The goal area (not goal box or 6 yard box) exists because indirect free kicks for the attacking team must occur outside of it if the infraction occurred inside the goal area. Also, goal kicks can be taken from anywhere inside of the goal area, but must clear the penalty area (not penalty box or 18 yard box) before the ball is in play.

 

I believe any restart, including GKs, but also fouls that occur in the goal area can be taken anywhere in the goal and must also clear the penalty area before being touched by another player.
