A tactically-enjoyable clash between Mauricio Pochettino vs Roger Schmidt.

In the initial press, Pocchetino always wants his boys to press as high as possible and force the opposite-goalkeeper or the opponent’s first-liners to play a lot of uncomfortable long balls. Against Leverkusen this pressing-style became more logical as Schmidt’s boys are not recognized to be a good side at playing from the back. By pressing them high, the opponent would have definitely forced Leverkusen to launch a number of long balls, with Spurs making a lot of recoveries and regaining possession.

Sounds good, doesn’t it? Yes, but, not!

Schmidt, for sure, had realized he would have had to face such a pattern of pressing. Thus what Schmidt did was something he has been well-known for. Spurs wanted him to play it long, then Schmidt said yes to the invitation. In responding to this kind of press, Schmidt played something calls zugriffserzeugend or generating-access by winning the second-balls by forcing the opponent into transitional-phase. That's why such play can be named by transitional-focused play. This was how Schmidt created a gegenpressing situation.

The head-coach asked his troops to play it long on their goal kicks or other possible long ball situations. And, guess what? Die Werkself managed to gain a lot of second-balls from their long ball plays. Leverkusen earned no less than 17 recoveries or advantage-situations from such play. Schmidt’s purposely long ball worked well this time.

But, not only great at playing the transitional-phase, Schmidt's boys also played their settled-press very-well. This image below was one of the scene and the scheme as-well of how Leverkusen applied their pressing-play.

As Baumgartlinger moved high to press Dembele who dropped-deep to Tottenham's 6, Kampl, the near-winger adjusted his position by moving into the middle-line on the same line with the 8 layer. By moving deeper and narrower, Kampl maintained his defensicve-access to the center area. By moving deeper, he had provided adequate cover to the vacated-space.
