Congratulations Zips. Creighton still has never beaten you. And you played your way off the bubble and into the at-large field. Just don’t play your way back on!

It was a bit nervy at times, but a relatively solid win. Most importantly, they went to a 5-4-1 when it got late.

I'm curious as to whether the Creighton kid who drilled the ref with a shot after the final whistle really meant it, or said something to the ref, or what, because that red seemed pretty harsh from up in the stands.

No way that Creighton kid intentionally shot it at the ref. Not a chance. Even if that ref did deserve it. Rarely do I ever call out a referee. But once I get this guy's name, I will tell you all how much he sucks. He called an extremely inconsistent game, was ambiguous with his directions, and generally failed to keep pace with the action. Very noticeably poor refereeing. I did not recognize the ref at all. I do not care about his credentials, nor about his resume. But I know bad when I see it.

It was interesting, because just about all the calls that the people around me in the expensive seats (first time at a non-spring game) complained about, he got right. But he wasn't great otherwise. Should have issued a yellow to the Creighton left back in the first half who very, very deliberately handled the ball on the ground when he got skinned by...was it Cole?...even though it ended up in a very good chance for Akron. I mean, that was really bad.

    Akron 1-0 Creighton

Very evenly matched contest between two stylistically similar sides. I was fearful leading up to this match. Actually kind of glad it is over.

Marcel Zajac is rounding back in form, recovering from a toe broken in August. He had a fine outing.

Carlo Ritaccio is growing up right before our eyes. He played like a MAN tonight. Probably his best match as a Zip.

Blue Jays #10 can play for me anytime.

    He was quite good.

    This guy was excellent.

    #2 was handy as well.

Answer me this: when Embick finally dropped an extra center back in, how in the world did the Zips still not have enough width to prevent the 50 yard switches to Abdi Mohammed's side?

    Northern Illinois 2-1 Akron

Deplorable! This Zips squad is psychologically weak.

What the hell is going on that you can beat #10 when you're having a shitty year, but not take care of an otherwise pretty poor NIU, in the same week?

Compounding Akron's frustration is the same season they had their worst team in years is that the MAC went and got pretty damn good this year.

There are currently 5 MAC teams in the top 50 of the RPI:

    24. West Virginia
    39. SIU-Edwardsville
    41. Akron
    42. Northern Illinois
    49. Western Michigan

The one exception is Bowling Green, currently 125, but they are 1-0-2 in the MAC and in second place.

So Akron can't count on those cakewalk conference wins like they could most of the Porter/Embick eras.

"I thought we had a decent first half and missed some opportunities to go up by two," Akron head coach Jared Embick commented. "In the second half, we just didn't compete at the level we need to. Our effort and play is unacceptable. We lost too many 50-50 battles, passed the ball poorly and didn't support play well. I have to find a way to get the team to be more consistent, we are capable of better."

I do not disagree with any of your above post.

It is still far better to play in a conference that is worth playing than it is to count on those cakewalk wins.

Are eight teams required for quarterfinals to even exist? Can there be quarterfinals with only six teams?

I say it's the 1st round, regardless of what the conference or school calls it.
