Review: 2016-2017 End of Season Survey

Player of the Season (besides Messi):
Busquets - when he was off, we suffered. When he got back to his best, we looked back to our best. Probably our most irreplaceable player along with you-know-who.

Most Improved Player from last season:
Sergi Roberto or MAtS

Best New Addition (includes summer signings and promoted youths):
Umtiti

Most Underrated Player:
in Lucho's eyes, Vidal - not sure why he got shafted, but he took his chance to shine only to get injured right away. Expect bigger things from him if he stays on.
in the public's eyes, Gomes - he's pretty inconsistent, but he got blamed for much more than he deserved on many occasions.

Most Disappointing Player:
Gomes, for the pricetag. If we had bought him for >15M, I'd give him more leeway.

Goal of the Season:
This throwback tiki-taka goal in El Clásico for 1-1. Love it when we show we can still do this, vs. LPB no less.


Which goal made you yell louder?

b) Messi, 3-2 at the Bernabeu

Both a and b made me jump up and run around with my infant son in tow. Both times he started to cry because he had no idea what was making his papa go insane.

Most Memorable Match (for better or worse)
El Clásico 2-3 was admittedly a better game of football than PSG. Besides, the 6-1 will be tarnished by our 0-3 bowing out to Juve.

Best Moment of the season (on or off the pitch / use your own criteria):
The enduring image of Messi holding out the #10 shirt to the awe-struck Bernabeu mandriles. The ultimate mic drop.

Worst Moment of the season (on or off the pitch / use your own criteria):
0-4 to PSG. A truly pathetic performance unlike any I've seen in decades from this club.

On a scale of 1 (disastrous) to 10 (outstanding), how would you rate the season overall?
6 - by our own lofty standards, we weren't that fun to watch week-to-week, and had shocking collapses at PSG and to a lesser extent at Juve.

Ernesto Valverde looks set to become the new Mister. Do you like the appointment?
Glad we didn't go with the 'inside hire' Unzué because the club needs a new direction, and some players need new motivation. Valverde probably brings the right tactical know-how, and has experience at the club as a player, but the big question is can he man-manage at this level. Yeah, he coached Espanyol for a couple years a decade ago, but the perico stench can be sprayed off with a quick powerwash.

Hope Sampaoli becomes Argentine NT coach to help Messi claim his first WC in Russia.

Signing: a RB - either from La LIga: Mariano, Gaspar, Mallo? Or from outside: Bellerin, Dani Alves??
Promoted: Aleñá

This player needs to go!
Mathieu - he's a liability, and old.
Gomes at least has some potential still because of his age.

Does the pre-season Clasico in Miami interest you?
Meh, not any more than another pre-season game. And now that we're going to have 2 SuperCopa matches vs. LPB, it's just meaningless overkill and cheapens the rivalry to have 2 squads of mostly youth scrubs playing a 'Clásico.'

Any other comments?
Next season leads into WC 2018. I expect Messi to become more of a midfielder, as he will also become more of a classic #10 with his NT (assuming they qualify!). Messi with Dybala and Kun up front for ARG. He's going to be absolutely on fire trying to hit peak form for next summer. Best Leo is still to come. Neymar is also going to take on more responsibility.

Player of the Season (besides Messi): Neymar. Tough one. Even with the poor finishing, I'd have to pick him as offensively he is the one who took some of the weight off Messi's shoulders in the build up of plays.


Most Improved Player from last season: Ter Stegen


Best New Addition (includes summer signings and promoted youths): Umtiti. Slim pickings.


Most Underrated Player: Ter Stegen


Most Disappointing Player: Gomes, although not much expectations other than the price tag. Masch and Iniesta had poor seasons, but they are just showing their age.

Goal of the Season: Messi's winner in the Bernabeu.

Worst Moment of the season (on or off the pitch / use your own criteria): 0 x 4 vs PSG with LE losing the locker room. That's when you knew there was real trouble. And the loss to Malaga was gut wrenching.


On a scale of 1 (disastrous) to 10 (outstanding), how would you rate the season overall? 5,5 . Technically only 3 points away from La Liga title, but performance wise a lot to be desired.
