That’s an interesting piece, but it’s using the wrong metrics. Most glaringly, it should have looked at the shots on target that a goalkeeper has faced, rather than the total number of shots. Goalkeepers can’t save shots that are blocked or are off-target. Secondly, it should have looked at the xG of the shots in question, in order to take into account the quality of the chances that a goalkeeper has faced. In recent seasons, while we’ve conceded a low number of chances, the quality of those chances has tended to be high. Obviously, that has far more to do with the outfield players than with whoever’s in goal for us. This isn’t a defence of Mignolet, by the way – the SoT and xG stats could well be even more damning than those presented in the article.
