I was having a conversation with our very own Martin Del Palacio the other night and I told him that I was pissed that Mexico would not be able to take their World Cup squad to Copa America because of the CONCACAF U-23 rule.

IMO, Mexico will have a very solid team starting the new cycle. Strong enough to challange for the Copa America. And I would like nothing more than to hoist that wonderful trophy in Argentina of all places. Martin said that it did not matter because of the five refuerzos and we began making probable line ups but I think he was drunk, lol, and we did not finish the team.

So, I present to you fellow BSMX posters this thread. Let us build probable line ups and next year we can see how close or far off we were. Which players are currently in a hot streak and by the summer of 2011 will be out of the radar.

    Current Squad:

GK Luis Ernesto Michel (1979-07-21) (age 30)
GK Guillermo Ochoa (1985-07-13) (age 24)
GK Óscar Pérez (1973-02-01) (age 37)

DF Paul Aguilar (1986-03-06) (age 24)
DF Efraín Juárez (1988-02-22) (age 22)
DF Jonny Magallón (1981-11-21) (age 28)
DF Rafael Márquez (1979-02-13) (age 31)
DF Héctor Moreno (1988-01-17) (age 22)
DF Ricardo Osorio (1980-03-30) (age 30)
    DF Francisco J. Rodríguez (1981-10-20) (age 28)
DF Carlos Salcido (1980-04-02) (age 30)
DF Jorge Torres Nilo (1988-01-17) (age 22)

MF Israel Castro (1980-12-29) (age 29)
MF Jonathan dos Santos (1990-04-26) (age 20)
MF Andrés Guardado (1986-09-28) (age 23)
MF Gerardo Torrado (1979-04-30) (age 31)
MF Pablo Barrera (1987-06-21) (age 22)
MF Cuauhtémoc Blanco (1973-01-17) (age 37)

FW Adolfo Bautista (1979-05-15) (age 31)
FW Giovani dos Santos (1989-05-11) (age 21)
FW Guillermo Franco (1976-11-03) (age 33)
FW Javier Hernández (1988-06-01) (age 21)
FW Alberto Medina (1983-05-29) (age 26)
FW Carlos Vela (1989-03-01) (age 21)

CONCACAF, the regional governing body, said Wednesday that other than the five wild-card players, others on the team will be restricted to players eligible for the 2012 London Olympics, limited to players born in 1989 or later. Mexico has been in every Copa America since 1993.

Judging by the above statement the only eligible WC players we would have are; The Dos Santos Brothers and Carlos Vela. My best guess is that the five wild-card players will be; one goal keeper, two defenders, one midfielder, and one striker.

So my team so far consists of: Ochoa, Maza, Moreno, Jonathan, Guardado, Gio, ChichaRiot and Vela. I went with the WC squad players because they will have played together the longest.

Young players that I can think off at the top of my head; Cesar Ibanez, Edgar Pacheco, Juan O'Campo, Michel Vasquez, Christian Perez, Jorge Enriquez and Tony Lopez. Well, that is it for now. I am very interested in what the rest of you have to offer.

One thing I have noted; using wiki; O'campo, Perez, Vasquez, Lopez and Enriquez are all between 183/185m. Hot damn. Talk about fielding a tall squad. I will have to double check other sites but if the height is correct it is impressive.

I must protest, I wasn't drunk... I was completely wasted! I don't even remember having that conversation hehehe, jk I don't have time to analyse other players but it has it's pros and cons, at least we won't be eliminated again from the Olympic tournament.

    MOD NOTE:

Estamos hablando de la Sele que participara en la Copa America. Solo puedes tener 5 jugadores nacidos antes del 89. Y parece que Marquez se retira despues del Mundial.

    Overage players should be:

GK: Ochoa (or Orozco if Ochoa moves to Europe)
DC: ??? (I would say one of Maza or Moreno but they will likely only play the GC)
DMC: Torrado and Castro are a bit long of tooth but my bet would be for one of those two
AMC: I would love to see Hobbit get some love here
    FWD: Nerry

Ideally we would need to figure out what the GC squad will be before we can fill in the gaps for the CA as its entirely possible that even some of the eligible players like Vela and the Dos Santos brothers get only one of the two tournaments, if so which one should they play and who replaces them on the other squad. Same goes for any of the prospective overage players that ply their trade in Europe.

    Seriously.

Now, assuming the Gold Cup is given its due importance next year (CC berth on the line) what are the possible scenarios?

A team to Gold Cup and B team to Copa America?

A mixture of both (A & B) for both tourneys?

Once we know for sure what stance the FMF is taking, It'd be easier to decide who goes where. My guess is that most of the Euros will play the Gold Cup, with a few players from the GC squad shifting over to the Copa squad.

At this point, it's hard to tell. Plus I'm hungover and on my way to some tacos de papa dorada.

I am cool with the Idea that players (based in Europe) should not be forced to play both tournaments, the FMF must decide what is more important.

Vela and Gio should be in the Copa America team and not in the Gold cup, yes that means missing a pre-season, so maybe consulting their respective teams would be a good idea. Both do not force them to play both.

I know that Comebol said 5 over age players, but they can only send 3 to the Olympics (none to qualification) so the FMF should only send 3 to Argentina (they will send 5).

as current champions, Mexico should put priority to the gold cup.

send vela to the gold cup and send him packing to arsenal after its over, bring in Nery for both tourneys

Pacheco was born in 1990, Calderon could be another possilbility he was born in 89. If we choose to bring vela and gio as much as I would like to see them compete for a copa america title I think we should only use them for the gold cup. Winning this gold cup would mean we make it to the conderations cup 2013.

i want to see, reyna, esqueda, omar arellano, chore mejia, pato araujo worked in since were gonna need replacements for guys like blanco, torrado for 2014 world cup. copa america would be a good way to break them in along with guys like gio, vela, chicharo, moreno, nilo, aguilar, jonathan, guardado, maza, maybe nery.

Yes, but they will be 24 in 2012 when the Olympics are played.

That is why it is '89 and over.

Not sure about this, but my question is; are euro teams obligated to release players for the copa america? Specifically mexico since we are invited to the tourny.

Yes, it is during the summer so teams "have" to let them play. It may be different if the tournament was played during the season, then Invited teams may have problems getting players, but the South American teams would not have any Issue with getting the players.

Yes I know that it will be winter in Argentina, I meant to say July.

its still in the off-season so if a player wants to play in it, and they already have their starting spot secured, they're usually free to go.
