English flavour to quarter-final draw Tuesday 11 March 2008 Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal FC) (©Getty Images) There will be an English flavour to Friday's UEFA Champions League quarter-final draw in Nyon after Liverpool FC swelled the Premier League contingent to four by eliminating FC Internazionale Milano tonight. Two newcomers Liverpool, 3-0 aggregate winners, join Arsenal FC, Manchester United FC and Chelsea FC – respectively first, second and third in the English top flight – in the hat along with 2006 winners FC Barcelona, AS Roma and two newcomers to this stage, FC Schalke 04 and Fenerbahçe SK. Holders AC Milan have failed to make the quarter-finals for the first time in six seasons, while nine-time winners Real Madrid CF are other notable absentees having fallen to a Roma side who may want to avoid Manchester United having lost 7-1 at Old Trafford in the last eight last season. The draw is open and without country protection. Open draw The event at UEFA HQ begins from 13.00CET and will be conducted by UEFA General Secretary, David Taylor, together with the ambassador for the final in Moscow on 21 May, former Russia goalkeeper Rinat Dasaev. The quarter-final first legs will be played on 1/2 April and the return matches the following week. The four winning teams will know who they will meet in the semi-finals (taking place on 22/23 and 29/30 April) as those pairings will also be decided during Friday's draw ceremony. The final will be held at the Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow, on Wednesday 21 May at 20.45CET (22.45 local time). ©uefa.com 1998-2008. All rights reserved. --- Draw Predictions? I would like to see Roma MU one more time before it is all said and done.
What I want to see: Liverpool vs. Fenerbahce Manchester vs. Barcelona Arsenal vs. Shalke Chelsea vs. Roma What I think will happen: Arsenal vs. Liverpool Chelsea vs. Manchester Fenerbahce vs. Barcelona Roma vs. Shalke
It'll be interesting to see if the best CL quarterfinal game will be any better than the worst FA Cup quarterfinal match...
Btw: The English clubs have just marked a new CL record! Never before in the history of the CL did 4 teams from the same league reach the 1/4 finals! Congrats on this impressive performance!
I could be wrong but a quick guesstimation of probabilities would suggest one all English QF and two QF's with one English side each
Prem. vs Prem. QFs for all four would surely mark a rigged drawing, are the balls chosen by hand or machine?
That'd be really lame if all the english teams got paired up against each other this early. I'm thinking only 2 of the 4 will be paired together, atleast thats what I'm hoping. Who does everyone think will step it up for their team and be the star(s) of the quarter/semi finals?
I hope Man Utd draw Barca, that would be the tie i would most hope to see. other than that I predict: Man Utd v Barca Liverpool vs Chelsea Arsenal vs Fenerbache Shalke vs Roma in bold who i think would go threw in those ties.
as i said elsewhere, praying fro mu fenerbace, arsenal bara, chelsea roma and liverpool shalke. 4 epl semi final, with mu, chelsea and liverpool knocking up cricket scorelines.
^^^ A terrible post. Anyway, the odds of two matches involving all English teams aren't that long. Maybe 10:1. Doesn't mean it's fixed if that happens.
Approximate odds of 2 All-EPL Quaterfinals matchups: 7.14% Approximate odds of 1 All EPL Quarterfinals matchup: 67.46% Approximate odds of 0 All EPL Quarterfinals matchups: 25.40%
I can even give you the exact probabilities. I'm pretty curious to know what reasoning led you to these approximations. Odds of 2 All-EPL Quaterfinals matchups: 6/70 = 8.57% Odds of 1 All EPL Quarterfinals matchup: 48/70 = 68.57% Odds of 0 All EPL Quarterfinals matchups: 16/70 = 22.86%
Data entry error. I was dividing by 6 instead of 5 on the second matchup. For 2 All-EPL matchups: 1st matchup: 3/7 chance of EPL matched with EPL. 2nd matchup: 1/5 chance of EPL matched with EPL. Total: 3/35 = 8.57% For 1 All-EPL matchup: There are 3 different ways to make a single matchup... Part 1: 1st matchup: 3/7 chance of EPL matched with EPL. 2nd matchup: 4/5 chance of EPL NOT matched with EPL. Total: 34.29% Part 2: 1st matchup: 5/7 chance of EPL NOT matched with EPL. 2nd matchup: 2/5 chance of EPL matched with EPL. Total: 22.86% Part 3: 1st matchup: 5/7 chance of EPL NOT matched with EPL. 2nd matchup: 3/5 chance of EPL NOT matched with EPL. 3rd matchup: 1/3 chance of EPL matched with EPL. Total: 11.43% Grand Total: 68.57% For 0 All-EPL matchups: 1st matchup: 5/7 chance of EPL NOT matched with EPL. 2nd matchup: 3/5 chance of EPL NOT matched with EPL. 3rd matchup: 2/3 chance of EPL matched with EPL. Total: 22.86% Thanks for pointing out the mistake. (Note: These are still "approximate" due to rounding to 2 digits.)
I am hoping for MU vs Barcelona Arsenal vs Roma Chelsea vs Liverpool Fenerbahce vs Schalke this way every team is match with a team of its caliber
Please God no Chelsea-Liverpool QF. Talk about a sleep inducing tie for the neutral. There's guaranteed to be one all english QF and any tie that doesn't feature Chelsea-Liverpool together would be great.
What I want to see: Chelsea vs. Barcelona Arsenal vs. Man United Fenerbahce vs. Schalke Roma vs. Liverpool What I think will happen: Barcelona vs. Fenerbahce Man United vs. Schalke Chelsea vs. Roma Liverpool vs. Arsenal
