If you went to a D3 school, know someone who \did go\is going\will go\ to a D3 school, and/or if you are a D3 fan, please post here about your favorite team or nemesis.

The NSCAA coaches 8/2/2016 Rankings are out.
    http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d3/nscaa-coaches

I plan to use the HeroSports/Bennett Rankings in 2016, because they are more objective than the coaches’ poll.
    http://herosports.com/colleges/sports/d3-womens-soccer

The NWSL is in its Olympic Break, so I took advantage and looked into the upcoming D3 schedules.

Here are TOP 25 Games for September 2016:

    Players to watch in 2016.

The link to the NCAA/NSCAA 2015 All Americans does not work for me, so I could not use that list to identify returning players to watch. I did find D3soccer.com’s list for 2015. My favorites below are in Bold.

D3soccer.com reports coaching changes for 2016.
    http://www.d3soccer.com/notables/coaching/2016-womens-carousel

Two Top 25 teams have new coaches:
    • At Trinity (TX) - Dylan Harrison (Trinity 2002) [7 years at D1 Nichols State] replaces 12-year head coach Lance Key, who takes an assistant coaching job at D1 University of Texas.
    • At Puget Sound – Joseph Vari [7 years at D3 Rhodes College] replaces 21-year head coach Randy Hanson, who retires from Puget Sound.
As a William Smith supporter, the following Liberty League coaching changes have my interest:
    • At RPI, BreLynn Nasypany (William Smith 2011) [2 years at D3 Mount Saint Mary] replaces 2-year coach Greg Cathell, who takes an assistant coaching job at D1 Sienna.
Last year was the away leg of a 2015-16 non- league home-and–home set between Nasypany's Mount Saint Mary squad and William Smith. RPI hosts William Smith this year, so she won’t miss out having a home game vs. her Alma Mater this year.
    • At Clarkson, Kelsey Yam (Skidmore 2013) [1 year assistant at Vassar] replaces 5-year coach Sarah Raymond who goes with her husband, who takes the head gridiron football coaching job at Williams.
Yam is a Liberty League veteran, having graduated from Skidmore , coached at Vassar, and now at RPI.

Does Raymond end up on Michelyne Pinard's staff at Williams?

I went to most of the William Smith invitational women’s soccer tournament in Geneva, NY Saturday and Sunday [#4 William Smith; #20 Puget Sound; #24 Oneonta; #Rec. Votes Denison]

I have some notes on the Social part and the Soccer part.

    Soccer Part.
    Results:
    WS-3 PS-1;
    ON-2 DEN- 1;
    PS-2 ON-1;
    WS-3 DEN-1.

    Players I thought did well:
Denison Sr. RFB Meg Sutter - Clayton, MO
Oneonta Jr. F/M Amanda Roney – Schoharie, NY

-----Oneonta subbed a lot, but when she was in, I liked Roney’s play

-----I felt Oneonta connected much better backline to midfield to forwards than Puget Sound did on Sunday and had much better midfield play. They didn’t have the one or two players who could power through for a score, but Puget Sound did.

Puget Sound So. LFB Veronica Chung – Woodinville, WA
Puget Sound So. F Lura Morton – Moscow, ID

-----I thought Morton was one of he best players in the tournament.

William Smith Sr. F/M Kara Shue – Fairport, NY

-----Shue had all 3 goals against Denison and has 4 goals and 3 assists for the first 3 games of the season.

William Smith Sr. LFB Emma Diehl – Brighton, NY

-----Diehl captains the team and does everything a Senior LFB should do, both on defense and offense.

These were season opening games for Puget Sound, Denison, and Oneonta. William Smith’s first game was an 8-1 win at Elmira this past Thursday.

    Social Part
The theme for the tournament was “We Can. We Will. “ The players’ events included a Friday visit to the National Women’s Hall of Fame [ https://www.womenofthehall.org/] and the Women’s Rights National Historical Park [ https://www.nps.gov/wori/index.htm,]; both in nearby Seneca Falls, NY . The Friday banquet’s keynote speaker was Daniele Bonafiglia-Wirth, Vice President of Bonadent Dental Laboratories (manufacturing $20 million /year of dentures, partials, implants, night guards, etc.). Each team also had one or two players speak at the banquet.

Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA) had a large contingent of parents, who came from all over Washington, parts of Oregon and Idaho, and even California to Geneva, NY.

I asked one parent why they came this far and she pointed to the field and said, “To watch our little girls who are big now.” I got the impression that she would have gone to East Nowhere to watch the game.

I asked most of the visiting parents who I talked with whether they having a good time. Every first comment was about the great weather, followed by the scenic campus. It was three sunny days and clear nights with highs ranging from 73-80 and a well-kept grass playing field. Perfect.

