Just was looking at this thread and you and I were discussing how the revs were in the bottom quadrant back around memorial day. NYC was wallowing at the bottom, and had just come off their epic "NYC derby" 7 0 ass kicking at home to the cows. Look at them now - 41 points, 2nd in the east, one of the top teams in the league. They obviously had the right leadership and turned a corner while the revs regressed.
Yeah, and don't forget the only "good" team we beat this year was NY Red Bulls, but they certainly weren't very good at the time we beat them. I think they were something like 1-4-1 then, and we still needed a "controversial" goal to beat them... How the mighty, um, I mean mediocre have fallen!
It's a good observation. We beat Vancouver on the road (I think our only road win), but have looked way overmatched against MLS quality teams. That's why I really fear our chances in the USOC final - Dallas was one of those teams that had little trouble dismantling us. We'll need to catch some breaks, to have any chance.

Based on those rankings, we're one of four teams to never get into single digits throughout the season (DC, Houston, and Chicago being the others). At least we've been consistently mediocre all season.
I long for the manic-depressive days of yore, like last year, where we hit every single number between 2 and 20 at some point during the year....
How far back do power rankings go? I'd be curious to see either the average power ranking or final power ranking and where they finish in league or the playoffs to see if there is solid correlation. It seems to me that teams can just get hot at the end of the year and win or come close to winning the cup, regardless of the level of quality

BTW, if you've never read Fred Zilla's "MLSsoccer.com staff meeting" in the comments section of the Power Rankings, you should. This week, his staff meeting is a tribute to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Funny stuff.
