Women's tournament. Indonesia are hosting from Aug. 16-30. GROUP A Indonesia Maldives South Korea Chinese Taipei GROUP B North Korea China Hong Kong Tajikistan GROUP C Japan Vietnam Thailand Top 8 advance to knockout round.
8 teams out of 11 make the knockouts? I think it would have been a smarter idea to do two groups and a 4-team knockout phase... With the current setup, you're gonna get two third-place teams moving on to the knockouts, but one group only has three teams, so the third-place team there get screwed since they likely aren't gonna get more than 1pt. Heck, it wouldn't have been much better to do knockouts of 4 teams instead of 8 even staying with three groups, because again, the second-place team in group C is almost certainly gonna get fewer points than any other second-place teams. Basically, having uneven groups in a format where "not all teams at X place" get through is an awful setup. =edit= Heck, the men's tournament in the Asian Games has groups of 5 - if they can, so can the women's tournament. (Though the men's tournament has 6 groups for a 16-team knockout, so it's still not perfect...) =edit2= Okay, looking at the format more, the women's tournament is already set up that you're not actually comparing between the groups for slots 7 and 8 - it's just that every group is being used to eliminate the last team from the group, guaranteed. I still don't like it, but is sucks to be in group C anyway.
it's the same set-up as 2014. I thought, they couldn't make it an even 12 teams at least? Maybe for 2022 they can increase it to 16 teams?
China roster Wow! Xu Yanlu, Tan Ruyin, Yang Li, Ma Jun, Tang Jiali and Li Danyang got axed by new coach Jia Xiuquan. back again Gu Yasha, Zhao Lina (2nd come back from retirement ), Zhao Rong Huang Yini - new face?
Game 1 is coming to an end South Korea v Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) - https://en.asiangames2018.id/sport/football/event/football-women/match/fbw400a02/ The Games have a pretty well developed video page, but it doesn't look like they're streaming atm. The opening ceremony in Jakarta is on Saturday.

Lol, when I read about China's score it had looked quite impressive already to me... then I read N. Korea-Tajikistan's one!
There's something meditative about reading these Japanese FA match reports: - http://www.jfa.jp/eng/news/00018485/ (Archived) ^ Seriously, it's all like that, it's awesome Would you take a video of Indonesia v Maldives instead? The coverage of this Games is pretty random - their preferred official website "vidio.com" is blocked for me, even though the event isn't on TV here. Hopefully I can find some highlights of the sepak takraw, it's the best sport.
Check Kabaddi as well if you get a chance. I always watch it along with Sepak Takraw during Asian Games.
I didn't know that sport, but I must admit it's quite addictive to watch! 90% of the actions I wouldn't even believe they were possible for a human being before watching them. And Thailand's #12 in that video has an incredible leg-extension ability! (And she's quite pretty to boot). I suppose bragging towards the other team is part of the game, here? With this Asian games, I am discovering a lot of sports whose existence I had never suspected: on another thread Kabaddi has been mentioned!
Oh, ok, you beat me about that! Any other "strange" sport worth watching? These two already are super!

TODAY Group A South Korea 8 - Maldives 0 Chinese Taipei 4 - Indonesia 0 Group C Vietnam 3 - Thailand 2
Wow, surprised by this result: there's always a big rivality between Vietnam and Thailand, and back and forth results! Probably Viet girls wanted to show that they could have qualified for World Cup, if they had been in the right group at Asian Cup...
Well, a good option would be that Vietnam offers itself as a host of some Asian qualifying tournaments. So It would have better draws. (see the example of Jordan). In any case, Asia must revise its World Cup qualification formats for the next time to avoid a strong team like North Korea not being in the same group with South Korea, and eliminated by goal difference.
Today results : 08/22/2018 Group B Tajikistan 0-16 China PR Hong Kong 0- DPR Korea 8 Possible matches of QF : Korea vs Hong Kong North Korea ( or China PR) vs Indonesia Japan vs China PR ( or DPR Korea) Vietnam vs Taiwan It suits to Vietnam to lose or tie with Japan tomorrow and thus avoid playing with the Chinese or North Koreans
Well, those Tajiki girls are consistent: they don't stop until they've taken exactly 16 goals in each single game.
Sucks that due to the uneven draw that Thailand will miss the quarterfinals and Hong Kong will go through.
Whoever wants to see that carnage (or at least part of it: 3 or 4 goals missing from highlights, it seemed to me), will find it in the following video. The impressive part is that at HT the score was 0-3 only! In fact, in highlights from 1st half you can even see some missed chances from Chinese players and one save from Tajiki GK. This means that 13 goals were scored in 2nd half (and, apparently, 3 or 4 of them in additional time!). On 0-4 or 0-5, Tajikistan's coach can be seen still angry for the placement of his defense: little he knew what was coming up later... I figure probably China wanted to score exactly 16 to show North Korea that there was no easy way to win the group based on goal difference vs poor Tajikistan: with this win they were claiming: "We can do that too. Now playing seriously?"
