Gonna try to predict. Conmebol - Corinthians - BRA UEFA - Real Madrid - ESP Concacaf - América - MEX CAF - TP Mazembe - DRC OFC - Auckland City - NZE AFC - Al-Ain - UAE JFA - Kashima Antlers - JPN
At present... UEFA: Round-of-16 CONMEBOL: Not Started CONCACAF: Quarter-finals AFC: Not Started CAF: Not Started OFC: Group Stage Host: Not Started Japan is going back to the "two-stage" season format. CONCACAF now have a title sponsor in Scotiabank. Maybe they can finally pay some decent prize money. Now if FIFA would finally confirm Japan as host and state the exact format...
So if I can count correctly, the number of teams in each are: Asia (52), North America (8), South America (35; 38 entered, 3 Mexico teams not eligible for CWC), Oceania (12), Africa (57), Europe (16), Host (18) ... bring on the "198 to 1" thread!
For CONCACAF and UEFA I think you should include the clubs eliminated last year. CONCACAF started with 24 and UEFA started with 77, giving a total of 275.
Nothing at the club football committee meeting: http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/organisation/news/newsid=2506389/ Do we really have to wait until the ExCo meeting in March?
Correct. In 2010, Hekari United of Papua New Guinea was in the Club World Cup. Auckland City was in the 2009 Club World Cup. Waitakere United was the Club World Cup most recently in 2008.
On the topic of whether the CWC matters: a certain Cristiano Ronaldo felt it was fair game bringing up Madrid's current world championship to mock Córdoba fans as he walked off the field today (sent off).
If America wins the CCL I expect you Swiss to be the first to congatulate me on America being continental champ! and @Paul Calixte , I expect you to be the second person
Auckland City's heroics last year have benefitted the whole ASB Premiership. About 50% of the FIFA prize money is always shared with the rest of the league. That is the reason the ASB Premiership vetoed a Wellington Phoenix participation in the OFC CL in the past with New Zealand Football. Morocco 2014 also allowed Emiliano Tade to sign a professional contract back home in Argentina. Not bad after arriving in New Zealand as a pot-washer initially. I will congratulate you if they avoid defeat to Auckland.
When do we get news about the host nation? Is Japan confirmed? I need to start planning my trip, because Boca Juniors is due to win it this year.
Not yet. I'm now thinking whatever decisions are left (format?) will be taken at the FIFA ExCo meeting in March. On a separate note, after the positive hype around the ISL tournament, Indian football is back in reality. The AIFF's sole ACL representative Bengaluru FC has already crashed out of the competition in the very first preliminary hurdle. Courtesy of Malaysian champions Johor.
The first representative know will be Oceania. The OFC recently released the schedule for this years OFC Champions League. Final will be on April 26th in Fiji.
Last year they also had the group stage in Fiji but then switched to home & away for the semis and final. Must be a cost-cutting move.
Btw, I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've seen a "Team Wellington" in this tournament...are they sure it's not Wellington Phoenix in disguise?
Team Wellington gave Auckland City a 4:0 beating in November before they left to Morocco. Unless I'm mistaken that's the highest league loss in Auckland history. Curious to see if they have what it takes to wrestle the OFC title away this year. As for Wellington Phoenix, they have entered a youth team into the ASB Premiership this season.
So I guess this December, the CWC teams will be posted up in the airport like the Simpsons were in the episode where they went to Japan. Wearing different gear from different countries since they won't know where they'll be headed till the very last minute...
Sure it is a cost-cutting move. It was first five-six months long home-away group stage competition. Then, they moved it to be played at the end of the season, also home-away group stage. Last year they played part of it in Fiji and then home-away for semifinal. Now, whole competition at the neutral ground. Shame, I'd say, FIFA must help them fund proper few months long competition. Will be tough for ACFC, New Zealand teams don't like to play in Pacific. If there was any bet option for that, I'd put my money on Amicale to win it.
Scotiabank Champions League knockout stages gets underway tomorrow with Olimpia vs Herediano and Pachuca vs Montreal Impact. Saprissa vs America on wednesday Alajuelense vs DC United on thursday.
While we are still completely in the dark about this year's tournament (this really has been handled poorly) the knock-out stages are underway in UEFA and CONCACAF. SCCL - Quarterfinals, First Leg: Pachuca (Mexico) - Montreal (Canada) 2:2 Olimpia (Honduras) - Herediano (Costa Rica) 1:1 Saprissa (Costa Rica) - Club America (Mexico) 0:3 Alajuelense (Costa Rica) - DC United (USA) 5:2 Things are looking good for two of the three Costa Rican sides. Only Saprissa is hopelessly behind against tournament favorites America. Surprising draw by Montreal at Pachuca who now get to host the return leg in front of a big crowd. Last time Montreal hosted a quarterfinal against a Mexican club 55,000 showed up. Still a record in the "Champions League" era and potentially all-time (the Champions Cup admin records aren't the greatest) The Group Stage in Asia has also begun. Wondering how Western Sydney Wanderers are doing? After 16 domestic matches in the current A-League season they have exactly one win and sit at the very bottom of the table with a measly 8 points. Did that impact their ACL campaign? Nope, they went to Japan this week and beat Kashima Antlers. For whatever reason they are simply more focused in their international games. Still, to think that this team was 3 minutes away from an encounter with Real Madrid last year...
