UWGB is open! Emailed staff in department about getting out of coaching! So add Green Bay to open jobs.
Thanks for the stats CPThomas. So based on the last three years, there have been 115 head coaching changes. Out of 334 programs. So more than ONE out of every THREE jobs has changed in the last three years, 34% to be exact. Every prospect should know that stat so they make decisions based on the school, not who the coach is at the time. Given that many of these kids are making decisions sophomore year or even freshmen year for the bigger programs, they're making a 6- to 7-year commitment when considering the time of the verbal decision. Which increases the chances of the coach leaving if not before that prospect actually gets to campus, then by the time that player is actually at that program. That's a lot of turnover. Which is another reason why I don't get why coaches recruit so early - why go after these prospects if you won't even be there? Obviously difficult to know what the future would hold, and sometimes these decisions aren't based on a coach's own accord, as in if they get fired. Maybe these recruiting rules will slow down things a bit anyway, and at least limits how much a time there is between when a kid commits and gets to campus and therefore could lessen the impact of this high turnover on the prospects.
The actual number is 114 schools with head coaching changes over the last 3 years, which means that one school changed twice. To add some more context, the number of schools with head coach changes: Since 2013: 190 Since 2014: 161 Since 2015: 136 Since 2016: 114 Since 2017: 85 Since 2018: 48 Your point is a very good one. Caveat emptor.
Tell this to the kids who get cut as soon as there is a coaching change. Pitt has cut something like 10 players this spring. ECU has 6 transfers and 8 freshman coming in, they had to make roster room and get the money from somewhere? These are just a couple of examples this year, but it happens every year. A lot of times the coach is getting let go because they aren't very good. New coach comes in and wants to make room for better players or players they like. I find it hard to say commit to the school not the coach, because once there is a coaching change the school isn't necessarily committed to you.
The coaching change and roster turnover has been discussed here and may need/have another thread. I knew someone involved in the Pitt debacle when Miller took over but don't have that knowledge this time. If Waldum is doing it, he's a jerk too. He's an idiot if he didn't get a 5-year deal and that's enough time to not have to shred the roster. How insecure are you as a coach that you have to drop a high number of scholarship kids in year 1? Very. 1- I know schools who would not allow taking money from kids in 'good standing'. Of course, if you're told "there's no chance of you playing in competitive games going forward" even if you don't take their money, then you can say the kids chose to leave right? Even if they got the multi-year deal, they want to play. 2- This can backfire of course. If you hurry and replace too many kids with other kids mainly so they are loyal rather then really much better players, you just have to eat the budget again and keep firing kids. 3- Hopefully you folks out there that have high contact with prospects are talking about your experience and examples. There's a big difference in stable programs compared to those with revolving doors and young coaches and the obvious roster rebuild every few years. Of course, ND and Waldrum where known as one of those stable programs and now already 2 coaches later in 2018. Sorry if too off topic.... enjoy your WC.
As startling as that stat is, it doesn’t help figuring out which schools will change coaches in the next four years- ertainly not within the next three. Since lots of contracts are five year deals, it could mean that going where a coach has just turned over is safer. Lots of schools in non revenue sports won’t spend the money to terminate a contract early .
Great post. Kids have to commit to a coach in addition to the school- of the coach leaves and a new one comes in with a completely different way of doing things then all of a sudden soccer may not be fulfilling anymore. Has to be the complete package with a commitment in my opinion. And I agree Waldrum is a dick if he’s just clearing out. At least give the kids a chance. Heck trust your ability as a coach that you may be able to develop them and make them better. If he’s this amazing coach that he seems to think he is then invest time in developing what you have until you can bring in your own athletes. Administration are as much to blame for letting him do it.
This seems to be a mess. Big turnover in the Colonial this off-season. http://m.wect.com/story/38486376/former-coach-wont-face-charges-weighing-legal-options-against-uncw
Wofford now open. Not the best timing but sounds like it was a career move she wanted. Perhaps good timing for the assistant for him to take over. http://woffordterriers.com/news/2018/6/26/womens-soccer-coach-amy-kiah-resigns.aspx
Maybe now Wofford will actually recruit. My team was in Greenville twice in last 2 years and multiple players had invited them. The team was at home that weekend and not one Wofford coach showed up at the fields. We were even playing So Car teams.
Probably left before she got the boot after the season. Took the program backwards so jumped before she was pushed.
I won’t speak for them not recruiting your kids game in town... but they always finished at or above where they were funded in SOCON. It’s tough to climb the table when the resources are so lopsided. Maybe a new coach can get the “new direction uptick” and outperform their resources.
Wofford is an hour from Charlotte. During a home game weekend, chances are the coaches are doing their recruiting at Charlotte Soccer Academy, watching DA and ECNL games.
11 wins in 2014. 8 wins in last 3 seasons combined. Pretty impressive how quickly the program has gone down hill under the new coach.
Wofford's Kiah was 124-191-43 in 21 seasons. Best seasons were in 1999 and 2000, first two years she was there.
Heard 3 females had phone interviews at Western Mich. last week. Typical WMU move. That job should be wrapped up shortly.
Apparently Wilmington has offered the position to a power 5 assistant who is an alum and it has been accepted.
