He was a soccer legend in every way that mattered. Most people only remember what he did for the Galaxy and in this league, but his legacy for soccer in the United States goes so much farther than that. First in Southern California circles, being recognized as one of the first players to play in the AYSO and then be honored as Pioneer of AYSO. Sigi was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2015, also won three NCAA championships in 19 years at UCLA, his alma mater, coaching the Bruins to a 322-63-33 record and 16 consecutive playoff appearances. Then with the Galaxy Sigi took over and we finished with the second-best record in the league and won their conference. He earned the Coach of the Year, and Robin Fraser MLS defender of the year which he gave credit to Schmid. Sigi went on to be part of many firsts for this club, MLS Cup, US Open Cup, CONCACAF Champions, Supporters Shield, and most points in a season. He coached and brought us players like Cobi Jones, Greg Vanney,Carlos Ruiz, Kevin Hartman, Danny Califf, Alexis Lalas, and the Jamaican Knife Tyrone Marshall. Even after we let him go (at the right time), he went on to WIN everywhere he went, and as we know the winningest coach in league history. He came back to us to save us from our own FO, not because of money, but unfinished business. His time with us did not end the way we or he hoped, but I never doubted his HEART. Unlike many people in sports now (or in our FO), the club mattered to him. On a day that we hire a new coach (GBS), a player he coached and led to MLS Cup. I hope that he (GBS) can build success in the way his former gaffer did, and build his own legacy here. I appreciate Sigi for what he did for LA Galaxy, he built the bottom of the pyramid that our clubs success and legacy were built on. Big Sig was an LA Galaxy LEGEND!! Our team should honor his accomplishments.
I saw this picture posted on Reddit and I thought it was a pretty poignant picture of the Galaxies past and its future together as one. RIP Sigi, you lived a memorable and fulfilling life, you will be missed by all who were touched by your career and all your accomplishments
Sigi Schmid and his coaching career are defined by far more than his MLS wins record https://theathletic.com/735031/2018...defined-by-far-more-than-his-mls-wins-record/ https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018...time-winningest-mls-head-coach-passes-away-65
Thank you for posting the link to the athletic. Combined with the comments, it was one of the best obits I have read, even though it ignored his Galaxy stints.
Sigi Schmid might have owed everything to soccer, but it was a debt he paid in full http://www.latimes.com/sports/soccer/la-sp-soccer-baxter-20181229-story.html
