It has been pretty consistent: 2008-2009 through 2013-14 (six tournaments): (1) MLS Cup winner, (2) Supporter Shield winner, (3) MLS Cup runner-up, (4) Open Cup winner 2014-15 through 2018 (four tournaments): (1) MLS Cup winner, (2) Supporter Shield winner, (3) opposite conference winner, (4) Open Cup winner 2019: (1) 2017 and (2) 2018 MLS Cup winners, (3) 2017 and (4) 2018 Open Cup winners. NOTE: That was the plan. They wound up doing it as (1) 2018 MLS Cup winner, (2) 2017 US Open Cup winner, (3) 2018 US Open Cup winner, (4) best on the combined 2017-18 Shield table after Toronto won the 2017 MLS Cup. 2020: back to the prior system. The 2019 tournament was the only real outlier with the calendar correction. The change in 2014 just swapped the MLS Cup loser for the regular season opposite conference winner. 3 of the 4 slots have been the same for 11 of the 12 tournaments where the US got 4 entrants. It might look more chaotic since there are often multiple trophy winners so hand-me-down selections are made.
Results from last night (advancing teams in bold): CA Independiente (PAN) 2-1 SV Robinhood (SUR) -- Great effort by Robinhood AD San Carlos (CRC) 0(4)-0(2) Santa Tecla FC (SLV) -- FC Motagua (HON) 2-1 Managua FC (NCA) -- Hondurans advance, closer than expected
So if Atlanta wins the Eastern Conference regular season, then the USA4 slot would then go to the next available EC team, not the overall standings or USOC finalist?
No. Any hand-me-down slot goes to the Shield table overall. It is not necessarily an Eastern conference team.
Although it's looking increasingly like it will be from the Eastern conference if the numbers stay about the same...either Philly or NYC.

Yes. As long as the regular season, MLS Cup, and U.S. Open Cup qualify clubs, there's no way to guarantee that a club won't win more than one.

Yeah I'm surprised too... Was expecting all three CRC teams to make it to the QFs, along with all three HON teams. (Independiente in the 7ths slot and a toss-up in the 8th). Well, I guess you should always expect an upset or two.
I don't like that three series will have both games at 10:00 P.M. I'm surprised that a game in Jamaica would start that late, but that's when Concacaf says.
That's 9 pm in Jamaica. It's on Eastern Standard Time year-round, no daylight savings. The other 10 pm games are 8 pm in most of Central America, 9 pm in Panama.
Aside from Atlanta United that won the USOC, LAFC just clinched the Western conference thus making them the 2nd MLS team in CCL. The West is ours.#LAFC pic.twitter.com/2lrERDUG07— LAFC (@LAFC) September 12, 2019

LAFC officially won the Supporter's Shield last night...that doesn't change anything does it? So far the qualified teams are LAFC and Atlanta from the US; assuming NYCFC wins the East they will have a spot, so it seems barring any major upsets in the playoffs one of either Minnesota or Philadelphia (and to a lesser degree LA Galaxy) will qualify for the last spot as the next in line in the Supporter's Shield standings?

You are correct. Nothing really changed. As of now the spots are: USA1: MLS Cup winner: TBD USA2: Supporter Shield winner: LAFC USA3: Best Eastern Conference record: NYCFC tentative USA4: U.S. Open Cup winner: Atlanta The overall Shield table looks like this as of 9/26/19: 1. LAFC 68 pts 2. NYCFC 61 pts 3. Philadelphia 55 pts 4. Atlanta 54 pts 5. Minnesota 52 pts 6. LA Galaxy 51 pts 7. Seattle 50 pts Let's assume NYCFC holds on to the Eastern spot. If they, LAFC, or Atlanta wins MLS Cup then at the moment Philly gets whichever spot that team vacates. Minnesota, LAG, or Seattle could move up to that position. If anyone else wins MLS Cup then there are no hand-me-down spots. Realistically Philly is in a pretty good spot. If they stay in 3rd or 4th spot then they would qualify if any of the other top three win MLS Cup. Or they could win it themselves.
And tangentially related...apparently the top four teams in each conference that aren't going to the CCL will qualify for the Leagues Cup next year with Liga MX, so there should at least be something on the line for the mid-tier teams to play for these last couple weeks.
I was thinking about that last night. It is probably not motivation but it is something. Right now it looks like those teams would be: EAST 4. DC United 5. NY Red Bulls 6. Toronto 7. New England WEST 2. Minnesota 3. LA Galaxy 4. Seattle 5. RSL Obviously that will change especially if one of them wins MLS Cup. And there may be other factors.
