Wait, so Christmas will be miserable because anyone sent to Tashkent labor camps is supposed to agree with your reading of that situation, and if they don't they're...? Well, you'll have to fill that blank in.
Says who? As a form of protest? Is this a trick question? Says who? You're making a lot of unjustified assertions.
If anthem doesn't symbolise the country, why to have it? You can deal away with it first, and later with entire country. Protesting against what? Rather offending people who hold it dear. Maybe he would rather have Confederate anthem, Soviet one, or North Korean, or maybe none... Do Americans see it as some sort of Freedom of speech thing?
How about just no anthems at sporting events. It's such a Soviet habit. Even authoritarian Russia doesn't play anthem at every sporting event. It's not a national holiday. The game has no national significance. We don't play the anthem at other gatherings like theater or concerts. It's just a cheap marketing synergy trick. "Everyone likes America. Let's associate our brand with America."
Who makes the decision about what symbolizes the country for everyone? No one. There is no logic in this comment. There is no logic in this comment either. Hi, Supernintendo Chalmers!
Why even play an anthem when two teams from the same country are playing each other in a domestic league? Add to that in soccer the consideration that many of the players aren't even from that country. Or, why not play the anthem before game shows when people are competing against each other?
Speaking of anthems, why in the MLS All Star Game was the U.S. anthem played before the game, but not the Spanish anthem? Inquiring minds wish to know.
We routinely go way beyond respectful acknowledgement of patriotism and way into the realm of super-jingo theater. In the NFL that super-jingo is unacknowledged sponsored content. The Pentagon pays the NFL to go all 'ruffles and flourishes' but neither the league or the Pentagon say so in the moment. It is no different than a big pregame advertisement for pepsi. In this case the target audience is expected to sing the Pepsi song AND its three extra verses. It is an exercise in cynical conformity training. Go watch the movie "Billie Jack' it has a plotline about this. Remember! Conformity is not a virtue save in extreme emergency.
Remember when Roseanne Barr parodied just this, thinking people would understand the irony. Fail...!!! She and Tom Arnold had to go into hiding and record an abject apology. Those drunken fans wanted blood!
Because the match happened in the United States; and if you don't play our national anthem before a sporting event held in the United States, some people will get cranky. I remember a match between two non-U.S. teams, possibly in the recent U.S.-based Copa America, where the anthems of the participating countries were played, but the U.S. Anthem was not played. Predictably, some right-wingers/Fox News got upset.
My point being, when Canadian teams play in the U.S., we play the Canadian anthem in addition to the U.S. anthem. Who plays only one anthem when teams from two countries meet?
