This information is taken from issue 58 of "Kicker sportmagazin" dated 15 July 1974. "Kicker" held a survey among 67 sports journalists about the best players of the 1974 World Cup. Each journalist was asked to rank the six best players. Based on that, "kicker" used an inverted points system to compile the list of the best players. "Kicker" published the vote of each journalist and the final overall result. I took the final list and separated it into tactical categories forwards, midfielders, defenders and goalkeepers: Forwards 01 Cruyff - 372 02 Lato - 37 03 Gadocha - 26 04 Müller - 15 05 Szarmach - 10 06 Dzajic - 9 07 Edström - 6 08 Bajevic - 4 08 Jairzinho - 4 10 Rep - 3 11 Sparwasser - 1 Midfielders 01 Deyna - 175 02 Neeskens - 120 03 Oblak - 46 04 Bremner - 32 05 Babington - 28 06 Hoeness - 27 07 Mazzola - 22 08 Overath - 15 09 Rivelino - 6 10 van Hanegem - 5 10 Bonev - 5 12 Acimovic - 4 Defenders 01 Beckenbauer - 278 02 Pereira - 35 03 F.Marinho - 26 04 Breitner - 22 05 Vogts - 13 06 Figueroa - 8 07 Bransch - 1 Goalkeepers 01 Hellström - 26 02 Maier - 10 03 Francillon - 5 04 Tomaszewski -3 Overall 01 Cruyff – 372 02 Beckenbauer – 278 03 Deyna – 175 04 Neeskens – 120 05 Oblak – 46 06 Lato – 37 07 Pereira – 35 08 Bremner – 32 09 Babington – 28 10 Hoeness – 27 11 Hellström – 26 11 F.Marinho – 26 11 Gadocha – 26 14 Breitner – 22 14 Mazzola – 22 16 Müller – 15 16 Overath – 15 18 Vogts – 13 19 Szarmach – 10 19 Maier – 10 21 Dzajic – 9 22 Figueroa – 8 23 Rivelino – 6 23 Edström – 6 25 van Hanegem – 5 25 Francillon – 5 25 Bonev – 5 28 Acimovic – 4 28 Bajevic – 4 28 Jairzinho – 4 31 Rep – 3 31 Tomaszewski – 3 33 Sparwasser – 1 33 Bransch – 1 Best XI --------Gadocha-----Cruyff------Lato -----------Oblak-----Deyna-----Neeskens --F.Marinho---Pereira---Beckenbauer---Vogts ---------------------Hellström I will upload the original "kicker" document tomorrow.
Interesting list Much more interesting that Francillon gets the 3rd place among keepers, even when Haiti received 12 goals. Edit: I see at Wiki that after WC, he was signed by a german club.
Unfortunately "kicker sportmagazin" did not publish all 67 votes but only 34. The journalist that voted for Francillon is not included.
Is it correct that Pelé and Seeler voted too and Michels as "one of the few" national team managers (perhaps only one?) declined to vote? That's what I read some years back and took/typed over. So, ZDF Sportschau, FIFA president Havelange, a Montreal based news agency journalist (if I read correctly?) the Hungarian UEFA ExCom member (listed next to the FIFA members), Geoffrey Green, Karl-Heinz Heimann, Helmut Schön, Willie Ormond (Scotland NT manager) deviated from the other published votes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoffrey_Green https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl-Heinz_Heimann http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/fif...sheet-fifaorderofmerit(1984-2010)_neutral.pdf
Here's the report published by "Rothmans Football Year Book" covering the 1974 World Cup: http://www.historical-lineups.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/1974.pdf
From the ratings that were published in As and in France Football and also taking into account the collective results, these are the players that come out as the highlights of the tournament: 1.- Cruyff (Holland) 8.62 2.- Neeskens (Holland) 8.27 3.- Deyna (Poland) 8.22 4.- Bonhof (RFA) 8.20 5.- Gadocha (Poland) 8.18 6.- Lato (Poland) 8.10 7.- Szarmach (Poland) 8.07 8.- Bremner (Scotland) 7.90 10.- Pereira (Brazil) 7.75 11.- Beckenbauer (RFA) 7.66 12.- Tomaszewski (Poland) 7.60 13.- Edstrom (Sweden) 7.56 14.- Bonev (Bulgaria) 7.55 15.- Figueroa (Chile) 7.53 16.- Hellstrom (Sweden) 7.52 17.- Maier (RFA) 7.52 18.- Vogts (RFA) 7.49 19.- Oblak (Yugoslavia) 7.46 20.- Suurbier (Netherlands) 7.42 Marinho (Brazil) 7.42 Rensenbrink (Netherlands) 7.42 23.- Maszczyk (Poland) 7.38 24.- Mazurkiewicz (Uruguay) 7.30 Mazzola (Italy) 7.30 26- Jansen (Holland) 7.26 27.- Katalinski (Yugoslavia) 7.18 28.- Lorimer (Scotland) 7.17 29.- Heredia (Argentina) 7.07 Krol (Netherlands) 7.07 31.- Babington (Argentina) 7.05 32.- Gorgon (Poland) 7.04 33.- Overath (RFA) 7.03 34.- Dzajic (Yugoslavia) 6.96 35.- Van Hanegem (Netherlands) 6.92 36.- Breitner (RFA) 6.88 37.- Maric (Yugoslavia) 6.87 Larsson (Sweden) 6.87 39.- Reynoso (Chile) 6.86 40.- Hoeness (RFA) 6.80 Are there other published ratings of the WC 74 published somewhere on this forum?
