I'm not sure what he means when he says "CPL will do more for Canadian soccer in 10 yrs than MLS has done for US Soccer in 20 yrs." Sounds somewhat patronizing. Also this statement is based on what exactly? or is it just more of a feeling than an informed statement? I mean as soccer fans we all hope CPL will help Canadian soccer and we look forward MLS,Liga MX and CPL competition in CONCACAF---no need to throw shade around.
CPL main focus will be developing players, expanding the pool and strengthening the National team. I'm not physically there so I can't speculate on what question was asked or on what context he's referring. I'd leave it at that he believes that CPL can do what MLS did for the USMNT faster by having the league taking measures to ensure that the pool expands and upgrades, such as having clubs guaranteeing a minimum amount of minutes for U-23 players similar to what Liga MX does. The shots that he took tonight was mainly aimed at our 3 MLS Canadian teams. Development-wise, they've been an utter joke since MLS came to Canada
Ask a moderator to shut down the thread if you're aggravated. Believe it or not, I was the one who asked to have it down and they felt it belonged, so I'm posting what's on topic.
sniff, sniff ... i am sure getting a strong whiff of naslism from this guy. if this league ends up being as good in comparison to mls as the cfl is to the nfl i'd be pleasantly surprised.
I think it's interesting how they will place a hard cap on teams in CPL so as to start a Div II and then start pro/rel. As long as this is made clear to all investors of potential Div I teams, then there's no better time to do it than right at the beginning. It becomes tougher to do pro/rel the longer you wait and the more investors put more and more of their money into the team. Having the single table leader at the end of the season be the league winner makes more sense for Canada. Having playoffs would make the soccer season longer and would make it more likely to run into the possibility of playing right into the beginning of the cold (which starts earlier in Canada). Under those conditions it makes more sense to have a shorter season that wraps up early. MLS playoffs with home and away legs extend the MLS season by almost a month. One point where MLS and CPL will be similar will be that they are forced to play through some dates in the summer. Notice how he said that CPL will respect FIFA dates "whenever possible." It's just plain tough to have a summer league, end on time, and still rest on all summertime FIFA dates.
He means status-wise. MLS is the USA Division 1 league. CPL will be Canada Division 1 league. Accepting MLS 2 teams makes no sense and is counter-productive to that goal.
Trolling? I'm reporting tweets. If you're unhappy with this thread, take it to a mod If you're unhappy with what's being reported, send a tweet to Paul Beirne, he's very available Since you obviously haven't read what was reported, CPL never claimed it will surpass MLS in the US, that's utter nonsense. However in Canada? Very likely Vague assurances? Well it was enough for the Vancouver Whitecaps to us CPL coming to Metro Vancouver as a factor to fold Whitecaps II.
Instead of posting every tweet in here, maybe be cognizant of which forum this thread is in and keep the posts to CPL news related to MLS. There is a CPL thread in the Canada forum where you can do your news dumps.
Then change the title to reflect that if that's what you want. It was changed once before then change it again so it reflects what you just posted
I will, but clarifying the title is for others to also know that news should be only MLS related as others also posted replies that had nothing to do with MLS.
Canada’s answer to SUM: https://www.forbes.com/sites/bobbym...nd-the-seed-of-future-conflicts/#5aa5e7c2b983 https://www.canadasoccer.com/canadian-soccer-association-s14866
That’s not a bad idea, TBH. It could be argued that creating SUM saved MLS. The CPL starting with a SUM equivalent definitely gives them a leg up.
