This crossed my mind as well, and it got me wondering what makes a good goalkeeper? First and foremost the elite goal keepers all seem to be long-limbed, but what are the other qualities that make great keepers? Perhaps glove stinks or any other poster with knowledge of the position would care to comment.
That is a broad question First of all size is basically over rated. Sure a 6 foot gk looks intimidating but are useless without knowledge and skill set On the same note a smaller keeper with agility and skill can make a big impact (see MK from South Carolina) That said, quality goal keeping relies on technique, speed, explosiveness, and the ability to read the game GK Trainers can take a 30 second look in a warm up and typically tell what they have to work with by watching how a keeper sets and explodes on low balls to the corners. All of that said it’s a head scratcher when I see D1 college teams carry only 2 keepers. Two years ago Kentucky had to play the last 4-5 games with a field player in goal. That is an impossible task
Thanks for the reply. It makes sense that size is overrated, but it seems like to top tier in the world are tall. As for the number of keepers on a roster, I do not remember the last time FSU had more than two in a single season,
Thanks Glove Stinks. As you know, I am hugely impressed with that keeper from USCw. Great instincts and athleticism. The keeper from UNC, Leshnak, really impressed me with her explosiveness in that PK shootout with UCLA. I'm no expert though. Though some disagree, I really like Brooke's potential going forward.
To the height point, if keeper A and keeper B have the same other skills, you're going to take the taller one. And that's why you see so many taller keepers. Being tall just makes reaching certain shots and crosses easier. Especially when there's a lot of commotion in front of the goal. I definitely like Brooke's potential. Two more things I like in a keeper are fearlessness and a willingness to come off her line, which is one critique I had on both of FSU's keepers this year.
I actually thought Brooke came off her line much more than we were used to. I thought CJ got a little tentative in the UNC game with the corners. I think there was 1 or 2 times she could have got the ball. Better safe than sorry and it worked out!
Instinct/fearlessness is a huge factor but I consider a given at this level. A kid wouldn’t get there without it. Some are better than others. Same with feet on the ball but there can be huge disparities there. You guys are in great shape with B.B. but Mark is playing with fire having only 2 on the roster. If he had to play a field player in goal in the tournament they would have been done It’s a difficult managing job to have more than two or three for game playing time but impossible to practice without. I guarantee those last 3 weeks CJ was exhausted from the practice reps
I think Bristol (GK coach) plays keeper in practice, and like I said above I do not recall an FSU team to ever have more than 2 keepers on the roster.
Recall way back when they had 3 in one recruiting cycle: Kerry York, Ali Mims and Joy McKenzie. I think, from some injury issues to get to the 6 years, each ended up playing like 2 full seasons as the starter. Each one was extremely good, and those teams really helped to build our program to what it is today.
USFSU knows his/her stuff Help me out here. We have 7 seniors, 8 if you count Jeffers. I know of 6 recruits for 19. Alexandra Kalayjian a 3 star defender out of NY Leilanni Nesbeth unrated F out of Bahamas?England Jenna NIghswonger #9 ranked MF out of Cali Taylor Radecki 3 star defender out Jax Bartram Trail Paige LaBerge no rating F out of New Hampshire I'm really hoping and expect at least 1 GK transfer probably. Maybe a stud forward will transfer. We need a couple more bodies.
So here are my starters next year with DC coming back. GK BB FBs Carle and Pavlisko CBs Madril and Berkely HMFer duhhh? My favorite player Jaelin Howell WMFers Nesbeth and Villalobos AMFer Zhao Forwards Castellanos and NIghswonger Key Bench players Patten, Lynch, B Dorosy, ?Thomas?, Robbins
Duhh I forgot McFarland as key bench player. That's pretty good depth. Now if Mark hits home runs on these freshmen, especially the unknowns, LaBerge, Radecki, Kalayjian; then all bets are off.
Possibly, Carle is an enigma to me, sometimes she looks really fast, other times not. I cannot decide if she is fast enough to be a solid outside defender, because she seemed to be routinely picked on by other teams and beat.
I think she is definitely faster than AP. That's why I have her still at FB. She can defend, and can be dangerous in attack.
Carrying on the conversation Tom81 says he's going to bring over to this thread about Top Drawer Soccer: Tom81, if you're using TDS as your source of information about player quality, it's all on you. TDS is a very poor source of information. Sadly, our old source CBG is gone. Now, the best source I know of is Soccerhunter with his annual assessments of incoming frosh. But TDS ... NOT!
Does he have a site? Does anyone know if Jordyn Huitema, Canadian sensation is going pro or to college? If to college, where? BTW, my TDS info is on 2018 FSU thread, not this one.
Nighswonger and Nesbeth are legit. Even if the rest are duds and transfer those two will be impact players. Nighswonger is a winner and Nesbeth has her eyes on playing for England eventually.
My feelings as well having seen limited highlights of those two. As to the other three, Mark rarely whiffs on 3 out of 5 in a class. Lynch and Pavlisko were not highly ranked coming into the year.
It was my foreign language in college. The professor used to work as a translator for the state department during the Cold War. He was Hungarian and spoke English, Turkish, Uzbek, Kazakh, Azerbajiani, Russian and Arabic among 10 of the languages that he spoke. He was awesome.
