First, a little bit "on the street" reconnaissance courtesy of Honorable Yank Abroad Arteta's Girl. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=21543343&postcount=1156 Corroborated by William-Hill making Bob Bradley 4-1 odds of being named the coach, right below Matin Jol. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=21543516&postcount=364 http://sports.williamhill.com/bet/en-gb/betting/e/1018766/sp/Next-Aston-Villa-Manager.html
I thought the YA section was hoping to trend towards more "news" in their threads. Or was that specifically for Adu?
From Villa Talk: "Some moron on SSN has just suggested bob bradley to come in as MONs successor. WTF?????" That message board is still ridiculously slow right now so I haven't seen anything else yet.
That's what the William-Hill link is for. Those guys take their jobs seriously. I guess I can see where you're coming from though, I'm sure the mods will make a decision.
"Current Ajax manager is the current favourite to take over O’Neills place but there are rumours of USA coach Bob Bradley heading in for the role." http://www.freebetsblog.com/sport/next-permanent-aston-villa-manager-odds/ They have Bradley at 10/1.
Martin Jol has just turned down Fulham, I doubt he's coming to Aston Villa, even if it is a bigger club. I see Bob being appointed
Where did they even come up with Jol as a viable candidate for this job? Ajax just refused Fulham permission to talk to Jol less than 2 weeks ago. I doubt they are suddenly going to change their minds a few days before the start of the season. By the way I am down with a straight swap. AV can have Bradley if the USMNT can have O'Neill.
here's some odds from different sites: http://guardian.oddschecker.com/football/football-specials/aston-villa-specials
I agree Jol is doubtful, but if Villa were to offer more money to Ajax.... As for Bob getting the job, that would be a surefire way for Randy Lerner to make himself the most hated man in Birmingham (not a statement on Bob's skills as a manager, just a comment on the reaction that hiring him would lead to)...
when the next realistic option is Alan Curbishley, I think Bob has a very good chance, especially since Villa have to sold some of players recently. I mean, I doubt Oneill had tons of money to spend, and I bet that was a huge issue in this
My immediate reaction is that if O'Neill resigned due to money issues (which seems to be the case), then it is really unlikely that Lerner will pay what it takes to snatch Jol from Ajax. So IMO Jol is unlikely.
so can someone sum up why for real bob didn't get a look at Fulham First, let me say that I am a BIG Hughes fan so personally I understand grabbing him, great coach for mid level team... But the rumours were big and then it just died quick. Did it have to do with USSF? Furthermore what's to make people think that AV would take a chance on BB if Fulham didn't? Doesn't AV have larger aspirations in general as a club than Fulham? Thanks I really wish something like this would happen even though I'm sure it won't. I just know it won't, they'll hire someone else because they don't want to take the chance. such a pity
he has a similar style to Bradley's USA sides. Pair of central midfielders who have box-to-box roles, two dedicated attacking midfielders, strong striker, quick forward. direct attack. Perhaps that's a reason he'd make a good candidate. There wouldn't be much change.
also, Bruce Arena has been given multiple odds, the best being 14/1 it's all on the list a posted on the first page
no doubt he'd be a good appointment. But then again, so would Manuel Pellegrini, he'd have a long term plan that Lerner could really buy into
I think believing Lerner would hire Bob because they are both American is....well...kind of stupid. Bob is a fringe candidate, but no more so than many, many others. It would take a lot of folks turning down the job to get to Bob.
Pellegrini would require a lot of personell turnover so he could find players that fit his style/system. This close to the season, you have to find a coach who can manage the players already there, and a lot of that is going to have to do with the kind of system a manager tends to favor.
The only reason Bob and Bruce are even getting odds.......is that they're American. There's ZERO evidence of an interest yet from Villa in either one of them. I can't believe O'Neill left this close to the start of the season. Villa's money situation is no different now than it has been for years. Lerner isn't a Saudi oil tycoon or a Thai billionaire. Only a few teams in the prem are spending any money this off-season. Most teams are in the exact same position as Villa, or worse. So where's he going to go that has a better financial situation? By the way...........Sunil Gulati should be on a phone to O'Neill's agents ASAP to see if he's interested. He probably isn't but, what do you have to lose.
thats not why I'm saying it, although the Brits will definitely think that. Look the options with the best odds: Bradley Sven Curbishley Jol Klinsmann (wtf, this guy gets low odds for EVERY job lol) Slaven Bilic (where's the club experience?) John Collins (enlighten me) Gareth Southgate Lee Clark Redknap (gimme a break, how will he be able to buy Peter Crouch?) None of those are really appealing, and it's not like Villa have a lot of money to spend, even though their fans want a top 4 place
um, there's a lot of evidence that Villa are showing interest in the others right? Bruce gets odds because he's American. Bob's a real option
It wasn't because they are both American. That was simply just me linking things up. Apologies if people are misled by that comment. I was trying to write it out quick! It was more because I was told this by 2 different people that he was being heavily talked about as a replacement, and his odds are low, that is all.
Of those listed, Bradley is probably the least likely. John Collins is a former Scotland international. Managed Hibs and Charleroi............in other words doesn't have a coaching resume to suggest that he's a candidate for a top half prem club. You know......I can see Sven getting this job. He was actually doing a very good job at Man City before he was canned for meeting the unrealistic expectations of a Thai criminal.
Bilic and Curbishley are really good shouts for it, in my opinion. Curbishley especially as he is already out of a job.
