Sports fans across nearly 1 million Comcast-wired homes will see the YES Network go dark at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday. Talks to hammer out a new carriage agreement between the cable giant and the Fox Sports-owned regional sports network broke down, leading Comcast to pull the plug on the channel that airs the games of the New York Yankees, Brooklyn Nets and the NYC Football Club.

“YES Network carried approximately 130 baseball games this past season and well over 90% of our 900,000-plus customers who receive YES Network didn’t watch the equivalent of even one quarter of those games during the season, even while the Yankees were in the hunt for a playoff berth,” Comcast said in a statement.

The Tampa Bay Rays have claimed Yankees pitcher Chase Whitley off waivers while he recovers from Tommy John surgery. The Rays made the move Friday. The Yankees were seeking to clear roster spots ahead of the winter meeting draft.

New York added three players to its 40-man roster -- right-handers Johnny Barbato, Rookie Davis and outfielder Ben Gamel -- protecting them from the winter meeting draft on Dec. 10.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The New York Yankees have acquired Starlin Castro from the Chicago Cubs to be their new second baseman. The Yankees will send pitcher Adam Warren and a player to be named later to the Cubs. Second baseman Brendan Ryan is the player to be named, according to multiple reports.

Castro, a 3-time All-Star, fits the Yankees' goal to become younger and more athletic. The 25-year-old hits right-handed, which is another Yankees need, as the team struggled last season against left-handed pitching.

In 2015, Castro hit .265 with a .671 OPS. He is owed $38 million over the next four seasons. He also has a team option for $16 million in 2020. He will be teamed with shortstop Didi Gregorius to form a young, potentially dynamic core in the Yankees infield.

Warren shuttled back and forth between being a starter and a reliever with the Yankees. He was dependable, but the Yankees never fully trusted him as a starter. He finished last season at 7-7 with a 3.29 ERA.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The New York Yankees have traded lefty reliever Justin Wilson to the Detroit Tigers for minor league pitchers Luis Cessa and Chad Green. The Yankees made the trade to add starting pitching depth at Triple-A to protect an uncertain major league rotation. Last season, Cessa, 23, had a 4.52 ERA between Double- and Triple-A, and Green had a 3.93 ERA at Triple-A.

Cashman said he liked the idea of dealing Wilson because Wilson is entering his "money-making years" -- he is eligible for arbitration for the first time. The Yankees think Jacob Lindgren, their No. 1 pick in 2014, Chasen Shreve and James Pazos are three lefties who could replace Wilson. "I'm also not done," Cashman said. "I have a lot of other conversations."

New LED Lights Set To Illuminate Yankee Stadium - CBS2

Yankees fans are about to watch games in a whole new light with the field illuminated by brand new LED lights. They look like small square panels — nearly 1,400 of them around the edge. Stadium Operations V.P. Doug Behar said the new lights will upgrade the viewing experience at the game and on TV with a truer, more natural-looking light. Yankee Stadium is the second MLB stadium to switch to LED field lights.

“The Seattle Mariners did it. It went incredibly well. Their feedback was tremendous — from fans, the players, broadcasters,” said Behar. The field as of Thursday was ready for The Pinstripe Bowl, where the lights will make their debut. Next month, the blue Yankee Stadium lettered signs will be next to go LED. They will greet fans driving by and waving until it’s time for Opening Day.

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees have bolstered an already dominant bullpen, acquiring hard-throwing All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman from the Cincinnati Reds for four minor leaguers, the team announced Monday. The Reds, who have shed several veterans in the past six months, get right-handers Caleb Cotham and Rookie Davis and infielders Eric Jagielo and Tony Renda from New York.

Chapman became available after the Reds' deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers fell through during baseball's winter meetings three weeks ago when it was learned Florida police investigated the accusation of domestic violence involving the Cuban left-hander. The addition of Chapman sets up the possibility of a lockdown bullpen that can effectively shorten games to six innings, reducing the demands on the Yankees' aging and shaky starting rotation.

Chapman, a 27-year-old left-hander, is eligible for free agency after next year's World Series. After defecting from Cuba in 2009, Chapman spent the last six seasons with the Reds and saved 146 games in 164 chances. He had a 1.63 ERA this year, when he struck out 116 in 66 1/3 innings. He was an All-Star in each of the past four seasons.

The Yankees made a small addition Friday, acquiring right-handed reliever Kirby Yates from the Indians in exchange for cash considerations. The 28-year-old was designated for assignment this week by Cleveland, which had purchased Yates’ contract from Tampa Bay in November.

After a solid 2014 season, when he appeared in 37 games for the Rays and finished with a 3.75 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 36 innings, Yates stumbled last season. He had a 7.97 ERA and WHIP of 1.475 in 20 1/3 innings, and perhaps most alarmingly, he surrendered 10 homers.

Olson, 26, made his major league debut for Seattle in 2015, pitching in 11 games and posting a 5.40 ERA. Terreyes, 23, made his major league debut for the Dodgers in 2015, playing in eight games. He is primarily a second baseman and shortstop with some experience at third base and left field.

Pineda and Ackley signed non-guaranteed 1-year deals prior to Friday's 1PM ET deadline for exchanging arbitration figures. Terms of the deals were not disclosed, but according to Yahoo Sports!, Pineda will receive $4.3 million, and MLB Network's Jon Heyman said Ackley will earn $3.2 million.

The Yankees also came to terms with righty Nathan Eovaldi on a 1-year, non-guaranteed contract. Eovaldi will make $5.6 million, according to a source. Both deals leave the Yankees with two remaining arbitration-eligible players – Aroldis Chapman and Ivan Nova.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees first base prospect Greg Bird will have right shoulder surgery Tuesday and will miss the entire 2016 season, the team announced. The Yankees said Monday that Bird's torn labrum will be repaired by Dr. David Altchek at The Hospital for Special Surgery. The team said the injury is a reoccurrence of one originally sustained last May.

Bird, who turned 23 in November, made his big league debut on Aug. 13 and took over at first base when Mark Teixeira got hurt. Bird hit .261 with 11 homers, 31 RBI and 9 doubles in 157 at-bats and had been viewed as protection against injuries to the oft-hurt Teixeira, who is entering the final season of his contract.
