But where Jost & others get it wrong (or are just being snarky which I know is his job) is that the Democrat's big tent is supposed to cover minorities, white working class, coastal "elites" and others that wouldn't be welcomed in the nearly completely white Republican party. The Hillary approach was mostly Trump demonization & it didn't sway enough people. Tactics may have to change. But I don't believe the party's core values do. Trumpism was the shiny new thing this election but it ain't built to last
Yes, and the problem is when all those sections in the tent start to pull in different directions. You need a voice to unify them, if not all enough to win, Clinton could not do that.

If your message is consistent and not based on identity politics, you can have effective messaging with 1,000 subgroups.

It's almost certainly genetic. But I take your point as confirmation that sexist jokes are okay, but jokes about other categories are not. Which seems to be hypocritcial, but George Carlin and Richard Pryor made a career out of it so who am I to judge?
First of all, genuflect when you mention two of the greatest comedians America has ever produced. Men are pigs in general but most of us try to do the right thing for the most part. On the flip, if Demosthenes or flowergirl ridiculed men in general, Obama's mom jeans or Trump's little dickedness I would laugh.
Who wouldn't? Jokes are jokes. Not statements of fact. Peoples bungholes are way too tight these days. And I'd put up my bona fides as a fan of Carlin & Pryor -- and Shelley Berman while we're at it -- any day.
