For ages the official records have had a six-way tie for top scorer at Chile 1962, with 4 goals apiece. I recently read a Chilean article (dated either 2001 or 2002) which said that Drazan Jerkovic (Yugoslavia) had been credited with an extra goal, and was now official top scorer with 5--but it provided no details. FIFA's official website match reports still credit Jerkovic with only 4; however, a 2002 edition of FIFA Magazine lists him as sole top scorer with 5. Almost all the web sources I've been able to find still list him with 4. Does anyone know exactly when the change was made (or if the change was made at all), and if there was a change, what the circumstances were? Thanks!

Interesting. I can't see where the goal would come from. The first thing that springs to mind is that perhaps a deflection from one of Jerkovic's shots had previously been credited as an Own Goal to a player on the opposing team. But IIRC there were no Own Goals in Yugoslavia's total.

I would be interested to see the story behind it, if there was a change it would obviously have to come off someone else's goal total.

The game in question was Yugoslavia's final group match against Colombia.

Traditionally the list of scorers is "1:0 Galić 21, 2:0 Jerković 25, 3:0 Galić 62, 4:0 Melić 82, 5:0 Jerković 88" but Jerkovic has in some cases been given the hat-trick.

I'm not sure which of the goals was credited to him, but I accidentally gave him the hat-trick in my feature.

A 2002 German book on Chile 1962 (Agon Verlag, author Matthias Voigt) gives Galic the two goals against Colombia. On the first there is no description; the second is described as being a header on a cross by Jerkovic. Maybe it's the second goal, and there's a question on whether he actually touched it?

Yes, great article and Planet World Cup is a great site. Don't know if it is well-known round here, but the author of the PWC article is the guy who started this thread.

Thats a great site. Thanks for the link.

I was looking for the reference on 5 goals and like gohb mentioned there's not many.

I found this on BBC spanish version with 5 goals.

15 years after the initial post... FIFA have Jerkovic as joint topscorer with 4 goals. They have written his name as Drazen.

Yet on Galic's FIFA page they have him with 3 goals for WC 1962.

I found this three websites that list him with 5 goals.

    http://worldcupyears.com/years/1962statistics.shtml

Only this one gives explanation (note 5) as why they listed him with 5 goals.
