Or just a sign of a rising Costa Rica. They have three teams (albeit by default) in this year's tournament, and there's a good possibility of all three going through (two through Mexican clubs). They also took the Copa Centroamericana and got further in the World Cup than both the US and Mexico beating both England and Uruguay along the way. Granted Central America as a whole was very strong in the last year or two with Panama making the Gold Cup final and nearly edging Mexico to the World Cup. Honduras performed well at the Olympics and is sending more and more players to Europe. They also have the easiest (this is wrong) group of all the Mexican entrants. Real España and Municipal are nowhere near as good as Alajuelense or Herediano. E2A: Oh I see what you were responding to. And looking at it again, actually America has a possibly easier group with Bayamon (possibly the worst team in the tournament, aren't even playing in a league right now) and Comunicaciones. With 8 matches still to be played of course, how the knockout stages look right now: Herediano (CRC) vs. LD Alajuelense (CRC) DC United (USA) vs. Impact de Montréal (CAN) --- Portland Timbers (USA) vs. Sporting Kansas City (USA) CF Pachuca (MEX) vs. Club América (MEX)
Of course, Herediano have maxed out their games, so they could end up as low as fifth place in the end. The main takeaway is that there could be a few domestic showdowns in the knockout round.
