Los Angeles Football Club defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 on Thursday in the 2019 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16, and they know who they’ll face in the next round, a familiar foe. They will host the Portland Timbers in the quarterfinal round at Banc of California Stadium on Wednesday, July 10. The game will be the latest between the teams, who have met five times to date in competitive matches, with LAFC winning three, Portland winning one and the teams tying once. This season, LAFC have beaten the Timbers twice in league play, including a 3-2 barnburner in Portland earlier this month

Wednesday, July 10 - vs. Portland Timbers (U.S. Open Cup) Here’s the first headline game of the month (there are arguably three). LAFC and the Timbers meet in the quarterfinals of the Open Cup, after meeting in the quarterfinals of the Open Cup last year, a game that was marred by a racial slur and subsequent bizarre response from the offending team, an official petition filed to try and vacate LAFC’s win (the ruling came out in LAFC’s favor, because U.S. Soccer screwed up) and a back-and-forth win. Given how feisty things were between these teams on June 1 for the Timbers’ home opener, expect more of the same here. That it’s an elimination game and both teams clearly seem to be going for the USOC ratchets the tension up even more. This will either be brilliant or the absolute worst. Either way, it will be a must-watch occasion.
The battle continues. Join us July 10 as we face @TimbersFC with a spot in the @opencup semifinals on the line. 🎟️ https://t.co/3xzAHMvax0 pic.twitter.com/PNz8OlZfJh— LAFC (@LAFC) July 5, 2019
