wayzata, MN. Lipschultz is 5’10”; I am going to keep an eye on her.) #5 William Smith (home) over Union 3-0 and over RPI 2-0. WS played the entire first half vs. Union in the attacking half of the field. Union came out pressing WS in the second half , causing WS great difficulty in clearing their own side of the field, giving the second half a very different complexion. On Saturday, RPI came out of the gate attacking, and initially WS had to defend more than it did in many of the previous games. However WS scored first in the 6th minute, which let the wind out of RPI’s sails. WS played out the rest of the half on RPI’s side of the field. The RPI game featured the smoothest, most under control play that I have seen from WS this year. As I noted previously, RPI keeper Joey Lyons (So, Harwood, MD) made some spectacular saves. In the 51st minute, she made a diving save on the ground to block a point blank shot after a nice combination of WS passes, however WS put the rebound away for goal #2. WS did not score again. It was Senior Day at William Smith. After asking the fans to recognize the RPI Seniors, each WS Senior and her parents were introduced, with the announcer giving the player’s Major and where they spent their Semester Abroad: Wales, Italy, Spain, etc. When senior Evie Manning (F, Lytham, England) and her Dad were introduced, the announcer got some laughs when she said that Evie had spent her semester abroad in Geneva, NY. 5007

With the tournament around the corner, I thought I would try to quantify the results of the elite teams in the tournaments since 2010. As a preface, I believe each team must make their own destiny each year and historical rankings have no relation to what will happen this year. However, as a fan, I find historical trends interesting. All teams that have reached the quarter finals at least once (my definition of elite) are included on the list. 1) Synthetic Top 25 List- This method projects tournament results onto a linear Top 25 list. Points are awarded as follows: C=25,F=24,S=22.5,Q=19.5,3=13.5,2=2.8(equally distribute the 45 available ranking points for places 17-25 to the 16 2nd round losers). Note that the last column is the accumulated rankings of the D3soccer year end Top 25 lists for 2010-2016. The value each year in the D3Soccer column is 26 - year-end-ranking. 2010201120122013201420152016TotalD3soccer MessiahF/24C/25C/253/13.5Q/19.5S/22.5F/24153.5161 WilliamsQ/19.5Q/19.52/2.83/13.5F/24C/25Q/19.5123.8112 William SmithS/22.5S/22.52/2.8C/252/2.8Q/19.5Q/19.5114.6140 Washington U.2/2.8Q/19.5Q/19.5Q/19.50F/24C/25110.3116 Johns HopkinsQ/19.53/13.5Q/19.5Q/19.5S/22.503/13.5108113 Wheaton (Ill.)3/13.5F/24S/22.5Q/19.502/2.8082.3106 Hardin-SimmonsC/252/2.83/13.52/2.803/13.5Q/19.577.1104 Trinity (Texas)2/2.83/13.52/2.8F/243/13.52/2.83/13.572.9136 EmoryQ/19.53/13.5F/243/13.500070.578 Misericordia02/2.8S/22.53/13.53/13.53/13.5065.844 Thomas More002/2.83/13.5Q/19.53/13.53/13.562.871 Ithaca2/2.8S/22.53/13.5Q/19.52/2.80061.160 Brandeis2/2.80Q/19.502/2.83/13.5S/22.561.144 TCNJ3/13.52/2.82/2.83/13.5Q/19.52/2.82/2.857.772 Wis-Whitewater03/13.52/2.82/2.80Q/19.53/13.552.138 Centre02/2.82/2.80Q/19.5S/22.52/2.850.454 Lynchburg2/2.803/13.52/2.8C/252/2.82/2.849.786 Carnegie Mellon00Q/19.503/13.53/13.5046.552 Illinois Wesleyan2/2.8002/2.8S/22.53/13.5041.661 Middlebury02/2.82/2.8S/22.5003/13.541.649 Amherst0Q/19.502/2.82/2.82/2.83/13.541.439 Chicago00003/13.52/2.8S/22.538.836 Cortland St.0Q/19.53/13.500003313 Capital02/2.80S/22.52/2.82/2.8030.917 Calvin002/2.82/2.8Q/19.5025.124 OtterbeinS/22.500000022.523 DenisonQ/19.500002/2.8022.316 Pomona-Pitzer000002/2.8Q/19.522.315 Swarthmore00000Q/19.5019.520 2) ATP Ranking Method - This is based on the method the ATP (men's tennis tour) uses to convert tournament results to ranking points. Wow ... LS RPI vs St. Lawerence. Game ended 6-0 and it was 4-0 at half. I dont think RPI showed up for the game defensively. There were a few breakdowns early on defensively. The RPI GK was left on island and couldn't stop the shots. Then I thought the GK was feeling a little shell shocked and couldnt recover. SLU had 7 shots in 1st half and 4 goals. Then the 2nd half RPI was pressing but couldnt get anything. RPI took 21 shots the 2nd half and didnt score. SLU took 5 shots and scored 2 more goals.(against backup GK for RPI) Now LS RIT vs Clarkson. So far mostly RIT but score is 0-0.
just finished LS RIT vs Clarkson. RIT won on a goal with 30 sec to go in regulation. RIT had the better of play but Clarkson hung in there. Neither team looked fast but it looked windy and cold out. RIT won on a through ball to the 18yd. The RIT forward had a step on defenders. GK came up but couldnt hang on to the ball. The GK took out the forward and a defender with her slide for the ball. Which left the it open for the follow up RIT player to put it in the net. It had to be a heart breaking loss for Clarkson.
