Played in another friendly in Round Rock, TX: http://www.mystatesman.com/news/spo...es-late-to-beat-leon-in-mexican-pro-so/nrwMm/
does he have any chance of getting that 3rd keeper spot for the next WC? Just curious what you guys who've watched him closely think? and what's with all the mexican friendlies in the US recently? didn't their league just finish like a month ago? Is Mexico doing all it can to promote the league or at least garner all the $$ from mexican Americans?
Leading Liga MX in both clean sheets and saves is no easy feat. He deserves to get more chances with the national team.
Not over Guzan or Howard (yet), but I'd say at this moment, Yarbrough should be seen as either on par or ahead of just about everyone else. Being one of the very best keepers in Liga MX speaks for itself, a league superior to the likes of MLS and Tippeligaen. Roderick MacNeil called Yarbrough "almost inarguably" the best Liga MX keeper for 2015-2016. Yarbrough was heavily tested in facing the most shots and making the most saves of any Liga MX keeper, a combo of stats often associated with a struggling club, yet he still led Leon to a third-place finish in spite of his club's shaky defense. To me, it's just odd that he was left off the Copa America Centenario preliminary roster with 5 other keepers chosen ahead of him, for a country that isn't exactly brimming with quality keepers entering their prime. Things can certainly change over the next two years, including for the worse, but if he keeps up the play he had last year then it will be hard to justify not calling him up. My early prediction as of today for who will go to Russia in 2018 (if Howard is not fit or retires by then) is Guzan, Yarbrough, and Horvath, though that could very well change.
why hasn'y Yarbrough gotten more chances with the NT specifically in early parts of this year when both Howard and Guzan were benched?
Generally, the Mexican goalkeeping is only slightly better than the Japanese goalkeeping. But the guy is approaching his prime and getting a lot of PT. How this projects to 2018, no one knows.
Because we only had two games before the Copa warmups that he was available for, and they were both World Cup qualifiers.
Club Leon is off to a very poor start. Yarbrough got 4 saves but Leon fell to Monterrey 3-0. (Ibarra was on the bench.) They're sitting in last place in the Apertura standings, just 1 point through 4 matches. Looks like they're having a lot of the same struggles they had last year, but Yarbrough hasn't been able to carry them or mask those weaknesses to the same degree he did so impressively last year.

From late Saturday:William Yarbrough made 4 saves in León's 2-0 win @ América; 2nd clean sheet of Apertura, Leon's 2nd straight win. #USMNT— Roderick MacNeil (@rodmacneil) September 18, 2016
Another win for Yarbrough and Leon, impressively over 2nd-place Tigres. Good to see him climb out of the basement to mid-table. He'd be deserving of a USMNT friendly call-up. William Yarbrough made 3 saves for León; Jose Torres started/played 56 min for Tigres. León wins 3-2, Tigres' 1st loss of Apertura. #USMNT— Roderick MacNeil (@rodmacneil) October 2, 2016
According to ESPN Deportes, Yarbrough got a double fracture in his right middle finger in the USMNT match vs. New Zealand. Though he'll continue playing for Leon, his finger does have pain and has a recovery time of up to 5 weeks, so he's not a likely call-up for the upcoming Hex matches. http://espndeportes.espn.com/futbol...803/william-yarbrough-esta-jugando-fracturado
Well, perhaps I was wrong: ESPN is now reporting Yarbrough will be called up to the USMNT for the upcoming Hex matches. (Certainly, take this report with a grain of salt.) It's also possible that he is in the provisional roster, not the final one (yet). I do think there is some value to having someone who knows the opponents around for training.
