We should try to cover this season as well, when the England vs Scotland internationals started, and the Kennington Oval became the central venue for football in London.

Charles Alcock secures the use of the Surrey County Cricket ground at Kennington Oval, London for his club, the Wanderers for this season. The Football Association now has access to a large enclosed venue capable of accommodating thousands of paying spectators. Clubs jump at the opportunity of using the new venue and soon it hosts games every week.
Clapham Rovers (2 wins) has a positive record against Wanderers this season. Wanderers shares matches with Crystal Palace and once beats Royal Engineers.
Sheffield teams were probably very strong, but did not play against teams from London.

The main matches of the season:

    Clapham Rovers-Wanderers 1-0, 25.9.1869, Clapham Common

At the end of January The Field announces ‘A match between the leading representatives of the Scotch and English sections at the Oval on Saturday the 19th February next, under the auspices of the Association.’ There are instructions for players to communicate with Charles Alcock or Robert Graham for English players, and to James Kirkpatrick or Arthur Kinnaird for the ‘Scotch’. These team selectors are all FA committee members, with Alcock about to take over from Graham as the Association’s secretary; Kirkpatrick and Kinnaird, although born in Canada and London respectively, came from Scottish families and were among the game’s leading players.
