Mariano Heading To Monument Park On August 14 - N.Y. Yankees

TAMPA, Fla. -- The New York Yankees' 2016 promotional schedule is highlighted by a 20th anniversary celebration of the 1996 World Series championship team on Aug. 13 and the formal dedication of Mariano Rivera's Monument Park plaque on Aug. 14, it was announced on Thursday.

Rivera will see his monument added prior to the Yankees' Sunday afternoon game against the Tampa Bay Rays after having had his uniform #42 retired on Sept. 22, 2013, when the all-time saves leader was still an active player. The Yankees will celebrate their 70th Old-Timers' Day on June 12.

Yankees, Chapman Avoid Arbitration With Deal - ESPN

NEW YORK (AP) -- Closer Aroldis Chapman and the New York Yankees have agreed to a 1-year contract worth $11.325 million, avoiding salary arbitration. Acquired from Cincinnati in December, Chapman had asked for $13.1 million and had been offered $9 million when the sides exchanged figures last month.

The Yankees had previously reached deals with Nathan Eovaldi, Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova, Dustin Ackley and Didi Gregorius earlier this offseason, avoiding arbitration with all six eligible players.

Fans, even Yankees fans at heart, are worriers to their core. And so 1965 is never far away from their minds, and neither is 1965’s close cousin, 1982, the start of another fall from power. And yet even as the Yankees of the past three years have taken a step back — playing (and losing) only one postseason game — they have still managed to win 85, 84 and 87 games.

To a generation raised to believe 95 wins was a Yankees birthright, these may feel like the hungry years. But fans who lived through 1965 (77-85) and 1982 (79-83) know better. As the Yankees convene in Tampa to begin pitchers and catchers on Thursday, I am thinking of an altogether different year: 1993.

Chapman Suspended 30 Games, Won't Appeal - ESPN

New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman has been suspended 30 games by commissioner Rob Manfred under Major League Baseball's new domestic violence policy for his involvement in an alleged incident in October. Chapman will not appeal the suspension, the first handed out under a policy that MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association jointly agreed to in August.

The suspension will go into effect on Opening Day, when the Yankees play the Houston Astros. Chapman can participate in all spring training and preseason games. While Chapman's suspension is 30 games, the Yankees have been told he would be eligible to return May 9 against the Kansas City Royals even if New York doesn't play all 30 games as scheduled (due to postponements, etc.).

Alex Rodriguez plans to retire after his contract with the New York Yankees ends following the 2017 season, the designated hitter told ESPN. "I won't play after next year," Rodriguez said. "I've really enjoyed my time. For me, it is time for me to go home and be dad."

Rodriguez enters 2016 with 687 career home runs, 3,070 hits and 2,055 RBIs. He needs 28 home runs to pass Babe Ruth for 3rd on the all-time homer list. He is 69 away from passing Hank Aaron for 2nd, and needs 76 more to overtake Barry Bonds and become the all-time home run king.

Miller Suffers Wrist Fracture After Line Drive - ESPN

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The New York Yankees suffered a potentially devastating blow on Wednesday when a CT scan revealed a chip fracture in the right wrist of reliever Andrew Miller, the result of being hit by a line drive in the 7th inning of a game against the Atlanta Braves.

X-rays taken earlier had come back negative, so the Yankees believed they had dodged a bullet with Miller. The Yankees said Miller will be evaluated by a hand specialist to determine the next course of action. They did not say how long Miller is expected to be out. The injury occurred on Miller's first and only pitch of the game, which was lined back at him by Braves pinch-hitter Willians Astudillo.

MIAMI -- New York Yankees left-hander Andrew Miller was cleared to pitch with a broken bone in his non-throwing right wrist by a specialist Friday morning, according to the YES Network. Miller suffered a fractured pisiform bone in the heel of his right hand after being struck by a line drive during an exhibition game.

Dr. Patrick Owens told Miller his injury would heal on its own and should not affect his ability to pitch. Miller indicated his pain threshold will dictate how far he can go. Miller also said he did not expect the injury to hamper his ability to field his position.

DETROIT — Nick Swisher isn’t back in The Bronx yet, but if he passes a physical he will join Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on a Minor League deal this week and see time as designated hitter, in the outfield and at first base.

“He will take a physical and report to Scranton next week,’’ general manager Brian Cashman said of Swisher, who was released by the Atlanta Braves late in spring training. Swisher worked out at the Yankees’ minor league complex Saturday. If his knees pass the physical and he holds up, Swisher could offer first base protection for Mark Teixeira.

Yankee starters have been a disgrace. They are last among all A.L. rotations with only 61 2/3 total innings pitched in 11 games -- 5 2/3 innings per game. Their 5.25 ERA is the highest in the league. Meanwhile, the bullpen has been incredible. Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller have a combined 0.00 ERA and have 27 strikeouts in the 33 outs they've recorded. Middle relievers Johnny Barbato and Chasen Shreve have thrown 10 1/3 innings with a 0.00 ERA, as well. And this is before Aroldis Chapman comes back from suspension!

Alex Rodriguez was pulled from yesterday's game with left oblique stiffness. Results of an MRI exam were negative. A-Rod is hitting .145 (8-for-55) with 2 homers and 6 RBIs this season.
