What happened to Nouri makes me wanna cry. It's really sad. So unfair.
Watching some of his videos, he seemed to be really a humble nice guy, let alone his great talent. I only hope for him to recover and live his life as a normal guy. No human being should ever go through this.

It was the cup match last season away against Kozzaken Boys. Bosz started Nouri and he had a wonderful match. I only caught the second half so I didn't do a match report. The amazing thing is that at the end of the match how popular Nouri was with everyone. All the young supporters came out of the stands to get his autograph and picture. For me this is what Nouri meant to everyone in Dutch football, selfless and happy to play the game.

    In levensgevaar,

    Sterkte man... namens het Legioen.

Nice does not have the notoriety of PSG, OM, Saint-Etienne, Lyon or Monaco, but it's a difficult draw. It is a well organized and seductive team with players that I personally like very much like Seri, Cyprien and Dalbert. It will be difficult but I think Ajax is superior. The team should just avoid last year's stupid defensive mistakes in the Europa League.

  9. Why do you think that? They were 3d in the French league.
Ajax did get a tough draw. Several other options would have been far more preferable. This isnot the team you want to play, while you're still in preps and now also in a mental shock after the horrible incident.

I would have preferred to play against another team. I also said it's a complicated draw but nothing insurmountable. We have, in my humble opinion, better players on an individual level. But Ajax will have to be concentrated to win this match. My main concern is that our defenders sometimes make grotesque mistakes in crucial matches. I note that this is a common evil to all Dutch football.

I remember the last time an Ajax defender tried to stop Ballotelli. It did not end well.

So sad what happened to Nouri. So suddenly his life has changed forever. His family must be in shock. I still hope the medical team will help him to survive and have a decent life in the future. Only 'good' thing is the reactions from all around the football community. Rivalries can be fierce but these events shows how united the football community can be.

That said, how strange the situation is the CL draw took place. Nice seems to me the most difficult opponent possible.Very strong team with lots of young talents. Monaco was the suprise of the season but Nice did an equally amazing job, considering Nice is normally a mid table team. The do have a lot of (Chinese?) money however. Ajax are weakened imo now Klaassen left the club. And with Tete and maybe Riedewald left as well, their bench didn't get any stronger. With all the money they have, it is a bit weird they didn't try to sign any first 11 players.

Honestly nothing will matter this season after such a tragedy. Some players like Van de Beek who were really close to Nouri will be affected for sure.

I don't even care about sport or results anymore after this. Will need a good long year for everyone to "mourn".

I don't frequent this forum that often anymore but I'm here because I am mourning, because I am sad, because I saw in Nouri myself, a devout Muslim family who was as Dutch as hagelslag and a smile that could stop an army. Nouri is Ajax, Nouri is Amsterdam, Nouri was the future. I'm sad, I am distraught. What a cruel world.

The bench is very poor with the departures of Tete and Riedewald and the tragedy that affects Nouri

1-1 draw is a fair result. Both teams squandered chances in the final 10 minutes. We will quickly find out about the depth of this Ajax team as Veltman, Sanchez, de Ligt, Schöne and van de Beek all saw well deserved Yellow Cards. I'm liking how Kiezer has the team play up tempo pressing football; it's just what he did with Jong Ajax last season. The players have bought into this and there were numerous turnovers created. Some shoddy defending along the way and Onana had to be on his toes.

    Player Ratings:

Onana (6.5) - no chance on the goal but made some good saves; fortunate that an intercepted pass wasn't turned into a goal
Viergever (6) - other than being way too slow to catch up to the Nice winger on the goal he had a decent enough match
de Ligt (6.5) - one poor entry pass early on that was turned into a quick counter but after that pretty solid
Sanchez (6.5) - some pretty decent defending but a couple of poor plays; Ajax is just the right spot for him
Veltman (6) - OK but as with all the RBs before him seldom ventured forward
Schöne (6.5) - controlled the ball pretty well before coming off
van de Beek (6.5) - great goal but a reckless challenge late that would have drawn Red in the Eredivisie
Ziyech (7.0) - best player on the pitch for me, solid on the ball good passing
Younes (4.5) - German International??? Not today
Dolberg (5) - Dante had him under control though he was active on the ball in the late stages of the game
Kluivert (5.5) - very good pressing and very average in everything else
Neres (6) - I suspect he will be starting over Kluivert very soon, good on the ball and great field sense
de Jong (6) - very hard shot on goal and his passing was outstanding

Next week in Amsterdam and Ajax just need to keep up the hard pressure and they will do alright.

Another round. If they get by Nice they will draw one of the following:

    Sevilla (ESP) 112.999
    Napoli (ITA) 88.666
    Liverpool (ENG) 56.192
    Sporting CP (POR) 36.866
    Hoffenheim (GER) 15.899

EDIT: I forgot that Ajax will have over 57 UEFA points and be seeded in the next round if they advance. Thus, they would not play Sevilla, Napoli or Liverpool who would also be seeded. Don't know about the other two teams on the list above as it will depend on the other four teams that advance from the fourth qualifying round.

What they should be doing is starting like this:

    Onana
Veltman - Sanchez - de Ligt - Viergever
    van de Beek
    de Jong - Ziyech
    Neres - Dolberg - Kluivert

Younes is simply not good enough. Kluivert is electric from the left side, and Neres is a great talent who was better than both against Nice (though he had the advantage of coming on against tired defenders and running at them at a time when Ajax were controlling the match). Badly need Sinkgraven back, and buying another leftback would be prudent (and a RB tbh, Veltman is not great, and would be better served as a back-up CB/RB).
