Kind of amazing that 88. UC Riverside and their 6-9-2 record were able to earn a bye in the tournament of the 8th best conference in the country. Of the six BW teams that made the tournament, UCR has the worst RPI and is the only one under .500.

Because of the way the games turned out I was able to watch the Davis at Northridge game on the internet feed and then catch the end of the Fullerton-UCSB game, including the kicking circus at the end. The difference in the Davis-CSUN game was an own-goal that put Davis ahead 2-1 in the second half when a CSUN defender deflected a pass heading for an Aggie running past him - unfortunately, his deflection hit the upper left corner of his own goal perfectly. I didn't see it on the stream, but the box score shows a red card to the Matadors' Jordan Kinoshi at the 90:00 mark - and he is a Senior playing in his last game, of course. The other game came down to a missed UCSB kick that was close enough to hit the crossbar. All the other kicks found net for a 1:1 (5:4) final score. It was interesting to compare and contrast the production styles of the two games. The CSUN game was just ambient sound (no announcer except for the stadium PA picked up by the mike), and the mike was apparently placed really close to the Davis bench because you could hear the coach giving instructions and criticism to his players. The UCSB broadcasts always include their homer play-by-play announcer who just can't help himself at times.
So is Tim Vom Steeg feeling any pressure from the UCSB community about his lack of results the past few years. Obviously, he earned a lot of equity with the 2004 and 2006 seasons. But after making the NCAA Tournament every year from 02 to 2011, he's now missed it four of the last five seasons including three straight. His program has always had shenanigans that were tolerated when he was winning. But now he's not winning. With there being no American football at UCSB, is Vom Steeg feeling any heat for not getting the results?

Davis @ Irvine - 0-0, with Davis putting in 6 kicks to 5 for Irvine in 7 rounds after the game to advance. In the 7th round, Davis keeper made a save on the shot from what looked like the Irvine backup keeper. The PA announced that Riverside beat Fullerton 3-2 in the other semi. Haven't checked it.

So either 165. Stetson or 119 Lipscomb is gonna be in the NCAA Tournament as they will be playing in the Atlantic Sun final.
Nope. From tbe gaucho fan board: "Once again, my hat goes off to TVS as I don’t know what else he could have done to win". Seems to sum up the general sentiment there. And the UCSB admin is pretty laid back about this sort of thing, probably because there's no alumni base of sports fans clamoring for better results.

Does anyone else think it is ridiculous that the big 10 plays their first round game (play-in game) the day before the second round of their tournament? Why not just allow 8 teams into the tournament. I'm all for giving the #1 seed an advantage come tournament time, but that is pretty crazy.
back in the day (when Sandon was much younger), the ACC used to do the same thing, #8 and #9 (commonly known as the Taratini invitational). I disagreed with that too.
They allow 9 because there's only 9 teams in the B1G. Why just have 1 team miss? If anything, have a 6 team tournament, that way 1 and 2 get a bye. The quarterfinals are 3/6 and 4/5.
Why not? if they are incapable of winning one league game, why have them in the tournament, where they have to win games to keep playing? Not to mention stack it against them by having them play 200 minutes in 24 hours. Just seems like a way to cause injuries for a participant medal. Even I remember the Tarantini invitational! I forgot that they also played those games back to back. Looks like the conference realignment helped the ACC in more ways than one.

Back before the crazy conference realignments, the ACC had nine programs: Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Maryland, NC State, North Carolina, Virginia, Va. Tech & Wake Forest. In the ACC Tournament, the 8-9 teams would have a play-in game to see who would play the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals. This was back when the ACC Tournament was at one site and was saturated with scouts, which was always pretty cool and made the quarterfinals a big event. NC State was coached forever by George Tarantini and for the last 20 years of his tenure State was usually one of the worst teams in the ACC. State almost always participated in the play-in game so we dubbed it in their coach's honor the Tarantini Invitational. And yes, I am old.

I understand the mindset of "incapable of winning one league game." My own personal feelings are not in this discussion. No one really expects a conference team to win just one game. Part of the philosophy of intercollegiate athletics is participation in an activity as an extension of the classroom (right or wrong, that's part of it). I'm sure the B1G tournament rules have had it listed as every team makes conference tournament for years. It's been a full-conference tournament for how long? In comes Maryland and Rutgers, what do we do? Keep it the same is the easy. Almost no coach will vote to say "one team will not be making the tournament." At best, they would choose to go 6-team tournament with top two getting a bye. If we are actually concerned about minutes played in a time span, they NCAA would do something about overtime, back-to-back competitions in general, or have a minutes played rule. No one cares about that, never have shown that health is a priority (see: Maryland football as example). The B1G men's soccer had 7 members from 1990-2014 (OSU, MSU, UM, Northwestern, Penn State, IU, and Wisconsin). A seven-team tournament probably did the same, a play-in for the "coveted" 3/6 match-up. I don't know the history of the B1G tournament, so, this is just a guess. In 2014, Maryland and Rutgers join and the structure just continues. Soccer coaches aren't known to really make changes that benefit the game either -- let alone have faith in conferences or NCAA in doing it.
When the B10 had 7 teams, the #1 had a bye. and they played the winner of #4/#5 the next day. While the winners of #3/#6 and #2/#7 played the latter match. 2 days later the championship match.
