If it were up to me, I'd add another Comets/Wave series to the schedule, just for fun. Man that was some good stuff. Good job by your boys
I'm not sure i could take another series like that again lol...Hats off to the Comets they've always gave us a run for our money and this year after four years we got one past them. Always love watching these two teams play and can't wait to see what happens the rest of the playoffs!
Why are some of the lower seeded teams getting home-field advantage? Are some of the arenas dates that filled that they can't schedule the higher seed with home-field advantage? Case in point, Kansas City/Milwaukee series. What's the point of winning your division if the lower seeded team gets the advantage.
There really seems to be a misconception among MASL fans that there exists home-field advantage in a two-game series. Each team gets ONE home game, and then you play a mini-game (which is a complete crap shoot). There's really no advantage to playing that mini-game at home, unless you're Sonora playing on that tiny field. In fact, the numbers seem to support the case that hosting Game 1 provides the greatest advantage under this format. Coming into this year, under the current format since 2009, teams winning Game 1 at home and then traveling for Game 2/3 have a series record of 11-2 (now 11-3 with the Wave winning). Overall, the past two seasons, teams that win Game 1 are 13-2. Hosting Game 1 gives a team the advantage (fatigue and $$-wise) of only having to travel once (as opposed to twice) as well as the opportunity to put all the pressure on the opposing team and getting two chances to win the series on the second match day.
There also exists this misconception that there's no reason for a higher seed not to have the second (and possible third) games at home, or that the league is "cheating" teams it doesn't like by making them play on the road in the first game, thus stripping them of the supposed 2/3rd game advantage. (Since we're talking numbers, the team hosting the second and potential third game/golden goal deal had advanced in 19 of 35 two-game series since 2006. So there's an advantage by that set of numbers, though not a huge one, and you'd actually have to dive a bit deeper to see how much being at home had to do with any of it.) As bbwavefan points out, winning game one puts you in really good position. And being at home gives you a better chance of winning that first game, given home teams won 62 percent of the games in the MASL this year. I don't know how someone has to travel once and someone else has to travel twice, though, in this type of setup. Both teams have to travel from their home city to the other city and back. If you host game one, you travel to the other city for game two and back after game two. If you host game two, you travel to the other city for game one and back after game one. Two trips each. (Or two legs of one trip, if you prefer to look at it that way.) That's the point of the exercise, so there's no third game to be necessary on short notice a couple of days later and for someone to have to try to scramble to get there.
(That should read "...or that the league is "cheating" teams it doesn't like by making them play at home in the first game, thus stripping them of the supposed 2/3rd game advantage.")
Because traveling home after Game 2/3 is not an obstacle because the series is over. It doesn't matter in a Baltimore/Harrisburg or San Diego/Ontario series, but let's say it's Baltimore/Milwaukee. The Wave have to fly here for Game 1, while the Blast can do their regular routine. Then BOTH teams have to fly to Milwaukee for Game 2/3. If there's a week between Games 1 and 2 it kind of negates the impact of that, though, because the Wave will have been home for 5 or 6 days by the time the Blast fly out.
Both teams will have players who have put in a 40 hour work week at a real job somewhere during those 5-6 day breaks.
Are visa players allowed to work at another job? Just curious. I don't know how many visa players there even are in the league.
No but sort of.......Most visa athletes would be on a P1 visa. You can pretty much do any service for that team. I would think that running a coaching clinic would fit into that. But you cannot go out to Applebee's and start waiting tables. After a few years of P1 you can amend your status to allow any employment. You are usually given a work visa with an end date while they are processing your green card.
The Ambush have some visa guys. They can only 'work for' the Ambush. So if such a player were offered a paid coaching gig by another organization/academy, they could do it but would get paid (through legal maneuvers) by the Ambush. That is what the team officials explained to some fans recently. One of our visa guys, Lucas Almeida, is now working full time in the team office selling tickets, etc. He was doing that part time during the season too.
