I hope he's not "doing promotional work for a pharmaceutical company" like Peter Pappas did. . .

Come to think of it besides consuming only the finest scotch and whisky with my friends while tailgating Le Toux is one of the only positive things I can remember about the union to date.

Seriously, this team needs a self-starter with an eye to revenue generation like Pappas again. Not as a commentator though, he sucked.

Philly already has value at the LB position. Regardless of whether you like the triumvirate of Gaddis/Fabinho/Real, bringing in Baines makes ZERO sense for Philly. Especially considering that money would be much better spent on a legit striker.

No reason for either team to want an expensive, old left back. I'll keep the Fabi/RayRay platoon and add a striker instead, please.

Wow, the academy is producing GM candidates now. Huge success.

Side note... does anyone know how much recruitment the Union has actually been doing IN Chester? Would love if they started heavily investing in the hyper-local kids.

Baines would be an upgrade at LB, albeit an expensive one, but there are other spots that need to be upgraded more. A lethal finisher would be nice.

I'd take one that could inflict a flesh wound from time to time. (Cue the Holy Grail clips)

Is an aged Baines a better defender than Ray? A better attacker than Fabi? Cheaper than their combined salaries? I never really watched him so I don’t know, but seems unlikely.

    Yes.
    Yes.
Unlikely, Baines is currently on £80K a week.

Everton are in a similar situation to the Union, no striker since Lukaku left. Rooney was the goal leader with 10, Tosun could be a 15 goal guy. LB is far from their primary need however Baines was out an extended period with a calf injury. When healthy he is their free kick/penalty taker.

Baines was the first one back in training this year. Ready for a July 14 move?

5 years ago but still one of my favorites: http://dai.ly/x102stj

Maybe at our level he would be good enough to play striker.

Ashley Cole, another high priced left back earning $723,000 this season, hasn't made much of a difference for the Galaxy.

Asking if a starting-quality PL defender is better than Ray Gaddis. What a time to be alive.

Is Leighton Baines still a starting quality PL LB? If so, why not stay in the PL and continue to collect a huge paycheck?

MLS has a salary cap. Is a $500k cap hit for Baines preferable to a $180k cap hit for Gaddis, particularly when it would prevent getting another forward?

I literally don't know. I don't watch PL. I know Baines was considered to be one of the best LBs in the league a few years ago, but that he's had some serious injury problems, is in his 30s, and is still stuck with Everton. These are question marks. Ray's defense is of a high-quality for this league (like, probably better than Ashley Cole's, for instance) so it's reasonable to question if an aging, injury-prone PL back meets the same athletic level.

I don't know the answer either, I'm just glad Gaddis has seemed to enter a new level.

The only clear answer here is to sign Baines and let Ray beat him in practice.

That sounds like a Union plan....... Bury Baines on the bench just like they did with Accam! o_O
