Interesting name: she's obvioulsy of Italian descent, but her parents (intentionally?) mispelled a well-known Italian name, that is Serafina, maybe by mixing it with Sara. Sarafina is something you would never hear here in Italy: as a linguistic scholar, I am always fascinated by how languages change when transplanted in another country.
Her mother was Isabella Sandtner, so maybe not all Italian descent. Her father was Thomas Valenti, so also maybe not all Italian descent. Also, there's a play Sarafina set in Soweto, and Sarafina is a lioness in The Lion King. My bet is there's a grandma or auntie Sara there somewhere.
Intriguing walk on. PSU are like other state funded schools in that few in state kids get any real scholarship money. In this ones case not even listed as one of their 2018 "signings" which means no money. Still my sources says the kid is very gifted but from some no name program near happy valley. But coaches could see her (and other relatively local kids going to big name schools) play high school and club in an afternoon or evening. No risk potentially high reward. May be fun year for them. The current freshman YNT local kid didn't play much last year. Couple other in staters did contribute and Marissa sheva has been a key player. Many of the in state kids come from the dominant PA club. Not this potential sleeper.
In case no one noticed, Elizabeth Ball made the Portland Thorns roster, after coming to pre-season camp as an undrafted invitee.
Roster Updates: Unfortunately, Laura Freigang, the German international, is gone. Laura Freigang Signs With Germany’s 1. I wouldn't read too much into preseason matches. There is way too much experimenting going on. The Penn State women’s soccer team begins its 25th season as a varsity program on August 17 against West Virginia at Jeffrey Field.
WSOC, WVB To Be Featured on ESPNU Penn State women's soccer will have one appearance on ESPNU this season, while the women's volleyball team will have two matches aired on ESPNU. Aug. 15, 2018 Big Ten Release UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women’s soccer and women’s volleyball team will both be showcased on ESPNU this fall, as announced by the Big Ten Conference and network on Wednesday. The No. 4 Penn State women’s soccer team will host preseason-No. 2 UCLA on Saturday, August 25 at 4 p.m. at Jeffrey Field. Fans unable to attend will be able to catch the action on ESPNU. The No. 6-ranked women’s volleyball team will be on ESPNU twice this season, both in Big Ten road matches. Aug. 12, 2018 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Haley Miller has joined the Penn State women’s soccer coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach, as announced by head coach Erica Dambach. Miller, a former captain for the James Madison Dukes, brings four years of coaching experience to the Nittany Lions. “Haley brings a wealth of knowledge and energy to our experienced staff,” Dambach said. “She has already fit in seamlessly with our team and is a wonderful addition to our program.” Most recently, Miller served as an assistant coach at her alma mater during the 2017 season. Prior to returning to Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 2017, she spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Villanova Wildcats. “I’d like to thank Coach Dambach and the entire Nittany Lion coaching staff for allowing me to learn from them and be a part of the Penn State women's soccer family this year,” Miller said. “I am very fortunate to have this opportunity to work with some of the best players and coaches in the country, and look forward to a great season!”

PSU vs UCLA tied 1-1 at the half. Ashley Sanchez scored for UCLA in the 29th minute on a bad giveaway in our defensive third. Sanchez chipped out keeper. Emily Ogle scored a minute later on a penalty kick for PSU after Kristin Schnurr was knocked over in the box.
Sunny Dunphy scored for UCLA in the 70th minute on an odd goal (shot/cross). Keeper catches it and linesman called the ball completely over the line. Not sure about that one. FT: UCLA 2 - PSU 1
Wasn't the keeper interfered with (pushed in) by the UCLA player when she ran into her? I don't think the PSU keeper's own momentum was enough to make here enter her own goal.
Believe it or not, that's what I originally wrote, then after checking the stats page (Dunphy's name was showing) I changed it. Although, either way, it doesn't change my heartache.
I watched a bit of that game and saw that final goal. The replays were not at all conclusive. The GK, in avoiding the opponent, pulled that ball back onto the goal line and it could have crossed completely. Only a handful of people on that exact goal line might know if it went over. Hopefully, one of them was the AR! Frankly, when I saw it, I thought the fair thing to do (upon the signal from the AR it was over the line) was for the center ref to whistle a foul, and not award the goal. You see that contact foul on keepers called all the time. Curious what any real officials out there might think. (I am not one). That PSU keeper is very good and the game was fun to watch though. If that's what top-25 D1 women's soccer looks like this year, it's pretty good. [Edit: just saw the goalline pic on the UCLA website, via Cat Whitehill twitter, and it does look IN. Still does not change the live action decision and replay review. I don't think that goalcam pic was available! but that AR got it right.]
Agree the ball was in and also agree there was Blatant and purposeful contact with the keeper. Should have been disallowed
