Call me crazy, but as MLS grows, I can see MLS wanting to make room for more US teams. Through dodgy dealing they might force TFC, VWC and Impact to CPL.
Okay. You're crazy. The owners control MLS not the other way around. That means 'MLS' can't force TFC to do anything. (See Precourt, Anthony). Besides, why would you get rid of a top 3 club in your league so you can lose a lawsuit then watch them go bankrupt in the CPL? Is the NBA trying to ditch the Raptors so the Sonics can come back to Seattle? Or MLB trying to force the Blue Jays out to make room for Portland or Nashville?
MLS is a business so I doubt this happens due to their league structure. The only way for them to quit the league would have to be the teams themselves wanting to switch or the sanctioning bodies no longer supporting cross-border competition forcing them out of MLS.
None of them have turned a profit since joining MLS either. In fact Joey Saputo said it the clearest. He was asked if that took into account all the other sources of revenues such as SUM, TV etc. The answer was that taking ALL the sources of revenues into the equation, Montreal is still losing on average between $12M to $15M. We are at least a decade from such a scenario to happen.
There's a theory that because each franchise in MLS operates on a license, the other owners could vote in favour of the league buying back those licenses in order to resell them for profit. Because each sale is a business transaction between each owner and the league, it would be an amicable separation. The league wouldn't be able to do it through "dodgy dealing" as thekorean suggested. I agree it's crazy but for different reasons, the most important of which is that I don't think the league could turn a profit by flipping Vancouver's or TFC's license. They could possibly turn a profit on Montreal but I think it's unlikely that Saputo would sell.
TFC paid $10M for theirs while Montreal and Vancouver paid $35M each for theirs. The value at which they could sell them back would be several times that amount, no?
First loan between MLS and CPL on the way? Heard it suggested that we are close to the first #MLS to #CanPL loan agreement. If you think about it you can probably figure out who it is. Regardless, there is a willingness to work together, which is a good thing.— Duane Rollins (@24thminute) January 11, 2019
The most probable would be Shaffelburg to Halifax. I doubt TFC gives him minutes while he has a huge potential and great talent. He helped the Atlantic Select defeat Fortuna Dusseldorf youth team this summer. Rumors are that CPL will aim to restrict the amount of loans teams can take from MLS
I don't think they would consider it along those terms. It's more of what the asset is worth at the time of sale, what it could potentially be worth in ten years and how that measures up against what they're offered.
Shaffelburg signed for TFC 2, which will play in USL league one, a drop from the USL championship, focusing on development. Why would they loan him to Halifax?
CPL would provide a more competitive environment at a higher level. Good way to see what he's made off and maybe speed up his development
They aren't going to run out of room for US teams because there isn't a cap on the number of teams in the league. If they want to add more teams, they will. I suspect MLS will eventually end up with 30 odd teams.
Why would they specifically restrict loans from MLS? As long as the players fit the roster rules (Canadian content, etc.) and the loan arrangement makes sense for the team in question, why would the CPL particularly care?
The league wants to develop its own players and own stars, no develop MLS players for them. They will take loans that makes sense for them but it was made crystal clear that the league will not be a developmental league for MLS.
That was kind of my point. Why make special rules about loans specifically for MLS? I get not wanting to look like a lower level league or whatever you want to call it but making a special rule for one league actually reinforces that image. Better just to let things ride, I think.
The Canadian MLS teams views the league has their developmental backyard. They view CPL has a "feeder league" for their teams. The league is just being proactive at protecting its interests and make it clear that it won't be that.

My guess is that regular loans from MLS wouldn't be an issue, but CPL is establishing the understanding that affiliations are unacceptable practice. Clubs in every league at all levels take loans, but when you only loan from one club it looks like a farm system.

Important news regarding the roster https://nationalpost.com/pmn/sports...-offers-a-look-at-new-league-ahead-of-kickoff Come game day, teams will have to start at least six Canadians. That is the only proviso, allowing coaches to make their normal substitutions without concern over citizenship. So 6 Canadians MUST start but there's no obligation to maintain a minimum of 6 Canadians at all time on the pitch.
