So we actually have a club index ... I actually didn't know that. Well I suppose that we are moving up in the world now.
One question for the Rapids would be whether they are going to open camp a bit early to get ready for their opponent, if they get a Mexican team as is 80% likely. The Mexican clausura starts about a week or two into January. The Champions League games start in the latter part of February. I would hope the Rapids would take this seriously and get to work. This could set their season off in the right direction ... or not.
Glad that the Canadian entry has been moved into Pot 1 finally. Considering that those teams have made at least the Quarterfinals the last few years...
Kind of strange that they have an index for each particular slot rather than each country. So USA3 is the highest ranked USA slot, while USA1 and USA2 are at risk of being relegated to Pot 2 with a bad showing in this tournament.
Per the article in the Denver Post about the Hudson hiring, the CBA prevents them from opening camp until Jan 22nd. They will open on the 22nd and then leave for Casa Grande on the 24th for an intense camp to prep for the CCL. They will also participate in the Desert Diamond Cup but they will use a split squad for that should the timing overlap with the CCL.
Looking at it a bit more, the best results for USA1 and USA2--the semifinal runs by LA and Seattle in 2013--are due to go off the board next year, so Seattle and Dallas must do quite well this year to avoid one or both of those slots falling into Pot 2. And there's no longer a group stage to rack up a bunch of wins, which are the most significant factor in the formula.
So, that means that USA2, the SS winner, could end up in pot 2 next edition? or does the USSF determine which achievement gets you which position?
Wow. So they are awarding points to slots. How on earth did they got to this? So basically e.g. Seattle could win three CLs in a row, but instead of huge coefficient that they earned for themselves they could get points earned by slot that was occupied by teams that lost all of their matches.
The next edition is already going to be strange with the US teams being the two MLS Cup winners and two US Open cup winners from 2017 and 2018. Backfilling to replace double winners or Canadian teams will be according to two-year combined regular season points.
Looks like it's in order MLS Cup winner, SS winner, other conference winner, USOC winner. Though the 2019 seedings will probably be '18 MLS Cup, '17 MLS Cup, '18 USOC, '17 USOC or something similar
I bet that they change the rules if that were to happen, concacaf has $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ reasons.
Doesn't really practically change anything either, except that it means more MLS/Liga MX matches early on. If anything, having those slots drop to Pot 2 means more money for CONCACAF.
Agreed. I have no problem with it. I said at the time that CONCACAF separated Mexican and American teams for the group stage that it would worsen the tournament. And to me, it did exactly that. Let them meet whenever.
There's going to be one MLS team in Pot 2 no matter what (either one of the USA slots or the CAN slot). They've created a stupid system to determine which one it is, but that's not really a money issue.
Winner gets to play in the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup in the UAE. The 2017 edition is also in the UAE. Pachuca (and Omar Gonzalez) are about to take on Wydad Casablanca in Abu Dhabi.