The players gotta love the game. After their morning game today, most of the Puget Sound players were relaxing on the stairs behind the south goal to watch the second game of the day or to wait for lunch, I don’t know which. At least half had ice bags attached to their bodies. Half of those had ice on two or more body parts.

NSCAA Rankings (8-2-16) shown, except HS indicates Herosports ranking

    #4 William Smith 2 at #3 Messiah 0

    #8 Illinois Wesleyan 0 at #21 Chicago 5

IW has losses to Trinity (TX) 5-0, Hardin-Simmons 1-0, and now Chicago 5-0 – it seems the team is not up to its form of the last few years.

#23HS TCNJ 2 at #15HS Johns Hopkins 2, two OTs

Given how well I felt Hopkins played in its 2-1 loss to Messiah on Wednesday, this result was a surprise to me.

    #11 Calvin 0 at #2 WashU 3

I glanced at this game on line – it seemed like an unremarkable contest to me.

    Notes on two Messiah games.
Johns Hopkins played Messiah on Wednesday .
    http://www.hopkinssports.com/sports/w-soccer/recaps/090816aaa.html

I watched the game Friday, to prepare for the Messiah vs. William Smith game on Saturday.

If a soccer game was decided by which team completed more passes, then Hopkins would have won this game handily. They had an effective ground game, but in the first half theygenerally were not dangerous in the final third, except when they played long balls down the flanks. The 34th minute goal was not due to flank play, but was finished by Sr. Meg Van de Loo of Eau Claire, WI. Van de Loo is a game changer.

Hopkins maintained its form through most of the game, and their possession game was their best defense. They maintained form even after the Messiah goal in the 68th minute. The game was looking to be going to OT, but Messiah jacked up intensity from the 80th minute on, resulting in the winning 86th minute goal.

Both Messiah goals resulted by great runs and finishing by Sr. Marisa Weaver of Carlisle, PA. The first featured a marvelous 25 yards on the ground through ball onto Weaver’s diagonal run by Sr. Kate Shults of Hurley, NY. The second featured a headed flick-on from a crouched position by Fr. Brooke Firestone from Dover, PA. Weaver was actually farther from the goal than Firestone wasat the moment of the flick; she anticipated it, bolted past her defender, ran alone onto the flicked ball and finished with authority. Weaver is a superior, and at times brilliant player.

William Smith played Messiah on Saturday.
I think the Messiah’ game report really captured the way the game unfolded. (Link above).

WS’s strategy couldn’t possibly have been more different from that employed by Hopkins against Messiah. WS pressed Messiah all the time all over the field. It seemed WS had a closing cover player backing up every challenge it made to a Messiah player with the ball, and the rest of the team shifted to mark players and block passing lanes. It was the kind of high pressure you may see a team play the first 10-15 minutes of a game or a half, but WS kept it up the whole game.

The pressure enabled WS to fashion good attacks which kept Messiah busy defending, particularly Marisa Weaver who spent a lot of the day tracking back on the right wing where she played. The game announcers commented that WS attacked down its left flank a lot throughout the first half, which was Weaver’s assigned attacking flank.. I was surprised Coach Frey did not switch her to Messiah’s left side in the second half. Weaver was so tied up defending, at one point she found herself clearing a ball from a position on the 18 yard line directly in front of the goal. A D-Mid, she is not supposed to be.

Even given the whole-team effort, the play of three Heron players was notable. So. Sarah Olick-Sutphen of Manlius, NY played up top, was dangerous whenever she had the ball, and scored the first goal with a very nice move to beat her defender(s). The play of center backs Sr. Bridget Westerman of Massapequa, NY and So. Katherine Campbell of Hampton, NJ was effective in keeping Messiah to two shots for the whole game, both in the first half and neither on goal.

I think Messiah is fine, but misses Nikki Elsaesser more than they would have hoped. WS has 8 seniors who played on the 2013 national championship team.

    9/13/16 NSCAA Poll #1, games thru 9-10-16

There was a lot of movement in and out of the Top 25; in particular, I noted:

Christopher Newport (4-0-0) is in at #11; I’m not familiar with their past success – they beat historically strong Carnegie Mellon and Wheaton (IL), 2-1 and 2-0, respectively.

Loras (4-0-0) is in at #12; historically a top 10 type team - but not recently.

    Games I saw this week

9-17 William Smith 3-1 over Rochester at Ithaca. Got there late and missed WS goals in the 2nd 10th and 14th minutes. Bleachers were relatively close to the field, so I got to see more of the holding, grabbing, and elbows than I usually do. Even after the 3rd goal WS was on the front foot most of the game. Being close, I got to see WS So. Phoebe Wade’s (M, Brooklyn, NY) footwork and ability to keep possession of the ball while being tackled – it was quite good.

