I think Canada's record in 2004 has a lot to do with why Stalteri isn't up there. Although he definitely could be considered one of the top 5 in the region.

    1. Beasley
    2. Marquez
    3. Cherundolo
    4. Ruiz
    5. Tim Howard

Yeah, yeah, yeah, no way Howard is top 5 now, but he was GK of the Year in the Premiership for the season running until June '04. Why Beasley and not Marquez? Goals, baby. It may not be fair, but goal-scorers win these things.

And I admit to only passing knowledge of players not in MLS or US nationals. How well if Ricardo Gardner playing for Bolton?

I think he means soon to be CL champ with Barca. But my real point is, if you vote for Rafa because of he's in the round of 16 in CL with Barca, then Beasley should be the top vote getter. DMB is scoring goals for PSV and they too are in the round of 16 in CL.

If you'll bother looking at my quote that I sadi he had only a few games in 2004.

Yes, I believe 20 games for a whole year is only a few.

25 for half a season isn't just a few, and if you're gonna play that card, Marquez wasn't playing alot for Barca until the 04-05 season, so he really didn't play many more games than DMB.

    Hey I got an idea!

Let's all stop bickering about this and start voting in polls! I'll even suggest a system. We can have like 16 nominees and a bracket with voting. Anybody like my idea? I'll even come up with the nominees if you like.

Re: who is the best defender in concacaf?

By this time next year, this will be a no-brainer, Chad Marshall is going to be a force to reckon with in Concacaf.

Official Voting: Big Soccer 2004 CONCACAF Player of the Year

Okay, so instead of argueing about this in that other thread I made a poll. These thirteen are the players mentioned in the other thread. (except for 2 players I'd never heard of and couldn't find elsewhere, but they were only mentioned once each).

I have to give Marquez a slight edge over Donovan for playing in a better league, playing on a defense only allowing 1 goal in 8 WCQ (yes, I know they played total crap teams), and captaining a team that went 8-0-0 in WCQ (read above). USA did underachieve in some games (@ Grenada, @ Jamaica, @ Panama).
