A team from Suriname advancing! Off topic I know, but I wonder why their national team isn't as successful as Curacao's (with both being former Dutch colonies).
Likely because, technically, Curacao isn't a former. It's still part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (along with Aruba, Bonaire, and St. Maartens) and has easier access to Dutch education and I assume jobs as well.
I wonder if they have fewer eligible players in the Dutch development system due to their independent status. The Curacao team is mostly guys who were born in European Netherlands but still have a claim on Curacao eligibility. Suriname became independent in 1975. I'm sure there are players in the Netherlands of Surinamese descent but they may not have Suriname citizenship. I looked at the national team lineups. Most of the Curacao team plays for European teams plus a few scattered around the world and only three playing in Curacao. Suriname only has two guys in the Dutch league and a couple more in other European leagues. The rest play in the Suriname league and 1 in Jamaica.
Ahh that would probably explain it, thanks guys; apparently I need to brush up on my Dutch colonization and independence history. This also begs the question though, why can Curucao qualify for a World Cup while French Guiana can't? In other news, is there any point in trying to win this CONCACAF League when the top 6 teams make into the Champions League proper anyways? Looks like to me you just need to aim for the semifinals with the best goal differential you can manage.
The parent country FA has to give permission for dependencies to get into FIFA. The Dutch follow the US and British in allowing their possessions to form independent FAs and join FIFA. France does not. They consider their Caribbean (and other) possessions to be an integral part of the nation. French Guiana is more like Hawaii than Puerto Rico in status. Not much other than a title. Eventually there could be a seeding advantage or something like that but for now it looks to be just a trophy.
It's sort of that. There are a shitload of Dutch players who would be eligible for Suriname - there are 19 Dutch players worth €3 million or more on Transfermarkt that could theoretically play for Suriname, including van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Promes, and Justin Kluivert. The issue is that Suriname very aggressively prohibits dual citizenship, so in order to receive Surinamese citizenship and play for the national team, all of those players would have to relinquish their Dutch/EU citizenship, which would be insane.
I didn't know that and that makes sense now. Here is a video, although it is in Spanish, of the team that could be Surinam. I'll say they could have even competed in CONMEBOL.

Do the Semifinals and Final prepare clubs for harder competition in the Champions League? It's like what I said about the Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF qualifying clubs for the Champions Cup. UNCAF got 3 of the 8 Champions Cup spots, so I said that the third place aggregate of the Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF (which had 16 clubs with the same format as the Champions League has now) was more important than the Final aggregate. The Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF was abolished when the Champions Cup became the Champions League.
How many more points does LAFC need to say that they are in the clear to take the SS and get a CCL spot? About 17 points more out of the 30 possible left for them?
LAFC just needs to win the West regular season point total to guarantee a CCL spot. Seattle has a maximum possible of 69 points so LAFC needs 15 points to mathematically clinch. Seattle (or any other team) won't actually get 30 more points, 20 is a more reasonable number, so in actuality LAFC probably just needs 5 or 6 more points.

TUDN is showing Herediano - Waterhouse... 1) It looks hot and miserable in Kingston. 2) The stands look totally empty. 3) There's an annoying clanking sound coming from somewhere...like Marley's Ghost was wandering the near sideline.
What don't you like about them? What (in a general sense, not needing to work out every detail) would you like to see instead?
The idea that a team can win the whole thing and then that rankings boost is applied to someone else next year instead of that specific team is beyond stupid. How about a ranking for teams instead of slots?
Teams get seeded based on the past performance of their "slot". This meant that in last year's CCL, USA2 was in the lower pot, seeded below the supposedly less prestigious USA3 and USA4 qualifiers. Kansas City's semifinal run moved USA2 back into Pot 1 for 2020, so all four USA slots are in the Pot 1 this time, but USA1 and USA2 are the lowest-ranked slots in Pot 1, both at risk of falling into Pot 2 for the future. If USA1 falls into Pot 2, that would mean it would be better for CCL seeding for a team not to win MLS Cup. If USA2 goes to Pot 2, it would be better to be the "other conference winner" than to be the Supporters Shield winner. One better proposal would be to rank all of the qualified teams based on their past performance as individual clubs. New teams (or teams that haven't been there for 5+ years) would be the lowest ranked. If this means CONCACAF League qualifiers are in Pot 1 and MEX/USA teams in Pot 2, so be it. Another idea would be that if any of the USA slots fall to Pot 2, it is USA4, as the least-prestigious USA qualifier, that is actually placed in Pot 2.
Having coefficients that are tied to slots is meant to give a general indication as to how well teams from certain countries (or regions) perform over time. This is useful for seeding in a general sense and can presumably be used over time as a way of evaluating whether countries have reasonable representation. Given that different teams contest the tournament each year, it would be pretty difficult to award rankings for teams. An objectively weaker team that dominates its national league would get a lot of appearances and hence a lot of ranking points. It would be ranked higher than an objectively much stronger LMX team that only makes the CCL occasionally. The best we could realistically do is estimate where a team might rank based on how other teams from its nation perform over time. Which is the system we have.
Utter garbage. Aim higher. UEFA's club ranking system is massively superior. CONMEBOL's ranking system is massively superior.
Unless you can defend your points, don't be contrarian for the sake of it. Considering that MLS and LMX have a much higher level of parity than almost any other leagues around the world - almost all of which are incredibly top-heavy - the slot-based ranking does made more sense, for the reasons Kingston stated above - or at least the pros and cons of it outweigh the pros and cons of UEFA's system.
So you'd have no problem with Saprissa winning the whole thing and then starting in the preliminary round the next year while two brand new Costa Rican teams that have never qualified before got byes?