9-18 WashU 0-0, 2OT at Illinois Wesleyan. Via stream, with no PBP. WashU had the most of the possession, but could not put one in. In my opinion, IWU demonstrated no attacking plan, failed to hold much possession at all, and relied on long ball counter attacks, which were rarely dangerous. IWU stubbornness got them through the final 20 minutes of regulation and both OT periods – I would not call it desperation defense, just refusing to give up while dog tired – WashU ran fresh legs into the game all the time, while IWU subbed a lot less.

Via DVR: D1 BYU vs Tennessee and some of BYU vs. SMU. I mention this here because BYU’s attacking possession game is marvelous and sets a very high standard for how the game can be played at the college level. It raised my expectations for what is possible even in D3.

I will comment on the results of the top 25 teams in my next post.

A few of the Top 15 ran into speed bumps this past week, while a handful of others kept on keepin’ on; the NSCAA Top 25 will be juggled when it comes out tomorrow.

Undefeated schools that stayed the course:
#1 Williams (5-0-0 w/ 4 Shutouts) Won 2: had 1-0 home wins vs. Colby and RPI.
    #2 William Smith (7-0-0) Won 3: Fredonia 7-0, Rochester 3-1, and Cortland 3-0.
#4 Trinity (TX) (5-0-0) Won 2: Sewanee 2-1 (Trinity scored in 1st OT), and Dallas (5-0).
#6 Chicago (6-0-0 w/ 5 shutouts) Won 2: Milwaukee School of Engineering 5-1, and North Central (IL) 6-0.
    #8 Stevens (6-0-0) Won 1-0 at Hartwick.
#9 Swarthmore (7-0-0 w/ all shutouts) Won 1-0 at Montclair State, and 3-0 over Franklin and Marshall
#13 Brandeis (7-0-0 w/ 6 shutouts) Won 5-0 over Eastern Connecticut State and 2-1 over Wentworth at home.

I've had my eye on Brandeis. The Judges have Oct 1 at Carnegie Mellon, and UAA games Oct 14 at Chicago, and Oct 16 at WashU which will show how good they are.

Swarthmore is not scoring as many goals as last year, but so far has an impenetrable defense. The Garnet hosts Johns Hopkins on Oct 1 and McDaniel on Oct 15.

    The speed bumps:
#3 WashU (5-1-1 w/ 6 shutouts) Lost 2-1 to #RV Wisconsin Whitewater and had a 0-0 draw at Illinois Wesleyan.
    #5 Centre (6-0-2) Drew 2: 1-1 at Wittenberg and 2-2 at Denison.
#10 Amherst (3-2-0) Lost 2: by 1-0 at Springfield and at Middlebury, won 1-0 over Wentworth at home.
#11 Christopher Newport (5-1-0) Lost 1-0 to Virginia Wesleyan and Won 2-1 over DeSales.
    #12 Loras (4-1-0) Lost 2-1 at #21 Augustana.
    #14 Misericordia (5-1-0 w/ 5 shutouts) Lost 3-1 at Arcadia.
....BTW, closer to (my) home, I am also watching RPI (4-1-0); the Engineers' first loss was Sunday at #1 Williams 1-0 on a 58th minute penalty kick. Their Oct 1 Liberty League home game vs. #2 William Smith should be a good one.

    [Nazareth 4 - RIT 0] I'm Back from HS#49 Nazareth at HS#92 RIT . HS = herosports.com rank (i.e. Bennett ranking)
    http://www.nazathletics.com/news/20...gattis-hat-trick-powers-naz-past-rit-4-0.aspx

Having no preconceptions, even before the Nazareth goals started coming, I noted #3 up top, #10 as attacking center mid, and #4 on the left wing were playing at a level above the competition.

(#3) Nazareth Jr. Julia Delgatti (F, Rochester, NY) scored her three goals in the first 21 minutes, and then was subbed out, so she did not re-enter the 1st half. She is a transfer from D1 Liberty University in Virginia.

(#10) Nazareth Sr. Michaela Soules (M, Camden, NY) assisted on the first goal and generally bossed the midfield until she was subbed out with Delgatti in the 22nd minute.

(#4) Nazareth Jr. Laura Herman (F, Pittsford, NY) had 2 assists, and was dangerous in attack on the left wing.

Nazareth plays at #7 Stevens this coming Saturday and could move into the top 25- they will have to contain the Stevens assist machine Jr. Raba Nassif in order to win.

I felt that RIT So. Lauren Chester (CB, Rochester, NY) did a fine job, particularly in the second half – she showed she can defend and then initiate the attack with pace and intelligence– she was let down by her other defenders in the first half.

