Gio is a good choice. I wish him well. I always liked Alecko as a player and Llamosa has good contacts and experience. They certainly could have assembled a much worse coaching staff. At least they avoided going with a foreigner who has no experience with American soccer.
Football in New York - The Economist I don't know that anything in here is news so I posted this here in the Cosmos thread. Some of the quotes from O'Brien make me wonder sometimes...like they do in this article.
"LE: Are there international friendlies being scheduled for the Cosmos? Stover: Yes, we have an announcement coming up shortly in the next couple weeks." Interesting! Wonder who and when it will be, probably July.
I heard they had Galatasery lined up a early in January and were sorting it out but they backed out after their winter transfer signings of Drogba and Sneijder. Probbaly that was what they were anticipating announcing back then. From what i hear they are in active talks with a couple other clubs for summer friendlies, but its touch and go due to some clubs availability issues and conflicts with the big tours going on this summer with a few soccer promoters.
Could be. MLS rules put "a U.S. National Team player who signs with MLS after playing abroad, or a former MLS player who returns to the League after having gone to a club abroad for a transfer fee" through the allocation process. How they define "a U.S. National Team player" strictly, I don't quite know. There was some kerfuffle years ago about Johnny Walker (who had all of three caps), wasn't there? Can't remember precisely. Anyway, yes, the Cosmos certainly wouldn't have to do any gymnastics to sign any US National Team players. I don't know how many of them they would be likely to get, but that's certainly one possibility for that comment. MLS also has a certain number of international and young international slots, so he could mean that, too.
Rogers would certainly seem to qualify. He doesn't seem to be interested in resuming playing at the moment, but that could change. One would hope they'd do it because they feel he can play, and not as a publicity stunt.
Considering his playing credentials I would assume any NASL side would be happy to have a player of Rogers quality, so I think there is little danger in a mere publicity stunt signing. Also, that type of move doesn't jive with how this current Cosmos leadership does things.
