Oops, 3 DDs can still happen nowadays if Canadian teams scoop up more than 1 title. For example, FCD wins usoc, TFC wins SS, Van wins West RS title, TFC wins league. 3 DDs. And if a Div 2 team wins usoc along with Can teams scooping up the rest, all Div1 u.s. teams would be DDs. This could be the 1st time the top 5 from general table make CCL. Didn't happen last year (Crew didn't make it) or in 2014 (NE).
Some updates from the weekend: First, we'll have to wait until the MLS Cup Final to find out the last team in from the U.S., as the Seattle Sounders punked Colorado 1-0 to win their semifinal series 3-1 on aggregate. Either they make it on their own, or Toronto or Montreal let New York City FC in. Meanwhile, the semifinals are set in Mexico: Tigres UANL vs. Club León Club América vs. Club Necaxa Necaxa would technically be a Champions League debutant...but they're no strangers to continental football, and were actually the first CONCACAF side to participate in a Club World Cup. Finally, Árabe Unido and Plaza Amador will contest the Panamanian Apertura final this Saturday: Este sábado 3 de diciembre se disputará la Gran Final del Torneo Apertura 2016 entre @cdplazaamador y @ArabeUnido_. #FinalLPF— LPF TIGO (@LPFpanama) November 27, 2016
Two more in: Tigres are now installing themselves as regulars in the CONCACAF Champions League, reaching the Mexican Apertura final after dropping León 3-1 on aggregate. And the first Central American Apertura final went to what is now, bar none, the biggest and most successful club in the history of the Panamanian league (don't scoff - it's older than MLS). 2017-18 CCL Qualifiers 1. Toronto FC [CAN] 2. FC Dallas [USA] 3. Colorado Rapids [USA] 4. New York Red Bulls [USA] 5. Tigres UANL [MEX] 6. Árabe Unido [PAN]
Both of last season's finalists will be back, as the most successful club in all of CONCACAF just dropped Necaxa 3-1 on aggregate to reach the Mexican Apertura final - now set to take place once they get back from Japan. Next up, Toronto FC (representing NYCFC for our purposes) vs. Seattle Sounders in Saturday's MLS Cup final and the Central American Apertura tournaments concluding over the next few weeks. 2017-18 CCL Qualifiers 1. Toronto FC [CAN] 2. FC Dallas [USA] 3. Colorado Rapids [USA] 4. New York Red Bulls [USA] 5. Tigres UANL [MEX] 6. Árabe Unido [PAN] 7. Club América [MEX]
If the 2017-2018 CCL uses the same midweeks as in 2016-2017, the Group Stage dates would be: August 1 to 3 August 15 to 17 August 22 to 24 September 12 to 14 September 26 to 28 October 17 to 19 Considering it takes three days to convert Yankee Stadium from baseball to soccer or vice versa, it would be hard for NYCFC to play their two home games. The Yankees are at home on August 1 to 2 to rule out the first possibility. The Yankees are at home on August 15 (part of two home games and then two away games against the Mets) to rule out the second possibility. The Yankees return from a road trip on August 25, so Tuesday August 22 could be possible for NYCFC. The Yankees return from a road trip on September 14, so the stadium couldn't be configured for soccer on September 12 or 13. The Yankees are home all of September 26 to 28. October 17 to 19 will be during the MLB playoffs. Even though the Yankees will probably be eliminated by then, Yankee Stadium will need to be kept available. To conclude, I only found one possible home date, and if NYCFC qualifies for CCL they could have to play a home game somewhere else.
I know this post was meant in jest, but... If TFC wins MLSCup and NYCFC thus gets into the CCL, would it be the first time two teams from the same city were in the competition? How cool would a CCL double-header be? Four of the best teams in CONCACAF in one stadium all on the same day!
You mean in the US? The first time I can think of it happening...of course, the only other intra-city rivalry MLS has had up to now was LA Galaxy-Chivas USA, and they never coincided in the CCL (yes, believe it or not - Chivas USA actuallly played in the first-ever Champions League game, losing in Panama ).
Also Monterrey, Guatemala City, San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. I'd have to look up San Salvador, as in the Salvadoran league you have several teams from smaller municipalities that have to go the Cuscatlán for continental matches.
I guess @It's called FOOTBALL deleted their post? But thanks for the Mexico City reference - as well as Considering how big Mexico is, I wasn't sure if there had ever been concurrent CCL participants from any one city there, though for those smaller countries I guess I should have assumed. So if I had it correct, then the city doubles have been... Guatemala City - 1112, 1516 Mexico City - 0910, 1314, 1415 Monterrey - 1213, 1617 Panama City - 1213, 1415 San Pedro Sula - 0910 Tegucigalpa - 1011, 1112 I'm sure I missed some... And if you include greater metro areas, you'd have nearly every year from Costa Rica, etc. Okay, my curiosity is sated now. Thanks! ^.^
Add Panama City - 1213, 1415 @Trini_Boi help us out with Trinidad and Tobago? Don't follow the Pro League well enough to know if we've had two teams from the same city in the same Champions League.
Forgive my poor speedreading On another note: looks like we've reached a new era in Belize, with its Premier League standings now available somewhere other than Wikipedia. Via Facebook: Top 4 will take part in the Opening Season semifinals.
Do you not use FIFA standings? http://www.fifa.com/live-scores/nat...gue-of-belize-2000000144/standings/index.html
Well I'll be damned - you happen to know how often it's updated? It was always annoying having to wait for the Tuesday news reports...
Not sure. I usually default to Wiki because it's faster, but I look to the FIFA website when Wiki isn't updated. I've never noticed it being very far behind though.
Also worth noting that Nicaragua's Apertura tournament is over. They're using the same format as Costa Rica (mind you, Nicaragua had it first...then dumped it...then went back to it this year), with a regular season, a playoff league among the best four from Round 1, and then a final IF the same team doesn't win Rounds 1 and 2. Guess what: Real Estelí won the regular season with a healthy 13 points ahead of second place, then took the playoff group to claim the title. We'll now have to keep track of the Clausura regular season to see if Estelí can get back into the Champions League early.

Whodathunkit - MLS players don't uniformly hate playing in the CCL! Some of those haters circa 2008 gonna have their heads explode
Aaaaaaaaaaaand we're done with the US: the MLS Cup Final in Toronto ended scoreless, then 4-4 after 5 PKs taken each. On to sudden death: Justin Morrow hit the crossbar and out, Román Torres scored, game over, Seattle champs, NYCFC nothing. 2017-18 CCL Qualifiers 1. Toronto FC [CAN] 2. FC Dallas [USA] 3. Colorado Rapids [USA] 4. New York Red Bulls [USA] 5. Tigres UANL [MEX] 6. Árabe Unido [PAN] 7. Club América [MEX] 8. Seattle Sounders [USA]
