FIFA press release can be found at https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/...ees-and-10-video-assistant-referees-appointed tl;dr version: Geiger and Marrufo both got kept. Irmatov (among others) getting sent home. Also, very nice to see Matt Conger kept as well!
So....from the way they listed CRs and VARs separately, do we assume all referees are also available as VARs, but obviously not vice-versa? Or is this saying Geiger is done as a VAR?
Let's see. 17 referees retained. 8 matches remaining. Two from the referee pool needed on each match (CR and 4th). Assuming no repeats, this means at least one of the 17 will not appear on the pitch. (Although I suppose they may be planning to use a reserve referee in addition to the 4th for the Final. ) I didn't see which ARs were retained, except for those on the matches already assigned, but if their crew referee does not get a center, they may not be used except as the reserve AR, like Rockwell has been. So some people will be used in the VAR booth in addition to than the 10 VARs retained. PH
Agree. Put another way, with 10 VAR-only folks kept, and 4 VAR per game, pretty much a certainty that others will be used in the VAR booth, too.
I have to know who the other two refs are. “Yeah, I had two World Cup refs running my line back in the day........”
So PRO says Marrufo's professional debut was 5/10/2000 on Colorado vs New England. That game doesn't exist. I've got him starting in 2002.
I saw him last week. He looks younger now than he did then. I thought it was him, but that age thing threw me off.
Yep, from 2000. Vicente Arrellano is the other, per this article https://www.referee.com/fifa-referee-mark-geiger/
Just two FIFA's and a dude who reffed the D1 Men's National Championship a couple years ago. No big deal. Mark Kadlecik looks way younger and in better shape now than he did back then!
