The Dynamo are back in this tournament so I'm starting a thread specific for this year's tournament. The CCL, in its current iteration, is an home-and-away knockout tournament with 16 teams. Teams that have qualified so far: MEX1: UANL Tigres (2017 Apertura winner) MEX2: Santos Laguna (2018 Clausura winner) MEX3: Monterrey (2017 Apertura runner-up) MEX4: Toluca (2018 Clausura runner-up) USA1: Best MLS league record 2017-2018 (ATL currently leading) USA2: 2018 MLS Cup winner USA3: Sporting Kansas City (2017 U.S. Open Cup) USA4: Houston Dynamo (2018 U.S. Open Cup) CAN1: Toronto FC (2018 Canadian Champion) CRC1: Saprissa (2018 Clausura winner w/ better aggregate record) SLV1: Alianza (2017 Apertura & 2018 Clausura winner) GUA1: CD Guastatoya (playoff winner) HON1: Marathon (2018 Clausura winner w/ better aggregate record) PAN1: Independiente (2018 Clausura winner w/ better aggregate record) CFU1: Atletico Pantoja (DOM) (2018 Caribbean Club Champion) CL: 2018 CONCACAF League winner The draw will be in December. As the pots are currently organized the Dynamo would be Pot 1 but we'll see what happens once all of the USA teams are determined. The 2018 schedule looked like this. It should be similar in 2019. Round of 16: February 20–22, 2018; February 27 – March 1, 2018 Quarter-finals: March 6–7, 2018; March 13–14, 2018 Semi-finals: April 3–4, 2018; April 10, 2018 Finals: April 17, 2018; April 25, 2018
Atlanta United has claimed a spot. Only two more to determine. Teams that have qualified so far: MEX1: UANL Tigres (2017 Apertura winner) MEX2: Santos Laguna (2018 Clausura winner) MEX3: Monterrey (2017 Apertura runner-up) MEX4: Toluca (2018 Clausura runner-up) USA1: Atlanta United (Best MLS league record 2017-2018) USA2: 2018 MLS Cup winner USA3: Sporting Kansas City (2017 U.S. Open Cup) USA4: Houston Dynamo (2018 U.S. Open Cup) CAN1: Toronto FC (2018 Canadian Champion) CRC1: Saprissa (2018 Clausura winner w/ better aggregate record) SLV1: Alianza (2017 Apertura & 2018 Clausura winner) GUA1: CD Guastatoya (playoff winner) HON1: Marathon (2018 Clausura winner w/ better aggregate record) PAN1: Independiente (2018 Clausura winner w/ better aggregate record) CFU1: Atletico Pantoja (DOM) (2018 Caribbean Club Champion) CL: 2018 CONCACAF League winner
Herediano claims the CL spot. Only MLS Cup left to fill out the field. Teams that have qualified so far: MEX1: UANL Tigres (2017 Apertura winner) MEX2: Santos Laguna (2018 Clausura winner) MEX3: Monterrey (2017 Apertura runner-up) MEX4: Toluca (2018 Clausura runner-up) USA1: Atlanta United (Best MLS league record 2017-2018) USA2: 2018 MLS Cup winner USA3: Sporting Kansas City (2017 U.S. Open Cup) USA4: Houston Dynamo (2018 U.S. Open Cup) CAN1: Toronto FC (2018 Canadian Champion) CRC1: Saprissa (2018 Clausura winner w/ better aggregate record) SLV1: Alianza (2017 Apertura & 2018 Clausura winner) GUA1: CD Guastatoya (playoff winner) HON1: Marathon (2018 Clausura winner w/ better aggregate record) PAN1: Independiente (2018 Clausura winner w/ better aggregate record) CFU1: Atletico Pantoja (DOM) (2018 Caribbean Club Champion) CL: Herediano (CRC) (2018 CONCACAF League Champion)
The final USA team for 2019 is down to Portland or NY Red Bulls. If Kansas City or Atlanta (who have each already qualified) win the 2018 MLS Cup that will put the Red Bulls in as the next best on the combined 2017-18 table. The seeding could be affected but we may yet see changes in that before the December draw so that has some uncertainty.
The 2019 CCL draw will be on December 3 https://www.houstondynamo.com/post/...f-champions-league-draw-take-place-december-3 This article is a little vague about which USA teams are in which slot. Part of that is obviously because the MLS Cup winner won't be known and there can be some shifting around if Atlanta or Kansas City wins the Cup. Houston is probably USA 4 but that is not guaranteed since the USSF has never specifically said that.
Ah yes. that is what I meant. IIRC we are currently supposed to be USA4 which is the source of my misstatement.
According to the updated Wikipedia link https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_CONCACAF_Champions_League This is going to be rigged. The League is going to favor the “stronger clubs” like Atlanta, Kansas City, and either New York or Portland to be in one pot while our club will be put in the other pot. Wtf, smh. :/ :\
Some clarification from CONCACAF on the USA slots for the CCL. This is different than the scenarios that we believed were happening. https://www.concacafchampionsleague...-concacaf-champions-league-spot?sf203273971=1 From the article: If Atlanta wins the MLS Cup then: USA1: Atlanta (2018 MLS Cup champion) USA2: Kansas City (2017 U.S. Open Cup winner) USA3: Houston (2018 U.S. Open Cup winner) USA4: NY Red Bulls (next best on the combined 2017-18 table) If Portland wins the MLS Cup then: USA1: Portland (2018 MLS Cup champion) USA2: Kansas City (2017 U.S. Open Cup winner) USA3: Houston (2018 U.S. Open Cup winner) USA4: Atlanta (best on the combined 2017-18 table) This seems to indicate that Kansas City is locked into the USA2 slot. This article doesn't confirm it but that slot should be in Pot B for the upcoming draw.
CONCACAF just released an image with the pots for tonight's draw. Houston is in Pot 1 with the Mexican teams.
YES! hopefully get a Central American or Caribbean team not named Saprissa in the R16 and a MLS team in the quarterfinals. i would be more than OK with losing in the semis. heck, i'm OK with a quarterfinals loss.
We got Guastatoya of Guatemala in the first round. You don’t want to know who we would face in the quarters if we make it.

I have such found memories of mid-week football! So glad to have our team back in CCL competition If both us and Tigres advance in the bracket, a home clash with Tigres would actually be a sight to see at BBVA. Their is an avenue via the supporter and hincha culture here in Houston with Tigres and our solid supporter and hincha culture with our two groups that a wonderful atmosphere can be obtained. For many of us know others from Tigres and vice versa. If our FO is forward thinking than from walk out (recibimiento en espanol) to the play on the field and safety for all involved, our FO can display a complete association football atmosphere. Showing on TV specifically for those tuning in that our city is a true football type of town. Knowing full well how to celebrate the beautiful game. Basically, after hosting our city's first Cup Final, our club can grow the home game day atmosphere. Starting in February with this CCL first leg.
Wake up folks. We need to get past the Guastatoya team first. We have a fine history of getting beaten by fish in this competition. Now...if we do advance I don't care which team we play. I want to beat either, but it would be nice to get some revenge on Saprissa for games in the past.
I don’t recall it that way. The Dynamo have mostly been eliminated by Liga MX teams (Pachuca, Atlante, Santos) and Saprissa. There ain’t no shame in that.
Getting beat by Barney's cousin always bothered me. No...more like how we lost that series still bothers me. I say we do what we should and beat the Guatemalan team and get our vengeance upon Barney. Or get thumped by Tigres. Whichever.
