He is hoping for a move to England or Spain. The second tier teams might want him. https://www.nikkansports.com/soccer/world/news/201907170000425.html
He is not hoping. He has offers from England, Germany and Spain but its difficult he said, cause of his sallary and his job as the cambodian national coach.
Any club will have to carefully weigh the pros and cons of his his marketability in Japan against his commitment with the Cambodian NT, his aging body, etc. At his age, I think he'd fit in nicely at a mid to lower table club as a role player / veteran leader / super-sub.
No news so far about his next destination. The same with Yuki Kobayashi, who after his contract finished with SC Heerenveen, no news came about his next destination, except a rumour that he might join MLS club FC Cincinnati.
I feel like he's done playing. He doesn't seem motivated to play anymore just like Nakata was at the end of his career. He has a lot of other ventures outside of football. I think it's best he retires and focuses on coaching.
Nakata was fed up about the whole football thing and began a hippie like journey around the world. I think Honda has a different mind and goal, maybe he can be one of the oldies at Tokyo2020.
Lol at “hippie like journey”, you nailed it. Honda is clear about having a football-related career after his retirement, whether as a manager, coach, or owner/investor.
I've been following the Cambodia NT with some interest since Honda took the NT job. I don't know what they were like before, but they're playing better than I would've expected for rank 173 in the world.
Cambodia, not just the senior team, their underage teams also improved marvelously under Honda and some other Japanese coaches for the last 2 years. As their opponents in southeast asia various times, I can tell you this. They used to be one of the weakest team in our region and our team, along with Thailand or Indonesia, Malai... all treated them as point pocket. This is not true for now. If we are not serious, we may draw to them (a lost is a little far fetch). The important thing is their attitude. They improved, and not just that, they tried to play attacking, attractive footballs even though they are still consider weaker team, not play negatively to grap a point at all cost. I find it pretty impressive.
In general, ASEAN nations look really good. They're all rising. I think they won't make it for 2022 WC, but definitely one or two of them will be at the 2026 WC.
He's become a bit famous also as a coach for a couple speeches he did to the team. One pre-match against Bahrain, and one in the stadium post-game. Honda was such a champ.
Give me an offer. I don't need money but I need to play with great team and great team mate! @ManUtd @ManUtd_JP— Keisuke Honda (@kskgroup2017) September 27, 2019
Absolutely glorius and honorfull from Keisuke. I love this. The media and fans of Manchester United directly fell in love and want Honda to join cause this is some football love story and it looks like its realistic to happen. english media tell from some interests even before Hondas deal. They could need him, he is a monster the last years and Manchester United has nothing to loose, almost the hole attack is injured and they are in a little crisis this starting season. Honda could really offer something. Would be soooo cool =).
It sounded a little pitiful, but in the end... would really hurt ManUtd to have him? I don't think so. It'd be also a great marketing opening to Japan. Honda would be happy enough with 10-15 games under his belt.