In view of this, the ideal XI could be: Tomaszewski; Vogts, Beckenbauer, Pereira, Francisco Marinho; Neeskens, Deyna, Bohhof; Lato, Cruyff, Gadocha. Bench: Hellstrom, Figueroa, Suurbier, Bremner, Oblak, Szarmach and Edstrom.
Wasn't familiar with Gadocha before. Interesting to see that he played out on the left as a right footer. Do we know of any other examples from back in the day of "inverted wingers"?
From the Bundesliga: Sigfried Held, Willi Lippens, Jupp Heynckes, Ulrik Le Fevre, Georg Volkert, Franck Ribery.

These are estimates from a newspaper "People ", before the final match, I could not find the final ranking, unfortunately!
I will send you a screenshot right away. I could really use the ones from "El Mundo Deportivo" that I don't have, do you have them or could you download them from the newspaper library of that publication?
And do you have only the 3 matches of Bulgaria team with the assessments of the AS or where can I find them?
I think the "superb display of speed and unselfishness" by Cruyff was against Sweden (they wrote Yugoslavia by mistake and of course the Netherlands didn't play Yugoslavia - they played East Germany on the same day the newspaper was on sale - Sunday the 30th of June). The previous excerpt you posted alluded to Neeskens being given a 10 and a 9 vs East Germany and Brazil (taking his tally to 49 points over 6 games = 8.167 which is rounded down to 8.1 - I discovered previously that the People always rounded averages down rather than to the nearest number to one decimal place, hence 8.1 not 8.2). Cruyff must have attained 17 points over those two games from the People (probably an 8 and a 9), to move his average to exactly the same (49 points from 6 games too). I found a reference to the final rankings before, as I posted here (I had used up my free views on other pages by then though so I didn't inspect further): https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/1...riedebert-becker.2004460/page-3#post-40104370 I made this post afterwards too, and I think you basically posted the contents of the bottom two links now Pavlin (the top link is after only 2 games, so not really relevant for final ratings but could be interesting as well as helpful in working out the ratings they gave for each game): https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/1...riedebert-becker.2004460/page-3#post-40104379
Actually, no surely it was against Bulgaria (the 3rd group game of the Netherlands, after the '2 game update'), which maybe makes the 'Yugoslavia' slip up slightly more understandable (since Bulgaria is an Eastern European country at least). I suppose the description could equally apply to both his performances vs Sweden and Bulgaria, but yeah it must relate to the Bulgaria game I think (I realised after I'd made my post this morning, when I thought about it properly). Anyway his average was at 8 per game after the first four games clearly (I see from Titanlux's post that with AS it was actually at 9 per game, with 9 for every performance up to and including the Argentina one).
@Titanlux I think there is a 9 that is accidentally placed in the table for Rensenbrink's AS grade vs Sweden (the second group game of the Netherlands) isn't there? I just thought I'd let you know, so you could remove it and then I suppose his AS average rating from their grades will be close to 6.5 rather than over 7. EDIT - It is not that I think his place in the table is over-stated myself - actually my inclination might be to think it could be even higher probably (I suspect I could be giving him higher than 4 vs Bulgaria, higher than a 7.5 vs East Germany perhaps, and suchlike). But yeah, I just noticed the accidental inclusion of the 9 in a game he didn't play.
