"Out" mean they're out of contract or they've officially been let go? I didn't hear about Sanchez, I did expect Horton though.
Sanchez and Horton were cut today http://sports.yahoo.com/news/citing-salary-cap-concerns-columbus-150546974--mls.html
I've gotta say--credit to Bliss for consistently speaking frankly and concisely with the press. If we were cutting players under Warzycha he would mention some platitude about "responsibility" that gave us little understanding of what is happening behind the scenes. The two or three articles I've read with Bliss discussing Sanchez and Horton paint a very clear picture about where they are, where they were expected to be, and why he thought they didn't meet those expectations.
I do like how Bliss is straight forward. I was impressed when he flat out as stern as possible said he wanted the job, that's what he was here for. Don't beat around the bush. That said, GBS will make an excellent replacement for him full time. Seriously, Bliss leaving the club entirely would hurt to see. Tchani leaving the club entirely would not hurt to see.
How do we draft this year and let go of players considering upcoming expansion drafts? Do we keep players like Tchani and Meram this year so we don't lose somebody more valuable?
I see no reason to do that, I'd rather have a good 15th guy on the roster and lose him after two years, instead of keeping crap in and around the starting XI
HAHA! Sure it is. This isn't the positive, touchy-feely, good thoughts and sunshine thread. This is Big Soccer Realz!
Let me get this straight. You want to keep players (who are not good enough) around for next season on the off chance that these players (that are not good enough) are magically picked up by an expansion side? So when they are not picked up in the expansion draft do we cut them anyway?
I wonder if he has a clause that we have to exercise his option early. His contract runs through Dec 31 so you'd think we'd let the new coach be involved in roster decisions.
I am fine with keeping Arrieta. Sure his numbers were down but look at the guys intangibles. 2 things. 1) With Gaven back for next year we will be able to move Oduro up top. This will create more opportunity for Arrieta to work a channel. Dom gets into a good place on the field and has no one to cross to. vice versa. 2) The first half of the season he was with the Nats team and didnt have a good run of games. I think an actual full season with the first team make him a 5-10 goal kind of guy. I am fine with this if oduro scores 10, higuain 5-10 and gaven 5+. This is how we won in 2008. Bonus: Arrieta led the league in offside during the first 16 games (if i have my dates correct). His remaining portion of the season, after he corrected this glaring mistake, saw 3 goals and 4 asssits.
