Jogi’s new-look Germany ready for San Marino

Coach Joachim Löw has taken Germany’s trip to San Marino for a FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifier as an opportunity to try out some fresh faces. Three young Bundesliga starlets could get their first cap, and a goalscoring legend joins him on the coaches’ bench.

Germany’s drive to defend their World Cup title reaches its next stop in San Marino on Friday. The microstate near Italy’s Adriatic coast has just over 30,000 inhabitants; the last time their national side played Germany, Löw’s men walked away 13-0 winners. A good time, perhaps, to risk trying a few new things.

Löw has taken that chance with both hands. He’s called in three new players to the squad, brought back a further four who have three caps or fewer, and despite losing a string of players to injury for the match (Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Julian Brandt, Toni Kroos) he has declined to bring more players in. The group he’s got suits him.

It’s an opportune time to rely on the strength of Germany’s youth. The Bundesliga is turning out players of international class as never before. Newcomers to die Mannschaft like SV Werder Bremen’s Serge Gnabry, Yannick Gerhardt of VfL Wolfsburg, and Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s Benjamin Henrichs have shown great promise, and now will have their chance to show what they can do on the senior international stage.

"Hi fans, I hope you're all doing well. Last Wednesday I had an operation on my posterior cruciate ligament. The surgery went well and I'm on the road to recovery. I'll now start a relatively long period of rehabilitation, which I'll go into with everything I've got! I'll give my all to be back on the pitch again soon. I've always come back strong and will do so again this time.

We have a lot of plans with our new Dortmund coach Peter Bosz and with the national team at the World Cup in Russia. My main aim is to be in peak fitness in the new year so that I can go all out in the business end of the season.

Thank you so much for all your support. It means a great deal to me and gives me strength for the difficult time I have ahead of me.

I wish Jogi Löw and the boys all the best at the Confederations Cup.

    Yours, Marco!"

I really hope he is finally fully fit to play in a tournament, but I would not be surprised if both he and Gündogan are both injured again this time next year, as usual.

He is 28 and only has 29 caps, which is a shame because he is a world class talent.

I seriously do NOT want to see Reus on those list of .
"World Class players who never played a WC!"

still can't believe that such a great player only played at the EC12 and mostly on the bench too.

Reus and Gundogan are 2 players that need to go injury free, they can add a lot to the team. Crosses fingers.

We must pray a lot for both of them, Germany really need them 2018 to defend the title

"Meyer, meanwhile, has set his sight on winning the U21 Euro in Poland. He said: "We're one of the favourites for the Championship. But Spain, Italy and England are on a level with us. We have to perform better than them on the deciding day."

For Meyer, the Euros are also an important event to make it back to the senior team after national team coach Joachim Low excluded him from the team that is travelling to Russia for the Confederations Cup.

"I'm in constant exchange with the national team coach. The talks give me confidence. I want to and ought to stand out [in Poland], lead the team and put myself on the radar of the senior team."

Bild | Leon Goretzka is a threat to Sami Khedira's starting spot at the World Cup next year

let's see how Goretzka does for the entire CC 1st but the problem with Khedira is that WC18 is most likely is final tournament anyways. Will be 33 at the EC20. So it would make sense to give Goreztka a chance depending on how the next year goes.

    --------------------Neuer
    -Kimmich-Boateng-Hummels--Hector
    ------------Emre Can-Kroos
    ---L.Sane----Goretzka-------Draxler
    --------------------Werner

I would prefer to find a way to get Mueller on the pitch instead of Draxler. Mueller has been fantastic in 2 WCs and only mediocre in his ECs.

Jonas Hector and Lars Stindl can do what Marcel Schmelzer, Max Kruse, Kevin Volland can't do for NT

Looks like some players have guaranteed their places in the WC roster next year

    GK) Neuer, ter Stegen

    RB) Kimmich
    CB) Boateng, Hummels, Howedes
    LB) Hector

    DM/CM) Khedira, Kroos
    RW) Mueller
    AM) Oezil, Goretzka
    LW) Draxler, L.Sane

    CF) Timo Werner, Mario Gomez

Those 16 spots, these players are almost guaranteed to be there in WC 2018. n we got 7 left

Apparently.............a backup keeper, another 2 CBs, a backup wingback/fullback, 2 central midfielders (if Gundogan if fit i think he will be there, so Weigl/Emre Can for the last spot), n a winger are all needed (if Reus is fit he will be there or else Brandt/Schuerrle?)

    Backup keeper:: Trapp, Leno ,Pollersbeck

Backup CBs (two from): Ruediger, Mustafi, Niklas Stark, Sule

backup wingback: Henrichs, Toljan or Plattenhardt

Backup CM/DMs (two from) : Weigl, Emre Can, Rudy, Gundogan

Backup winger: Reus, Brandt or Schuerrle

Here is another 17 players. Plus Stindl.............maybe Loew has a national pool of around 34 players currently

I would bring at current stage

    GK) Neuer, ter Stegen, Trapp

    RB) Kimmich
CB) Boateng, Hummels, Howedes, Rudiger, Sule
    LB) Hector

    DM/CM) Khedira, Kroos, Gundogan, CAN
    RW) Mueller, Brandt
    AM) Oezil, Goretzka
    LW) Draxler, L.Sane, Reus

    CF) Timo Werner, Stindl

Yes no backup for Hector and Kimmich , but a Howedes could fill in for those two, as he had done before ... I think this team....is more or less the best we have...
