I'm glad to see DeOliveria still out there. It seems like PRO has been hitting on people having too low a threshold on VAR reviews, so it makes no sense for them to meanwhile bench Marcos for having too high a threshold.

I'm for giving people chances to learn, but I strongly disagree with your rationale here for allowing him back. Both incidents he was involved with he not only was informed of a potential clear and obvious error (that PRO agreed with the VAR), but he ignored the VAR referee. Shows he either doesn't know how to be a part of a team, and/or that he has too much of an ego to admit a mistake, something that isn't congruent with a VAR world.

I hope he does well with his new assignments and has learned from his past mistakes. Time will tell.

Dopka sees his first MLS action (that I know of) and a fairly young crew in Toronto.

Yep. First MLS assignments for him and Sergii Demianchuk. 2nd for Pierre-Luc Lauzierre after a gap of 3 years or so.

Call me crazy, but putting Demianchuk, on his first match ever, as FO with Porter given this week may not be the most strategic appointment.

Maybe it's because he owed us a goal from last year's NYRB game (when he missed in real time and Gieger failed to suggest review on BWP throwing himself to the ground to "earn" a PK), but I thought Penso did a great job of very quickly making the right decision in the ATL v. Toronto game and giving a card for diving to Ossorio. Sitting 60 yards away, I was sure we'd given up a PK.

It’s awful and embarrassing. PRO’s media affairs team should have never let this happen like this.

was there just not a definitive enough camera angle to show Zlatan choking Johnson?

    RSL v COL
No clips yet as match is going on - Sibiga using VAR for two key incidents so far in the first 35 minutes
    (1) VAR used to award a PK for RSL in the 26th min
    (2) VAR used to downgrade a red to yellow against RSL in the 35th min or so

Either I really don't understand the "clear and obvious error" standard or the officials don't. The red card certainly didn't look improper to me. That was a pretty "orange" card type of challenge.

    Disclaimer: Rapids fan here.

But I agree, didn't seem clear and obvious to me.

That tackle was very low. It’s not a red at this level. At speed, you can see why the red is given. But that’s a good use of VAR.

I’m actually a bit more surprised the penalty was given. It’s definitely a justifiable foul. I just don’t know if it meets the clearly wrong threshold established so far this year.

MLS now has a Twitter bot that spits out the reason for the reviews and the final decision. @MLSVAR

Given the standards at this level, yes. No MLS referee would look at that clip on video and say “red.”

This is different than, say, the Larentowicz tackle in Atlanta last year. That was defensible and more borderline, despite what PRO ultimately said.

OK then. I've always had a problem with that line of thinking (dangerous fouling is allowed in pro leagues that's not allowed anywhere else), but if that's the way it's supposed to be... I probably need to stop watching. :)

    But what makes it “dangerous?”

It’s reckless. It’s a very low point of contact. It’s one leg. It’s not straight. There’s really nothing here that ticks the box for red other than speed.

is the speed not enough to make it dangerous? His leg looks pretty straight to me at the point of contact

VAR got a workout tonight in Colorado. Two PKs, a red rescinded, and a goal disallowed. The Rapids were on the wrong side of the call 3 times but I didn’t see anything from the stands that was obviously wrong with the decisions. My fellow fans weren’t so generous.

The main point of complaint is the non-red card, saying that its 100% a red card because the studs were up (other fans, not me, saying that).
