I created a spreadsheet with the results from '05, '06, '07, and '17. You can track the rest of the season against the "Worst Seasons" here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1y3HObSdLLedPhlM_a-wxMwpyS8MlqGy3U7XHhAJy1Xk/edit?usp=sharing
The broadcast did mention that Jeremy Hall of the Sac Republic is married to his daughter, so maybe we can create some kind of blame there?
My suggestion to Petke would be play everyone back for the next couple of games. Play bunker ball and see if you can't get away with a couple of 0 - 0 ties. That right there would be a victory.
It hasn't been a good week for MLS in the Open Cup. Orlando got waxed at home, Columbus lost at Cincinnati and RSL gets boat-raced at Sacramento.
10-3 against lower division teams is solid for the opening round of play. The RSL game was embarrassing and Orlando looked bad, but several other teams fielded their bench players, brought up reservists, and still cruised against very motivated opponents. Before the current CBA era, there were even a couple years MLS lost half of its opening round games. Since then, the floor is 75%.
I think, like The Franchise pointed out, you're getting too caught up in two games that are relevant to you (RSL and Columbus) in making your general statement. If only the MLS teams won this tournament would be boring as hell. We need those lower division sides to push MLS sides. 13 of the final 16 are MLS teams. As fans of US soccer as a whole, that's not a great ratio.
Don't get me wrong, I love the upsets, especially when my hometown team (Cincy) wins. Just thought having three upsets, two of which were pretty bad losses, on the same night was interesting
With Christos FC out, I'm pulling for Sacto, which is near where I was born, and similar to where I live now. Second choice is Cincinnati, not far from where I was as a missionary, and full of great fans. Then Miami after that. I'm proud of MLS as a league, and one of the effects of the current CBA is that it's harder for lower divisions to compete in the USOC, but that only increases their appeal as underdogs.