I felt that RIT Fr. Abbey Saia (F, Monroe, CT) at outside left wing was RIT’s best player; controlling the ball, making good attacks and getting back on defense. Definitely did not play like a freshman. Not knowing the team, I would be tempted to move her to the middle of the field where she could have more impact on the whole game.

This RIT team is not up to the caliber of last year’s team, that held William Smith scoreless, eventually losing 1-0 on a 73rd minute PK in a Liberty League matchup.

btw….. NYS High School Section V includes the greater Rochester area, and is pretty much the eastern half of Western NY. Hailing from Section V myself, I note which D3 players I watch are local products. William Smith’s top two players F Kara Shue and D Emma Diehl are Section V players. Nazareth has 14 on its roster and starts 5. RIT has 4 rostered, and starts 2.

Except for Williams and Amherst playing to a 1-1 draw 2OT, all of my games of interest went to the better-ranked team. I watched some of #1 Williams at Amherst, but missed the Amherst 1st minute goal. Nice game story here: http://ephsports.williams.edu/sports/wsoc/2016-17/releases/20160924o99jbw

I did catch a little of #7 Stevens vs. Nazareth on the stream, and now I am even more excited about Stevens’ Sr. Raba Nassif (F, Northvale, NJ). When she has the ball, she is ice. Last year she lead the nation with 18 assists. Yesterday, her goals in the 13th and 19th minutes were like Steph Curry draining threes.

Williams may have graduated Crystal Lewin and Mai Mitsuyama, but they have re-loaded with Fr. Allison Lu of Palo Alto, CA ( 4G, 1A on 10 shots) and off-the-bench spark Fr. Sarah Kelly of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ ( 1G, 1A on 3 shots). [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ho-Ho-Kus,_New_Jersey.]
IMO, the Williams attack looked just as scary as it was last year. Credit to Amherst for holding the Ephs to only 1 goal. The Ephs led in SOG 12-4 and Corners 10-3.

BTW - as of January 2016, Amherst athletic teams are no longer the “Lord Jeffs.” http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/27/us/amherst-college-drops-lord-jeff-as-mascot.html?_r=0

The UAA strikes back with two upsets. Emory 2-0 over #4 Chicago and Rochester (winless going into the game) 3-1 over #12 WashU. #10 Brandeis held form with a 2-0 win at #24 Carnegie Mellon.

Couldn’t watch Loras-2 at #9 Wisconsin Whitewater-3 Wednesday– it seemed to be a good game. WWW goals in 7th and 10th min and Loras equalized with goals in 53rd and 71st min. Then the 5-minutes-after-a-goal demon struck. WWW scored in the 75th min and held on to win. Loras Jr. F Gretchen Schutz (Lodi, WI) scored both goals and leads her team on the season with 4G 2A.

Undefeated #4 Chicago-0 at Emory-2 was a fuzzy feed for me and I couldn’t stick with it. Emory’s spread-the-wealth offense (11 goal scorers, 13 assisters) scored in the 22nd and 86th min and their defense didn’t let Chicago across the line. Emory held Chicago to 9 shots with only 2 SOG.

I liked watching #2 Williams-1 at #20 Connecticut College-0. It was a tough 62 degrees or cooler with rain most of the game. CC was not in the game the first half, but took it to Williams in the second, and it took two great 2nd half saves by Williams So. GK Olivia Barnhill (NY, NY) to keep CC off the board. The camera was situated directly behind the north goal at a good elevation, which made watching quite absorbing for me, even without commentary. Williams seems to play with a pre-planned purpose; I couldn’t say if it is what is termed pattern play, but the players off the ball fill spots and it seems that wherever one player has the ball, she knows where the next pass can or should go.

I watched most of the first half of Johns Hopkins 2-1 win at #6 Swarthmore. It was a choppy game, with very few strings of 3 or more completed passes for either team. Nonetheless, I felt that JH had the better of things. Hopkins scored in the 5th and 64th, with Swarthmore Jr. M Sarah Hancock ( Collegeville, PA) equalizing directly from a corner kick in the 57th ( gol olimpico).

My #1 William Smith Herons looked a little flat while winning 1-0 at #RV Rensselaer Saturday, after their 8-0 Friday win at Skidmore. I shouldn’t take anything away from RPI, who are a tough squad, as demonstrated by opening the season 8-1, giving up only one goal in a 1-0 loss at then #1 Williams, and now doing the same to William Smith.

BTW – I have been seeing that D3 Keepers generally punt the ball NFL style, with a few dropkicking it like the pros do. This weekend I saw that RPI Fr. Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD) and Connecticut College Jr. Bryanna Montalvo (Rocky Hill, CT) are dropkickers. Both had excellent games on Saturday.
