Expansion Draft rules: MIN and ATL will each select 5 players, no team can lose more than 1 player. So that means 10 teams will lose 1 player, 10 teams will lose 0 players. Expansion Draft protection: 11 players can be protected. 3 international players must be protected. HG's and GA's are automatically protected on top of the 11 players. I think all of our GA's will have graduated due to playing time (Miller, Hairston, and technically MacMath and Howard) but Calvert, Pfeffer, and Serna will be protected as HG's (Calvert's and Pfeffer's HG status carried over after their acquisition according to the list posted on MLSSoccer.com in Sept.).
2017 Superdraft picks: 1st round - None, traded for JJ (would have been pick #20) 2nd round - None, traded for MacMath (would have been pick #42) 3rd round - None, traded for Conor Doyle (would have been pick #64) 4th round - Pick #86 Also for future reference our fist round pick in 2018 was traded to Montreal for Miller and we have a conditional pick coming to us from DC in 2018 in the Sarvas trade.
Here is a modified version of the Expansion Draft list I posted earlier that's now adjusted to consider Serna, Calvert, and Pfeffer automatically protected as HG players. Homegrown Players (automatically protected) Serna Pfeffer Calvert The 11 Players to Protect Cronin Howard Sjoberg Gashi Hairston Azira Badji Watts Miller MacMath Burling Unprotected Players Powers Greenspan Williams Burch Berner K. Doyle Jones Le Toux St. Ledger Castillo Pappa C. Doyle Out On Loan (exempt from draft?) Ramirez
I am torn if Howard needs Protecting (If no movement in contract he must be on list). But the highest paid GK in MLS who will miss start of season with injury recovery time has me thinking- no protect.
The only real difficult decision is between Burch and Burling. I think you could argue either way on them, but I went with Burling because CB depth is a greater need for us right now and we still have Williams if Burch is picked. He's our marquee player that has helped sell more shirts, filled more seats, and brought in more sponsor revenue than anybody else on the roster. Exposing him would be absolutely insane.
I'm also 100% sure (or as sure as I can be without seeing the actual contract or talking to somebody who has) that he has a no-trade clause so we have to protect him. There's no way Tim comes back to MLS from England without a no-trade clause and a guaranteed contract.
Yeah, I can't believe he'd sign a big contract here without a no-trade clause. Even if that wasn't the case...the club put in a ton of work, made a bunch of deals, and horded allocation to get him. They literally gambled half of the season on him. He instantly became one of the most marketable players in all of MLS, even before he played a game in Colorado. He also put up some big performances, and had a major hand in getting us into the Western Conference Final. There is absolutely no way any club would put themselves in a situation where another club could just swoop in and grab him for nothing.
Ahh, you make it sound like they had a "plan" which from evidence we have they didn't and just got lucky Howard decided to come back to MLS. But as I stated, I really would question anyone claiming he didn't have a "No Movement" piece in contract which is MLS's version of no trade.

Basically, nothing worth picking up unless the team trades further future picks for now.. I think JJ in his short time proved worthy. MacMath I think could have been for later round pick, but was good for his time in net and will be until TH returns, if he's not picked up in Expansion. Doyle, totally worthless. Hopefully they'll find a diamond in the rough in the 4th..
2016 Roster Review and Expansion Draft preview: http://view-from-the-couch.blogspot.com/2016/12/2016-roster-review-and-expansion-draft.html Here's my prediction for our protected list, including HG players: Azira, Burch, Burling, Calvert, Cronin, K.Doyle, Hairston, Howard, Gashi, Pfeffer, Powers, Serna, Sjoberg, Watts, and possibly one young player with potential (if Hairston is auto-protected as a GA player).
Rapids trade an international slot to Atlanta for 2017 and 2018 for Atlanta's 2nd round pick in next month's Superdraft. 1st round - None, traded for JJ (would have been pick #20) 2nd round - #24 from Atlanta for a international slot for 2 years, ours traded for MacMath (would have been pick #42) 3rd round - None, traded for Conor Doyle (would have been pick #64) 4th round - Pick #86
So what exactly does this mean for the Rapids? Will they have fewer international players next season than this season? Does it mean they are looking to acquire more talent via MLS trades rather than from outside the US?
None of the above, its fairly meaningless. Yeah, we can have 1 less international but that's not going to hurt us, cut Castillo or Williams.
Greenspan traded to Minnesota for a third round pick. http://www.coloradorapids.com/post/...de-defender-joseph-greenspan-minnesota-united
That I didn't see coming. I wonder if the fact that we've made trades with both expansion teams today means we'll be skipped in their expansion drafting.
1st round - None, traded for JJ (would have been pick #20) 2nd round - #24 from Atlanta for a international slot for 2 years, ours traded for MacMath (would have been pick #42) 3rd round - #45 from Minnesota for Greenspan, ours traded for Conor Doyle (would have been pick #64) 4th round - Pick #86
That would sense...otherwise an international slot seems more useful than a 2nd round pick. I guess trading Greenspan along with Watts seemingly overtaking Burling means they're going away from the all redwood backline idea.
