Here are the main matches of the 1885-86 season in chronological order. Any details about missing goalscorers and best players from match reports would be appreciated. This is the first season of official professional football in England. However, the recently instigated rules of professionalism produce many farcical results in the FA Cup, as clubs are often unable to field their strongest sides. A special committee of the Scottish Football Association met in Glasgow on Thursday 10 September to consider the issue of professionalism. The meeting came out strongly in favour of Scottish football remaining amateur. There was also a substantial majority in favour of a bye-law preventing Scots clubs playing against professional sides. It would be important to know for which club the Corinthians players (the Walters brothers, Cobbold, Lindley) turned out in the FA Cup, if they played at all.
It is conceivable professional clubs, like Preston North End and Aston Villa could not use their strongest teams in the Birmingham Cup and Lancashire Cup either, because of the limitations set by the FA. It is interesting Queen’s Park avoided playing against professionals (Blackburn Rovers and Notts County had to play with an amateur team against them), yet in April they were ready to play the professional team of Preston North End.

Suggested best XI 1885-86 (2-3-5): McAuley - Arnott, Nick Ross - Bailey, Campbell, Forrest - Dewhurst, Joe Lindsay, Lindley, Cobbold, Bambridge.
Here are my suggestions for the nominees this season. 23 Man Shortlist Arnott, Walter SCO Queen's Park Arthur, Herbert ENG Blackburn Rovers Bailey, Norman ENG Clapham Rovers / did he play for Old Westminster in the FA Cup? Bambridge, Charles ENG Swifts Bayliss, James ENG West Bromwich Albion Brann, George ENG Swifts Brown, James ENG Blackburn Rovers Campbell, Charles SCO Queen's Park Cobbold, Nevill ENG Cambridge University / Old Carthusians Dewhurst, Fred ENG Preston North End Douglas, Jimmy SCO Blackburn Rovers Forrest, James ENG Blackburn Rovers Lindley, Tinsley ENG Cambridge University / did he play for Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup? Lindsay, Joseph SCO Dumbarton McAuley, James SCO Dumbarton McIntyre, Hugh SCO Blackburn Rovers Ross, Jimmy SCO Preston North End Ross, Nick SCO Preston North End Sellar, William SCO Battlefield Spilsbury, Benjamin ENG Cambridge University / did he play for Derby County in the FA Cup? Squire, Ralph ENG Cambridge University / did he play for Old Westminsters in the FA Cup? Suter, Fergus SCO Blackburn Rovers Walters, Percy ENG Oxford University / Old Carthusians Preston North End were reportedly unbeaten in more than 50 games until losing at Accrington in late April. Does it mean they did not play the Lancashire Cup, whose final was played in Preston at the start of April? Perhaps more players from Preston could be selected (I am thinking on Goodall, Howarth, but neither of them was capped by England), at the expense of players like Brann and Squire. Top3 1. Ross, Nick SCO Preston North End 2. Cobbold, Nevill ENG Cambridge University/Old Carthusians 3. Arnott, Walter SCO Queen's Park We have few detailed match reports, but Preston, captained by Nick Ross, twice beat Cobbold’s Corinthians this season. Team of the Season (2-3-5): McAuley - Arnott, Nick Ross - Bailey, Campbell, Forrest - Dewhurst, J Lindsay, Lindley, Cobbold, Bambridge.
Top 3 looks fine. In the FA Cup, Bailey and Squire both played in the 6-0 defeat by West Bromwich, whose reported goalscorers differ from your source - Woodhall 2, Loach 2, Bell, Bayliss. Spilsbury scored for Derby in their 3rd round defeat by Small Heath Alliance. Lindley was one of Nottingham Forest's better players in their defeat by Staveley on the same day. I would include AM Walters ahead of Brann or Squire. It does not look as though Preston entered the Lancashire Cup. They were very much a team. Three representatives from the club looks OK. Goodall was not yet the player he would become. Archie Hunter only played two games for Aston Villa this season.
Final results of the season. 23 Man Shortlist Arnott, Walter SCO Queen's Park Arthur, Herbert ENG Blackburn Rovers Bailey, Norman ENG Clapham Rovers / Old Westminster Bambridge, Charles ENG Swifts Bayliss, James ENG West Bromwich Albion Brann, George ENG Swifts Brown, James ENG Blackburn Rovers Campbell, Charles SCO Queen's Park Cobbold, Nevill ENG Cambridge University / Old Carthusians Dewhurst, Fred ENG Preston North End Douglas, Jimmy SCO Blackburn Rovers Forrest, James ENG Blackburn Rovers Lindley, Tinsley ENG Cambridge University / Nottingham Forest Lindsay, Joseph SCO Dumbarton McAuley, James SCO Dumbarton McIntyre, Hugh SCO Blackburn Rovers Ross, Jimmy SCO Preston North End Ross, Nick SCO Preston North End Sellar, William SCO Battlefield Spilsbury, Benjamin ENG Cambridge University / Derby County Suter, Fergus SCO Blackburn Rovers Walters, Arthur ENG Cambridge University / Old Carthusians Walters, Percy ENG Oxford University / Old Carthusians Top3 1. Arnott, Walter SCO Queen's Park Team of the Season (2-3-5): McAuley - Arnott, Nick Ross - Bailey, Campbell, Forrest - Dewhurst, J Lindsay, Lindley, Cobbold, Bambridge.
