Maradona Owns Up to Using Hand in '86 Cup

    Tuesday, August 23, 2005
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Diego Maradona acknowledged that he struck the ball with his hand in the famous "Hand of God" goal against England in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals.

Speaking on his local television talk show Monday night, Maradona called one of soccer's most controversial goals "something that just came out of me. It was a bit of mischief."

Maradona appeared to punch the ball into the net, and officials allowed the goal to stand despite protests by the English team. Argentina went on to win the 1986 quarterfinal match 2-1 and then win the World Cup.

In his most detailed comments yet, Maradona said he was unable to reach the ball for a header when he went up against the taller English goalkeeper, Peter Shilton.

Shilton "was very tall. He didn't see anything, and a teammate told him" afterward what happened, said Maradona.

After the score, Maradona said he quickly realized the line referee had allowed the goal but none of his teammates had rushed to celebrate with him - themselves figuring the goal would be waved off.

"I was waiting for my teammates to embrace me and no one came," said Maradona, who was the team captain. "I told them, 'Come hug me or the referee isn't going to allow it.'"

In his 20-year career before retiring in 1997, Maradona starred at Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors and in Europe. He also led Argentina to the 1990 World Cup final and won Italian and Argentine league titles.

In 1991, Maradona failed a drug test and was banned for 15 months. Nine years later, FIFA chose him and Pele as the best players in soccer history.

Recently, he was appointed vice president of Boca Juniors. And with his new TV show, Maradona, 45, has returned to the limelight after years of dealing with cocaine addiction and health problems.

If I remember correctly, in this game Maradona was roughly fouled several times and almost had his head bashed in by one of the English defenders prior to scoring the "Hand of God" goal. Not to justify cheating but I don't think "Fair Play" was on the England agenda that day either. Maradona recently made a statement in regard to Shilton's continued whinning about the goal, fair play etc..."If Shilton were to scooop a ball out of the goal as it just barely crossed the line I don't think he would bring it to the refs attention that it indeed was a goal" Unfortunately the win at all cost attitude is prevelant all over the world.

Like i've said before, no one needs to justify his cheating, it's a part of the game, and everyone knows (except when it's the side that was cheated on) that even for that you need a bit of genius, and maradona had it all.... He was one of the greatest footballers in history, i am very happy to see him back in his feet and hope he will have an impact in the world again... The only thing i believe (and not trying to start a war here) is that he couldn't be compared to Pele only because they wee different times, only because pele was the first king, in my humble opinion I only feel as if he had inherited the crown, and he wore it beautifully....

Robinho finally in real (check this out)

Me neither, because there is no conversing about this. Di Stefano was the best period, he played for Real in Europe not the Cosmos in the USA

Umm Robihnio has a looooong way to go to get respect for the hype.... remember Rivaldo??? Brazilians get way too much hype before they even prove themselves. And I don't know anything eh??? Well tell me how would Plele have done in Europe had the Brazilian FA allowed him to leave and play there??? Fact is DiStefano has accomplished so many records that only now some of them are being matched. True internationaly he did not factor in, but that is neither here nor there, if we really want to talk about brazilaoins I respect lets look at Garrincha!!

Viejo, listen... i don't think Robinho is even close to pele, You're the one who said Distefano is better than Pele for having played in Real, well, now Robinho is there with distefano's shirt.. so i don't think your comment was that healthy...
Anyway, you just got some respect with me now though, for respecting Garrincha, if there is on player that might have been better than Pele or maradona it's Garrincha.. just wish the clips and games on him were more abundant.....

Back to robinho real quick - did you see his debut in real? I'm not going to post it here cause they'll say i'm spamming... my sig has my webpage check it out frontpage has a video with his highlights on the game, he has a long way to go.. but the kid is showing a lot of skills man.....
